what's new about this law???
Landlord’s right to demand eviction gets council nod
By Nour Abuzant
The Advisory Council yesterday approved a proposal allowing landlords the right to demand the eviction of tenants “in case they needed the premises for themselves or for their kin.”
The proposal will be discussed now by the Cabinet.
Earlier, the council’s legal and legislative committee convened three times to discuss the proposal and the Minister of state for cabinet affairs, HE Sheikh Nasser bin Mohamed bin Abdulaziz al-Thani attended one of the meetings. Sources said the minister “supported” the draft saying the rent law of 2008 did not tackle the issue because there was an acute shortage of premises at that time.
The minister was quoted as saying that now the situation was totally different and more real estate projects were available.
The Advisory Council rejected a proposal to reconsider the annual fee paid by the landlords for the registration of rental contracts.
Advisory council member Rashid Medadi, who presented the proposal, told reporters: “Laws should be changed if they did not fit the reality.”
On the rights of tenants in this case, he said: “Tenants would be given reasonable time to find a new premises, as in the cases of demolition and maintenance. If the tenant has paid the rent in advance, he should be reimbursed.”

My rent contract says that I need the landlord's permission to renew it when it expires.
It's not indefinite. Even if I want to renew it, I need their permission. I think there is even a clause in there that says they (Al Ashmakh) can renegotiate the rent at any price - ie they can put the rent up by any amount they choose.
It's really idiotic when any rent contract is infinite in length, and only the tenant can leave whenever they wish.
Isn't it normal to rent for X years, with possible conditions, and then when the contract EXPIRES they can agree or disagree??? Any other contract is like that.
Are leases permanent?
Who cares if it's legal or illegal.
Since when did the law apply to Qatari landlords?
This law increases the insecurity factor for expatriates further. I especially like that: "If the tenant has paid the rent in advance, he should be reimbursed.”
I would prefer to read "must be reimbursed together with the interest accumulated."
"inshallah"? LOL!

Nicaq25: I mean reality check on them who do the laws. They have been blind for a very long time and this law will at least give protection to the tenants. One question tho' Did it mentioned on how long is the reasonable time? Eventhough there are a lot of vacant accommodation due to Barwa, the price of rent still hasn't come down yet. Hopefully, reimbursement will also be followed.
real people, complaining to their office of some abusive landlords! What could be more real than that?

Now it is legal to kick the tenants out, for whatever the reason is, by the landlord. Before it was illegal. Ha! Ha! Ha! And one more thing ...
Advisory council member Rashid Medadi, who presented the proposal, told reporters: “Laws should be changed if they did not fit the reality.”
Reality check please ...
it's theirs to rent out; it's theirs to take back for whatever reason they have.
good thing is that they noted that there will be reasonable notice period, and reimbursement of advanced rent, where applicable.
“in case they needed the premises for themselves or for their kin.”- do they really? or just an alibi so that they can kick the tenants out?
