What do you miss most?

Gypsy
By Gypsy

I'm feeling very nostalgic today. I had a conversation yesterday at work with some collegues and we started talking about things we missed from our home country. Later I talked to a Qatari friend of mine who is in Australia and he started talking about the things he missed from here.

No matter where we go or how happy we are in our adopted lands there will always be things we miss from our homes. SO I was just wondering, in the spirit of nostalgia, what do you miss most about your homes, and for any Qataris that want to join in in our cry fest, what do you miss most when you leave here?

I'll start:

I miss snow!

I miss walking down the street at night with the snow lightly falling down, and you can see it catching the light from the street lamps, and you can smell the wood smoke from peoples fire places.

I miss going outside after a huge blizzard and the whole world just seems muffled under this huge blanket of snow and it's just perfectly silent and still outside.

I love going skiing after a big snow and being the first person to break a path through the fresh powder.

I miss sitting inside around a fire, after a hard day of skiing and having a drink with friends. You're exhausted and smelly, but you've had a great day outside in the cold.

Ok, everyone else's turn now.

"home" to me is where u find urself.. where ur comfortable.. where ur happy... and i never felt that here...

so i dont miss shiiiit when im gone.. i actually start doing the happy dance as soon as the plane takes off.. im out of hell.. yaaaaay... and then the tears start to roll when the plane takes off and im heading back (sniff sniff)

the UK felt like home when i lived there.. so here is wat i miss...

* i miss being able to walk places

* i miss walking down to the park .. sitting on the fresh grass.. aaagghh the smell of the grass that stains ur a$$... reading my trashy magazines.. and watchin the rugby hunks playing...

* i miss walkin down to the corner shop in my pjs

* i miss having all my friends living around the corner from me

* i miss living alone

* i miss random old people smiling at u for no reason

* i miss staring at the rain from my window on a gloomy dark day and ordering in greasy chinese food and the delivery man standing all wet outside my door

* i miss pizza night and pay-per-view movies

* i miss being able to wear wtvr i want

* i miss jogging around my neighbourhood then picking fights with little kids in the playground over whos gna go on the swings

* miss the police men on horses

i miss feeling alive

What do I miss?;

I miss date scones from Bakers Delight and Mango Magic Shake from Boost Juice.

I miss Myers, Target & K-Mart where you can always find what you want and a size that fits.

I miss walking out the front door and being able to walk, run or ride my bike.

I miss 'common sense' being the norm instead of a rarity.

I miss business with 'customer service'.

I miss wearing singlets without having to feel like a criminal.

I even miss the sound of the lawn mower on a saturday morning, then walking out side and smelling the fresh cut grass.

I miss having a bottle shop on every corner, instead of having to drive out salwa road, and turning down back streets to go to the distribution centre as if I am going for a drug deal.

I miss property rental companies that clean a house before they show it to potential tennants.

I miss business that will call you back if they are busy, instead of asking you to call back.

I miss having being part of a crowd when I go to a sporting event.

I miss Australia.

How true it now seems that simple things in life are often the best.

Well i miss a million things,

if i wanna state them here, i think i will need like 100 hours

but the most important thing i miss is my fiancee :(

imagine being engaged for 3 days and then leave your fiancee and come live here in qatar!!

it is so hard

if no one has tried it before, believe me... it is like living hell

i also miss my country alot,

the busy and lively streets,

the nice weather!

the gorgeous beach

the wonderful mountains (well here you can see mountains, but sadly they are mountains of sand!!!)

the nice and not burning sun

the cool breeze in the first hours of the morning

to summarize all, i miss my country, friends, and last but not least: my fiancee

I missed the land I was born and lived in

Family, friends, Sister and kids, having fun, breathing, dancing

having joyfull moments, happiness, love, Laughing, smiling, walking, but maybe u get used to this prison after a while,

I want you all now to read this below story, it's about all of us:

Once there was a hungry, starving rat in the basement of an old house, looking and searching for food to eat, suddenly he found a big barrel of olive oil full to the top, so he dipped his tail in the oil and licked it, ......ohhh!! the oil was fresh and so tasty said the rat, so he dipped his tail another time in that fresh oil and licked it again, he repeated time after time but then he wanted more oil. That wasn't sufficient for him to fulfill his hunger so he dipped his tail deeper but the poor rat slipped and plunged into this barrel, he was very afraid at the beginning when he first fell but then he enjoyed the fall, he realised that this is what he dreamt of all of his life to swim, in a barell full of olive oil and eats from it day and night, so he swam in this barrel and stayed in eating day after day untill the limit of oil went down and low, the poor rat tried to climb many times to escape from this barrel who emprisonned him but couldn't, tried more and more but he couldn't do anything then he started to convince himself about not going out anymore he said: why i want to go i'm living in a castle and i have food for many years, so he stayed in this barrel all his life eating and sleeping and swimming and enjoying his moments, in this big prison without any complaint since he had everything available for him in this prison.

