The spending on foods are high during the month of Ramadan due to higher amount of charities and super market vouchers been distributed to lower and lower middle income group families working in Qatar.

Ramadan does not mean a 'Hunger Strike',

Muslims do eat quality food and fruits (high priced) and avoid junk, fatty, fried and oily unhealthy food (low quality, cheap).

They spent not only on self but distribute Iftar to their neightbors, relative and friends.

Check any Iftar tent, may answer more appropriately to your query.

Spending on food alone has gone UP 3 fold since the start of Ramadan. How come,if they are fasting, that 3 times as much food is eaten? Can someone explain,as I would have expected the spending to have gone down significantly at this time?

1. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.

2. The beginning of Ramadan is based upon observing the first crescent of the new moon.

3. Muslims all over the world spend 30 days observing fast, bettering themselves in the principles of their faith and performing charitable acts.

4. Children below twelve years and those who travel for long distances are exempt from fasting.

5. Many Muslims use Ramadan to make resolutions, similar to New Year's resolutions.

6. Muslims don’t just abstain themselves from food, they also strive to cut out bad habits like anger, envy, greed, malice, gossip etc!

7. Followers try to read the entire Qu’ran during the month.

8. Delicious and nutritious Ramadan dishes include: fig and lemon chicken, lentil soup, Moroccan soup, beef meatballs, fresh fig cake and rich semolina cookies.

9. Ramadan is followed by Eid-Ul-Fitr, a time of enjoyment with gifts for the kids and wishing all near and dear ones “Eid Mubarak”

The month of Ramadan is when the first verses of the Quran were revealed. Note: The entire Quran was revealed over a period of about 23 years, starting in 610 CE and ending in 632 CE.

The Muslim world has an almost staggering diversity of cultures and each Muslim country may have its own customs and rites associated with Ramadan. Some customs that are observed by most Muslims include the following:

Recitation of the entire Quran, in imitation of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) who did so. This is usually done for the community from the mosques or (in Muslim countries) on the radio; individuals or families may also get together for their own recitation

Observance of special night vigil prayers in the late evening or middle of the night called tarawih

Withdrawing to the mosque during the last ten nights of Ramadan for prayer and Quran recitation, which is called itikaf meaning "seclusion"

Celebration of the "Night of Power" marking the specific date of the beginning of the revelation of the Quran on the 27th of Ramadan.

As well, the fast is broken each evening with a meal called "iftar" (meaning "breaking the fast"), and the last meal in the morning before dawn is called "suhur" (meaning "morning meal").

In Muslim countries it is quite common to have feasts that last all night and run from iftar to suhur. These feasts are a time of celebration and community. There is also a special holiday marking the end of Ramadan, called Eid al-Fitr.
