Is wearing skirt allowed in Doha?

Rabbit
By Rabbit

I have been getting some stares lately and I have come to realize that its because of my dresses...I wear formals with trousers to office but I tend to wear skirts at home or while shopping...Is it right or ok to wear them or it's prohibited?

Ignore the comments from some of these folks, ie the ones telling you to cover up head to toe, if you are an expat. Dress comfortably...I wear skirts also, which hit about my knee or a bit above, and its fine...yes you get stares, but like gypsy said..you get stares if covered up like a snowbunny. Heck, we get hit on when we are TOTALLY covered..part of the territory...don't throw away the skirts..go for it!!

Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.

There was a news report a few months ago which said that guidelines were going to be issued for what you should wear when out in public in Qatar, and that this was going to be policed. Nothing seems to come of it though.

I'd say wear what you feel comfortable in and respect the traditions of this Muslim country (so no "kylie" hot-pants or micro skirts!). As

syamsat says; men will always stare, it's the nature of the beast, but some are less subtle than others because it's a novelty to them since they come from a more reserved country.

I was brought up in Doha, was there from 1982 to 1997. I was a small kid then but I remember lots of my friends/friend's mom's used to wear skirts even then. I dont think there is any problem with wearing skirts in Doha. I'm sure ur not talking about mini skirts, but anything below the kneee is perfectly OK.

Meh, you could wear a snow suit and they'd still stare. I'm not a pretty girl and I wear clothes that look like they came from the second hand souk and they still stare at me. :P

(no seriously, wear whatever your comfortable with, they will stare no matter what ;)

Wear comfortable clothes and ones you feel good in, people will always stare, it doesn't mean anything as long as you don't stare back where a person might think that they are getting the come on. Men are just men and will stare anyway until their eyeballs fall out lol.

There have been various discussion on QL about what to wear and what not to wear, in the end you are the person wearing the clothes, and you should take into consideration that this country has traditions and a culture very different to the West, however it is your choice what you wear. In any case I would take a look at I love Qatar I do believe there is something mentioned there on how ans what to wear .

Good luck.

Depends on the place where you live and work. My wife wears skirts and she can carry the dress well and can handle the stares as well. Don’t be conscious of stares..Just get going. That stares are not meant for violating any local customs, but out of general male instinct.( Even when I go out with my wife, I can't escape from some head turners ;-)

The reason I have put the question here is to find out for myself instead of relying on what people tell me about the customs and traditions here...Si if you cannot give answers to the questions;you should not post unnecessarily.
