volunteering/meeting people?

Hi All,

I'm free for the next 6 months, on break from university in the US and I'm looking for something to do here in Doha besides tour. Are there any organizations I can volunteer with or anything similar here? I know it's not socially acceptable for girls here to get jobs but I have nothing to do during the week when my family is at school/work. any suggestions would be much appreciated, especially ideas that would help me make friends here ;)

thanks in advance!

ps. I know this is incredibly off-topic, but anyone know a good nail salon around here?

okay so I've only been here for a week or so, and the thing about girls working is not a LAW, just something that I have deduced from my own experiences here. Clearly, that observation was inaccurate.

ps, I fixed my profile! haha :)

Sorry, hehe. that's just what I've noticed and heard. Girls aren't allowed to work at places like Starbucks for example, whereas in the US this is normal.

Why exactly are YOU in this thread?

You contributed nothing except being part of the anti-'Isabella' (sic) cheer-leading squad.

If you have a dislike of the woman then fine, but following her around QL is tantamount to creepy, stalker behaviour.

Say what you will about her, but in this thread Isobel was here to help; it was only the ignition of fury that made her comment otherwise.

She has a right to reply when anyone baits her, without being branded a racist.

Just because she doesn't say something and then put a wink ;-) on the end, to make it seem 'acceptable', doesn't mean she is any more, or less, racist than most of the 'insiders' here.

You haven't helped the OP one bit however, Bond.

So what the hell are YOU in this thread for? An English lesson?

Why thank you @ Bentley - at least someone remembers what this post was originally about ;).

I think I've found a few opportunities that I'm interested in pursuing here, but if anyone else has ideas feel free to send them my way. Thank you to everyone who made helpful suggestions! :)

Well, first of all I would like to welcome you in Qatar, such a lovely country, especially at this time of the year. I believe you do have some wrong impression about somethings here. As I have been living here for sometime, I believe it is a very open country, girls really have rights and freedom.

I saw one volunteer office near my work, will check it out and get you some info.

However, can you tell about your interests, we may thing of something interesting for you.

M.E methinks....soon enough you will find a lot of these 'children with special needs' having a torrid disposition and manners that go with it....using the choicest expletives! I think it will be a easy guess who their teacher was.

Isobel, regardless to how Lana's attitude was, you still shouldn't say such words, especially that you are a teacher.

That's a shock.

I am looking for young enthusiastic girls to help out with children who have Special Needs. We offer training to all that join us with the hope you may think of teaching children with special needs as a career.

It is hard work, stressful and heart-breaking at times; however the rewards are fantastic. Our children are fantastic individuals who have so much hidden/untapped potential.

As for nail salons- can’t help you there as it years since I have had a manicure.

I hear pretty good things about the universities here, so northwestern wouldnt be a bad idea, though I doubt there is anyway that you would get the same recognition for studying at northwestern that you get in LA.

As far as the beauty, Qatar is like 3 shades of brown and thats it. The corniche is ok and the flowers are nice as long as they just planted them. The food is ok and can be pretty cheap and the misspelled signage is good for a quick chuckle but none of this comes close to comparing with California.

I drove from southern Washington to San Diego a few years ago and was blown away by how incredible the weather and the scenery was in California. It was just one beautiful valley after another. LA wasnt that great, ill admit that, but the beaches were exponentially better than anything Ive seen in Qatar.

There are some things that you can do and enjoy in Qatar, but then you get to day 14 and pretty much all the resources have been tapped out. Enjoy a month with your family tops and bail.

Oh and one term last 6 months at UCLA? that seems like it must eat away at at least a fraction of a second...

For a start why dont you volunteer to pamper your own family, neighbours etc a little bit? Cook for them. Baby sit, etc..Or just smile and chat and make the winter months more bearable..for those who are feeling lonely and bleak?

There definitely arent nearly as many women as men working, or living for that matter in Qatar; however you could probably find something to do.

As far as marketing is concerned, I havent seen anything marketed here aside from the World Cup bid and the Asian Cup, so there is definitely a deficiency in the way businesses are trying to attract customers. I dont know if you want to be the trailblazer to try and change this, but maybe you could sell someone on it.

QAWS is always welcoming volunteers and walking the dogs is a fun way to get some exercise. Also, the people that run the place are really nice.

What I'm really curious to know is what university town was so lame that you decided to take your time off and waste it in Qatar?

Sorry, but there are girls working at Starbucks - where did you get the idea they don't? Besides which, your profile states that you are male?

As for volunteering - maybe at one of the international schools or charities (Red Crescent) does MSF have an office here (Medicins Sans Frontiers)?

I love these statements coming from nowhere "I know it's not socially acceptable for girls here to get jobs"

From where you've got this impression? Is it your first landing here?

Girls are working everywhere around Nationals and expats; just mind to give it a try.

If you're after a temporary job; event organising and marketing would be yor target.

The voluntary work is on hold for the moment since Speed is taking a nice long vacation. I suggest you take up some course on how to do your nails at home :P
