US Lesbian couple Sarah Walton, right, aged 48, and Courtney Mitchell, aged 41, pose after completing rituals during their marriage ceremony at Dakchinkali temple, some 22km from the capital of Kathmandu, in Nepal yesterday

Nepal hosted its first lesbian wedding yesterday, as two American citizens tied the knot at a Hindu temple in a public ceremony.
The pair, Sarah Welton, 48, a lawyer, and Courtney Mitchell, 41, a college professor, from Denver, Colorado, were married at the temple of Dakshinkali, on the outskirts of
Kathmandu.
“I like Nepal, so I chose this as the destination for our wedding,” said Mitchell, who worked for seven years in Nepal in the past, as a US Peace Corp Volunteer.
“And I have also heard that Hindu mythology has stories about same-sex marriage.”
The couple met five years ago. They plan to register their wedding in the state of Iowa, in the US, where same-sex marriage is legal.
The wedding took place in the Nepalese tradition, joined by a local gay rights group, the Blue Diamond Society. The society organised a wedding ceremony for a male homosexual couple last year.
Although laws are being drafted in Nepal to guarantee the rights of the homosexuals, same sex marriage is still not legal.
Nepal recently started recognising rights of the homosexuals and process is underway to enshrine the rights in the constitution. Last week, the Himalayan nation started its 11th national census, which for the first time, includes an option for people to register themselves as a “third gender.”

If one gay marriage can feed ten hungry Nepali children, to hell with opinions......of the Lords of religion who decide to turn a blind eye to the begging street urchin .If capitalism doesn't ashame these religions , why should gay marriages?

@naomsfin..thats doubtful..unless they want to actually tour nepal for its beauty(which it is:beautiful)..by your reasoning,couples- gay or otherwise should be making a beeline to las vegas to get married.we all know thats not why ppl go there exclusively...just bcos you can doesnt mean theres going to be a tsunami of gays going there..

All gays and lesbians will fly to Nepal to have their abnormal sexual desire/commitments fullfiled.which explains the boost in tourism

Well atleast now they (nepal) have something to shout about. The other so called democratic and free countries in the region like India are more like hypocrites where gay rights are concerned but behind closed doors they would go about doing anything and everything.

Nepal was the first country in South Asia to decriminalize homosexuality. The Supreme court has approved same sex marriages and now Nepal is trying to promote gay tourism.

Hinduism never advocated same sex marriage!! Why justify your own actions on a false pretext.

Congratulations to them.  Maybe this will help Nepal's declining tourist industry and save more them from slavery in other nations.
