I am desperately trying to lose 30 kgs.

I find it very difficult to do it alone.

I feel that  if a group of QLers who also want to lose weight or get fit can get together and share their problems, achievements and frustrations together, maybe we can encourage one another and help one another in this difficult journey.

Please get in touch if you are interested in getting fit and losing weight and have been trying hard to do it alone .

try to set small achievable goals first, too huge a goal will leave you in despair and not motivated.slowly but surely you will get there provided you keep up with the excercise and healthy eating habits (a change of l ifestyle too will help tremendously)once you see little improvements you will be even more motivated. give yrself lil treats when you see improvement. so gl and hope that you do achieve yr goal .

life's too short so make the most of it, you only live but once.......

I woke up at 4 am today, but could not walk the treadmill.

Don't laugh, my youngest  went off with the magnetic thread , that establishes contact with the machine and so the machine would not move.

Then I tried to go out and walk but there was  a dust storm or something going on.

 I came right back in.

So I didn't work out today .

And cannot use the treadmill till I find the missing magnet.

Boo hoo hoo

I am willing to lead a gentle run on the corniche. I have been hauling my immense and bloated belly on runs three times a week. The runs are exactly 5km and I take it pretty slowly.

A warning though to anyone who is interested. As I lumber along the corniche the sight is so shocking that it is common to see women fainting and weeping and children crying. Even grown men are seen to recoil in revulsion at the sight of me wobbling along.

This is not for the faint of heart.

I put on 15 Kilos since I came here and most of it over the last six months. I have to admit I got really lazy because I finish at 3 pm and don't do much after cooking dinner - I keep getting a guilty conscience for not doing more and it is a permanent fight with myself

 jinkzy,

I think maybe like you said you need only firming up and some emotional support to keep off cigarettes.

Imust congratulate you on kicking this dangerous habit goodbye.

i am sure you look good , don't think you dont look good.

Try and put in some exercise each day

I dunno, I just feel heavy now. There are things I find hard to do already. Maybe it's not the losing weight that is my goal more on firming and toning. Oh, and trust me I don't look good, things aren't proportioned to each other when I gain more pounds. “They say you can't live without love. Tell them oxygen is more important!.” - G. House

 jinkz ,

You are only 52.9- 53 kgs and you want to lose weight ?

Why ?

Good food is a temptation in Doha , I agree.

I have to mentally restrain myself when I go to the supermarkets here .

 Dear all ,

Can we have fitness team , with a leader from QL who can instruct us and also lead us when we run /walk ?

Or different people to take the lead each week , different locations to exercise etc and make it systematic.

Who can be a good team leader ?

In january i was 49kgs now my weight plays around 52.9~53.9! I just feel so heavy... I want to be skinny again  “They say you can't live without love. Tell them oxygen is more important!.” - G.   On monday I ran 2 miles with some friends in corniche and I try not to exceed 1200 cals a day....I have a feeling though that I might still be eating wrong. The running thing might become a regular thing maybe 3x a week. I think we should start a fitness group to be lead by someone experienced in that area. “They say you can't live without love. Would you please eliminate Aunt from your name. I find it funny considering my age to call you Aunt

I would suggest you start a special group for diets and weight control. Let everyone state their experience there and like that everybody would benefit from others experiences.

Did try once to follow a simple yet effective method. It did work and help a lot. Simply it is based on doing stomach exercise prior to having lunch.

Breakfast

one piece of brown bread and reduced cheese  10 gm with margarine as much coffee and tea as I wanted no sugar and no milk.

Lunch

packed plate with potatoes, broccoli cabbage, etc. not fried only steamed of course. With a light desert also steamed fruit. (I am allergic to fresh fruit and vegetables - I even have to peel potatoes with gloves on)

Dinner

No dinner really, just brown bread and a selection of low calorie cold cuts - two thin slices. Tea only evenings.

Actually I went on a 1200 calorie diet per day and ate mostly vegetables,  I lost a great deal of weight over a period of six weeks.

Now whether you believe it or not this was quite a lot of food even if you don't think so and my blood improved a great deal over the weeks.

Also in between I went twice for a Chinese meal in the evening. So it does work

 richard 123,

In Qatar it is difficult for any one to remain slim except French women I think , who it seems remain slim always.

this is because of all the tempting foods that are available in the supermarkets, chocolates , icecreams and all the fast food joints all over the place.

