we've arriveed

Well, after months of preparation and anticipation we are finally here. After a week we've got over the shell shock and we LOVE IT!! Really, this place is so easy to live in I don't know what people have such a problem about. OK, it's hot, but we've come from outback Australia so have been somewhat acclimatised. Everyone we have met out and about have been polite and pleasant, our accommodation is fantastic, the school are doing everything in their power to help with the bureaucracy. I'm never leaving!!! We picked up a car yesterday but haven't driven around much - that will, admittedly, take a bit of getting used to but I'm sure we're up for the challenge.

There is a fair bit of 'hurry up and wait' but that's the same in any country - I'm English originally so I'm used to endless bureaucracy.

And the shopping - wow. It's a national pastime, really, isn't it?

So hi everyone - maybe I'll get to meet some of you now.

Good morning and welcome to the weekend ... off to experience our first Sheraton Brunch.

Happily I go with senti's sentiments when it comes to water. Give me a bevy instead any time ;o)

I guess they have to claw back some money the lose by giving the bubbly away :D

Seriously, though, in UK bottled water in restaurants is always a ridiculous price - I always ask for tap water (unfortunately can't do that here - too yuk).

However, bottled water in Doha is so cheap it's a bit of a rip off to overcharge for it in restaurants. Be thankful you weren't paying for the vino! lol

Even i am intrigued as to why its charged so high in a restaurant

for your welcoming comments. Now back from Brunch and it was great - but hey, that water is expensive!!! Weird that they have endless free champagne but whack on an huge charge for bottled water. Quite funny really. Beautiful view.

I'm a pretty positive person generally - and why go to another country and not give it your best shot. If you want to spend your life complaining you can do that at home! But as I say, so far all good. We drove around a little this morning - we took someone's advice to get used to driving around and get our bearings on a Friday morning when it's quiet, and that was good advice.

I feel very privileged that I'm a white female foreign worker, however, and not an Asian construction worker as I'm sure those poor buggers don't get treated any where near as well as I am and I really do appreciate it - to the point of feeling rather guilty about it. You see those poor guys working outside in this heat, that's pretty tough. And we would not have our nice air conditioned apartments to live in without them.

welcome to Doha - hope to meet you both sometime at one of the social gatherings :D

and I love it too. Had a lousy cold and wet summer in Norway and enjoying the heat. Haven't been around much yet but lookin forward to that. And everything I'am wondering about is possible to find in old posts here. Brilliant!

Just to add to the previous comments, in my opinion, Sheraton's Brunch on Fridays at Shaheen's at the top, is one of the best for the quality/price ratio. I've been to all brunches once, but i've returned to the Sheraton 4 or 5 times in a year and a half. The view is fantastic if you ask to sit by the Four Seasons' side. Unlimited bubbly also helps.

Landmark has a lot of stuff for Brits, like the food mart has lot of British imports and so on, and there's of course Marks and Spencers (if that's the kinda place you go to...).

Enjoy your stay.

Mez, I know you'll get used to Doha, Qatar and Trust me Doha, is not bad as what you obviously read about those complains and it's a matter of you try to see and appreciate the things that you have here and that Qatar has to offer :D

Besides, no country doesn't have a flaws ;-)Doha is getting better and better, you are lucky you just came at this stage of their development and continuous development.

May you have a nice weekend too.

Cheers!

Yes, City Center (great), Villagio (cute but won't be doing weekly shopping there), Hyatt Plaza (must be missing something as not much there). Not been to Landmark yet. Been to Sealine (not too impressed) and up to Al Khor. We're going to be driving quite slowly first off anyway until we get used to the roads so radars not too much of a worry. I'm sure that it won't be long before I'm driving like a local. We've been living in a small town with not one traffic light so traffic is a novelty - and not a pleasant one. However, I'm a Londonder originally so used to sitting in traffic for ever trying to go a couple of kilometres.

One question: does anyone think that Doha will ever be finished? Talk about building projects! The place is one big building site!
