UAE shopping centre plans new mall for labour
A UAE shopping centre plans to build a second mini-mall just for labourers after it banned them following complaints of anti-social behaviour from members of the public.
Labourers are not permitted to enter the Al Bawadi Mall in Al Ain on weekday evenings and weekends, according to a report in the National.
They have been accused of staring and taking photographs of women, falling asleep on benches, even driving a truck into the entrance of the mall.
Khalid Shraim, the mall’s marketing manager, told the newspaper: “This is not a total ban. Labourers are allowed to use the mall’s rear entrance closest to Carrefour during the day and early evening, but they cannot come to the mall on weekends.
“We are trying to maintain the quality of the mall and create a wholesome family shopping experience.”
He said the mall was considering building a smaller shopping centre that workers in nearby labour camps can use.
“We are human beings dealing with human beings and realise that labourers also have shopping needs,” Shraim said.
“We are considering building a mini-mall for them with stores that sell less expensive items that they can afford on the minimal salaries they earn.”
The Al Bawadi Mall opened in December last year.

MD,
As an Arab I would be their cousin :P
You used the J word, be prepared for the rampage.
bleu, as a Muslim you should help these poor people and not turn them away. That's Jewish behavior.
"provided their dress and behaviour were appropriate." : The same unwritten rule we have here.
Mall lets labourers back in – if they behave properly
AL AIN // Labourers were allowed back into the Bawadi Mall on Friday, after The National revealed last week that they had been banned.
The workers had been prevented from entering the mall on Fridays and in the evening.
However, a member of the mall’s security staff, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said management had issued a directive before the weekend. It told security that labourers were to be allowed in at all times, provided their dress and behaviour were appropriate.

lol what a bloody joke. Shame on them all when you are judged by god I hope he remembers your kindness to your fellow human beings.
Bleu,
I’m sorry to know that you would do that. It does not sound too Islamic or Christian to me.
Maybe it's just me.
lus, yes I am, and I don't segregate human beings into classes... It's just a matter of common business sense.
If I owned a shopping mall, I'd make sure people who won't/can't buy anything don't come in and bother the people who would.
Yes FS, because I don't think that anybody claiming to be Muslim, would segregate human beings into classes!
lusitano ..is that really important?
bleu,
are you Muslim?
lol.. every1 go to malls ..hangout and spend money... shopping or just hv a coffee..
peace bro
aami, I don't hang out at malls, I usually spend money there.
these are really not good what happens with LABOURER here
Qatar has to think something like this for labourers
bleu
whats the diff b/w me , u and the labor ...if i can go to malls without any reason just for hangout then y not they..? i dint mean labors r partners but they r one of us in humans .
"We are considering building a mini-mall for them with stores that sell less expensive items that they can afford on the minimal salaries they earn."
Cheeky twat !! How about paying them a decent salary then.
---------------------------------------------------------
I think you have me confused with someone who gives a sh1t.
Bleu,
sure, but nobody was claiming or asking any privileges. All was implied was that they should be treated like any other human being, like you and me, for example.
I'm saying that working on the building does not give them any privilege like when somebody says "who build those malls..? its them the labors .."
bleu,
why is that? are you saying that only owners/partners are welcome inside those malls?
aami: they build the malls because somebody is paying them to do the work, they're paying 0% of the cost of a mall, so they don't become partners by using their hands.
wat is this!!!world is getting crazy..this is what we call DISCRIMINATION...
damn .. who build those malls..? its them the labors ..they hv onl the weekend to go out and roam around..chitchat with their frnds etc..
so true.
shoeaddict,
They want a sterilized society, like in the movies.
They are not more than a bunch of idiots drunk by wealth, whose ignorance will be eternalized by History!
people who fall asleep on benches at a shopping mall is now a symptom of anti social behavior?
anybody clarify?nicaq?
jonboy,
"a deep routed hatred for anyone that is not an Arab or who hasn't got money."
as i said, thank god they are religious, imagine if they were not!
I think it is a good idea! whilst i don't condone what the government or locals or Expats are doing, this is based upon a deep routed hatred for anyone that is not an Arab or who hasn't got money. This won't change overnight, it will take years and whilst we are thinking about it, these guys are suffering.
“We are human beings dealing with human beings and realise that labourers also have shopping needs,” Shraim said.
wow, i am amazed with Shraim's ability to reach such a genius conclusion!
As Exiledsaint said "1980 apartheid in South Africa anyone"!
Amazing Gulf!
(thank god they are religious states, imagine if they weren't)
of the UAE government in alleviating the labours' plight.
es, no it's completely different.
jag, we're not a different country, this is Qatar.
think its only fair labourers have a place where they can go and relax with their friends.. be it even a mini mall ... at least they have a place to go and NOT get turned away .. they are human beings too .. the only difference they do hard labour under the sun, not educated(perhaps) like the rest of us .. not have the chances and opportunities that a lot of us have ... and are not able to share their views on forums like QL ... sometimes it looks like their basic human rights is violated here ... the labourers build this country .. yet they are treated like some unwanted aliens .. this wud never work with blue color workers in other countries ... where their skill is highly prized and appreciated... what is government of Qatar doing about the labourers?
1980s aparthied in South Africa anyone........
after all, labours bring good revenue to small shops too!