Also the climate is anti exercise .

Either it is too hot or too cold.

In addition, there is no place to walk , no sidewalks or foot paths or safe places .

I believe some people use the City center to walk , which in the beginning sounded odd to me , but now seems ok .(Necessity is the mother of invention , right ?)

You should ideally lose only 2 pounds a week , that is a little less than 1 kg.

To lose 1 kg , you need to exercise 3500 calories - even if you manage to burn 500 cals a day, that is 1 kg per week.

I think for the first week , it is difficult to drop even a kg , but do not get discouraged ,continue on.

I am with you in this battle against the bulge.

Just think I have 3 times as much weight as you to lose.

I need to lose about 10kg. I have started a diet and exercise routine but need the support and company of others  to get the best out of it. I have been on my diet for 10 days now and am running three times a week. So far, I have hardly lost anything but these things take time.

Only if I am bored do I think about food - I get home at about three thirty so I cook for myself then and finish the process. Generally after that I am not very hungry. I very seldon buy potatoe chips and the likes because these are very bad habits and they never get put down until they are finished.

I rode a bike on the road in the UAE but always picked roads that had little or no traffice and enjoyed the excercise.

I don't know if a bicycle has to be registered here I think only motor bikes.

Many of the new roads have an island in the middle on which you can ride a bike easily I saw one lady doing it recently and as my job is only 5 kilometers from my home I can justify the bike and the time (half an hour).

In Munich I was riding about twenty two kilometres on the weekend.

 Canary  bird ,

I heard once on Oprah that one must stop eating two hours before one's bedtime and I tried practising that -believe me it worked.

Before that I used to eat till my bed time, and then sleep for sometime and if I got up at night , would continue hogging again.

SO not eating in the evenings is a good habit , but tell me how do you control those hunger pangs ?

Did you use an exercise bike or a road bike in the UAE ?

I enjoy cycling but as the roads here have no sidewalks one cannot cycle freely here.

Plus I heard that one needs a license to ride a bike here , is it true ?

Hopefully I will get a bike again soon and continue with it, I used to ride bike in the UAE.

tonilouis,

Of course one has to exercise and eat only what is needed.

So what exercise activity do you enjoy or what do you feel you can do , without getting tired ?

Find out what your required body weight is .

Then make a goal of how to lose the weight .

Keep a food diary, believe me , this works .

If you write down every detail of every morsel you put down your throat, then after some time , you know which are the trouble foods for you and what are the times of the day you feel like eating those foods  and how to avoid eating those foods etc..,

QL has all this already and we are not waiting PH to initiate this, these ladies are all living in Qatar and are most helpful even some of the men are cooking and health expert and are always available to support and help.

There are groups walking on the Corniche you just have to join and there are groups sharing recipes and good food you just have to check th threads.

Discipline is the answer to overweight if you are not suffering from a health condition, and many QL members will help you with that.

Good idea to make a Weight Watchers programme on QL go ahead and start it if you have time - I will surely join as your first member.

 i think I didn't make myself clear.

What I meant was that all of the ones who need to lose weight or get fit are trying to do it , maybe half heartedly or full heartedly.

Some days are good and some days are frustrating -like we have exercised adequately, controlled our diet etc but yet find that the scales do not show any loss.

On days like those, or even when we achieve something , if we could share it with a group of like minded people , it makes us easier to achieve one's goal.

In QL we are like a family , and many of us are far from home , unable to share our problems etc..

So we could use the QL forum to encourage one another, I think we can atleast have the satisfaction of having done something good for some one .

Of course we need to do our bit , like exercise for 45 minutes or control our cravings or whatever the goals are that we have set for ourselves. I dinn't mean just talk about it and do nothing about it.

Sorry for not making myself clear in the beginning .

its so easy for a person to judge others..

I feel you in your goal and would like to join you Aunt Polly. We should have an online support group for weightloss.

And get together and go for walks and make healthy recipes..

Because it is difficult to change ones lifestyle without friends and support!

The idea is nice, but then pls pardon me for the question...LOL

Just a question, how are you supposed to looose weight or get fit if you dont DO anything and just TALK about it...'cos the last time I heard or I ever knew was that a lot had to be DONE in terms of loosing weight...
