US helicopters attack Syrian farm

Telegraph..

Intersting escallation.. What will Syria do ??? NOTHING!

The raid was confirmed by a US official in Washington, who said it targeted elements of a network supplying foreign fighters to Iraq from North Africa and the Middle East.

A government statement carried by the official Syrian Arab News Agency (Sana) condemned the raid and said the Foreign Ministry had summoned the charges d'affaires of the US and Iraq to protest against the strike.

The attack by US special forces occurred just before sunset in an area of farms and brick factories about five miles inside the Syrian border.

Four helicopters flying along the Euphrates River struck the Sukkariyeh Farm near the town of Abu Kamal, the Syrian government said. The helicopters attacked a civilian building under construction, firing on the workers inside and killing a number of civilians, including four children, the Syrian statement said.

The US official told the Associated Press that while there had been considerable success dealing with "rat lines" conveying militants into Iraq near the Euphrates River, the part of the network involving elements of the Syrian army had been out of reach.

"The one piece of the puzzle we have not been showing success on is the nexus in Syria," the official said. "We are taking matters into our own hands."

The White House in August approved similar special forces raids across the border of Pakistan to target al-Qaeda and Taliban operatives. At least one has been carried out but others were stopped by warning fire from Pakistani troops.

A resident of the nearby village of Hwijeh said some of the aircraft in the attack landed and disgorged troops who fired on a building. At least one of the dead was a construction worker, he said.

"Syria condemns this aggression and holds the American forces responsible for this aggression and all its consequences," the government statement said. "Syria also calls on the Iraqi government to shoulder its responsibilities and launch an immediate investigation into this serious violation and prevent the use of Iraqi territory for aggression against Syria."

The raid echoed Israeli air strikes last year which targeted a suspected Syrian nuclear facility.

Simple Fact: USA is the only Superpower and can do whatever it wishes. Other countries have to learn to stand up for themselves. The USA is no ones's friend. Rightly so, its first priority is what's best for the United States.

Smartbuddy: That makes me remember when U.S. attacked Iraq, according to Iraquis government, the U.S. whenever they attacked they would only hit schools or civilians places, when they entered in any city and went to check some "civilian" buildings found lots of ammunition, but Saddam's government always denied it.

I agree with Alexa, the West has a lot of problems to worry about without interfering on other countries affairs.

The best solution to peace in the Middle East is for a C130 cargo plane to fly low level over the populated areas in the Middle East. Then have someone open the rear door and distribute US Green Cards and one way tickets to the USA to all the "terrorists". Why do people slag the USA so readily then rush off and buy the latest American car, ipod, computer etc. If the Americans stopped buying the energy and made themselves self sufficient, where would we all be......... stop whinging.

thanks for correcting me on the taxes...

But I still think the US may face the risk of collapse if t continues these unnecessary wars

I sometimes wonder how US delegates make it to the elections? Bush, Algore, Mccain and Obama...I doubt that these people are the best among the American public...a typical American CEO would rule the country beatifuly...

Sadly Stallion it doesnt work that way, taxes are paid to the state, a very small amount is federal taxes. California has the highest state taxes in the US. Go Cali.

ok sorry it is 50 something states :)

But Brit if you think of it for a second...you represent California (a democrate) and you pay fortunes to some stupid republicans in Washington to waste...You will think about your own state and think of splitting from this federatin for your own good...

If california becomes indipendent it will be one of the wealthiest nations...this is just an example.

The USA is like any civilization...Roman, Persian, Japan...etc...

Nations rise and fall but the problem is when they committ the same mistake over and over..

Arrogance was why the USSR (Russia) collapsed...they went to Afghanistan to practice "supper power" and the result? shortly after it had fallen...

The USA entered into many unnecessary battles recently and I personally think it wont be long before the US becomes 55 independent countries

...it's a shame...

The main issue at hand is "who watches the watcher"..

I have no problem with the USA or UK going after extremists or "rogue elements" who may wish to harm others.

However, the problem is and will always be ensuring that they went after the correct targets and not innocents.

lol pope of course i am not going there and i left in 2007 when it was really very terrible but what i am saying is qualification of becoming a terrorist in somalia is when your family is displaced by ethiopian military and US bombs over head. that qualifies everyone from mogadishu lol

but thank God i am alive and doign well and support my family in outskirts of mogadishu. but if you really were in the position of many somalis who witnessed the relief of 2006 and distraction that followed you will feel angry sometimes.

Feel bless and fortunate that you have a job and your wife in Qatar. You are not starving or worry about getting shot by some 12 year old kid, who does not like you because you refuse to paid fares for the road some where in Somalia.

Accusations are just that, no country is completely innocent, including the US.

Governments say what people want to hear. People need justification as to why thousands of their young men were sent to die, why the war on terror is so important (forget the terror right on the UK's backdoor) or why it is ok to go and blow yourself up on a busy bus.

As I said before, opinions are like a**holes, everyones got one. Thats never gonna change but I think people need to be reasonable.

Hmmm... how do you know a politician in lieing? His mouth is moving.

Yes the world's biggest Terrorist, Respected Mr. Bush can do anything to "protect" "their" country by attacking any other country.

You said it right what anyone can do, Charge Bush with War Crimes, well if the world leaders could get up from their sleep/ignorance and say in one voice enough is enough, no more intrusion by US in any country Peace would prevail...and sooner or later it would happen.

By anonymous• 27 Oct 2008 09:10

they can do what they want to protect the country, and theres nothing any other country can do about it.

What yer gonna do...try and charge bush with war crimes, cos he dont give a crap.

Anyways, yer safe cos the yanks have a base in Qatar to protect you, so yer cant really complain.

of course, and soon we will mark the end of the empire... bcuz they have murdered hundreds of thousands of innocent people around the world in the name of war on terrorism,. MAN the american citizens arent superior then the others around 3000 innocent people died in September 11, how many did the US killed afterward? am talking about innocent people. i only know over 10,000 in Somalia. let alone Iraq, Afghanistan etc.

i am sure a reasonable human being wont justify the killing of the innocent people by US because of what happened 9/11.

besides, what they do is reported, what others do is kept hidden...

What they do is reported and no one objects to but if someone defends themselves against this oppression then they are termed as Terrorists. What wrong did people of Iraq do that they are suffering every day?

Sooner or later US would be on the other side, till the vast majority of world leaders are busy or turning a blind eye to activities/intrusions of US. The world would be a better place in Peace if USA minds its own business.