So my advice to you all is to enjoy the prison you are living in no matter what nationality you have, Qatari, Lebanese, jordanian, French, American, British, Hindous, Philippino... or even what religion you follow and benefit from every moment, everyone should do his own effort to feel home because i know that nobody feels happy but in his home town of origin. live each day as if it was your last and be happy thats the most important thing. and think of the day that will come where you'll be home with your friends, relatives and family.

Live each day abroad.... and live it as an adventure.

I miss the the sparkling decorations and lights and christmas time on those sections of road where no cars are allowed to pass.

I miss sitting on the front porch with my double espresso and watching the horses graze.

I miss sitting at the dinner table with all the relatives and having good italian food being shovelled into my plate by grandma, all amidst very agitated debates which sound like shouting matches if it weren't for the load laughter coming from the room.

I miss the summer light which starts to fade at 10pm.

I miss like most of you said the land.

All of my family is here so I don't miss them.

Most of my friends there [true friends] are dead, so I don't miss them either.

I don't miss the people there, I'm missing the place itself.

The feel of being free to do whatever you want, the feel that I'm in my country and that we are somehow equal.

The feel that the cold morning air can give me when I wake up early every morning.

The feel of being happy while I'm not safe at all.

The feel that I got when I was going to the university, greeting any old granny that I find in my way and she replied back with something nice that only can come from them, wishing you a nice day and to let god be with you.

I'm missing a lot of things, but if I told you everything here what would reamin for me to keep on missing?

With missing the wine I mean everything taht goes with it.

I also miss the wine festivals. Season is starting slowly in Germany now and I miss the get together, sit down somewhere in a park and have a bottle of wine, shared among good freinds while having a chat and enjoying the warming spring sun!

Ham shankee soup,

Bacon rolls on a Saturday morning,

My Garden,

Aberdeen rowies,

Going to watch the Glorious Reds of Pittodrie on a Saturday afternoon,

Summer evenings when it doesn't get dark until 10PM,

etc etc.

I kind of miss the snow. Well the first night of snow. I hate the slushy, muddy snow when it thaws though.

Hi Gypsy, what a great topic... I could go on for hours...when I'm here I miss some things overseas but when I'm away I miss some things here...let me see...

when I'm away from Qatar I miss...

my family!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my beautiful garden where I spend a lot of my time swimming, playing sports, growing fruits and vegetables, reading, etc...

the smell of bukhour wafting through the house and waking me up every morning...

wearing my abayas (although I do wear them sometimes abroad it's just not practical when you're hurtling down a black run!!!)...

my animals on the farm, especially my horse...

the somehow less stressed approach to life here in Qatar compared to say Paris , London or New York.

...to name a few...more later if I have time...

Hmmm, I wonder what I miss the most:) Now THAT would make Doha an easier place to live in!

Maybe I'll have to setup my own garden. Where's the light souk!

Well QL has nothing to do with how I feel with my Life. Just sharing my emotional situation at the very moment.

Hey Gypsy...wow...good job...

Unlike you, I really don't miss snow. I suffered through too much -50 to every really miss that but I do miss the cool nights in summer...that fresh, crisp smell in the morning that leads into another beautiful day.

I miss forests, trees, grass...when everywhere you look, you see living nature not the monochrome tan colour of sand and rocks.

Most of all...I miss Tim Horton's coffee...*sniff*

That ozone smell in the air after summer storm;

Snow in those big beautiful flakes;

Going for a walk, looking at trees and green grass, flowers;

Being able just to open the door and WALK without every car slowing down near me or giving horn and looking at me as if I am a (...)

I miss food from my home, everything from good bread to pork meat :)

Good fresh veggies and strawberries with taste.

Living in a place where you actually know your neighbours.

And, of course, I miss my family.

Most of all I MISS MY DAD!!! (may his good soul rest in peace)
