Truckload of firecrackers seized - Doha

DOHA: Qatar’s land customs authorities have seized a truckload of firecrackers at the Abu Samra check post.

The consignment comprising 825 cartons of various types of firecrackers was coming into Qatar when customs inspectors intercepted it.

The customs officials have sent samples of the seized firecrackers to the Ministry of Interior for laboratory tests.

The Crime Investigation Department of the Ministry has launched a probe into the bid to smuggle the firecrackers into the country.

The development assumes immense significance as the Indian festival of lights (Deepawali) is being celebrated from tomorrow until Friday. Indians, especially Hindus from north India, celebrate the three-day festival with gusto and use a lot of firecrackers on all the three days.

The main festival falls on the third and the last day when most firecrackers are used to signify joy. An Indian family told The Peninsula yesterday that they spend between QR400 and QR500 on firecrackers during the festival.

“The firecrackers available in Qatar are mainly Chinese. They are quite expensive and do not create noise,” said an Indian.

Firecrackers can be imported into Qatar only with official permission. But bids to smuggle them during the Indian festival can be explained by of the huge presence of Indians here

the ONE thing i'm happy is banned here...can enjoy Diwali without going half bloody deaf, what's not to like about that???...

Any ideas how many people end up with severe burns during Diwali EVERY YEAR back home?...

Any idea how many people PERMANENTLY damage their hearing?...

Any idea how much the fumes damage the environment?...

Any idea how scared & terrorized the little stray dogs feel?...

Any ideas the conditions under which child labourers live & work @ those factories in Sivakasi?.

Any idea what obscene amounts of money people literally send up in smoke?...

I'd rather stick with the sparklers, the sweets, lots of booze & good food! :)...HAPPY DIWALI EVERYONE!!!...

I think there is a ban but the time allowed can't be 6 AM to 6 PM, nobody bursts crackers during the day..

Haven't been home for Diwali since 2006 so don't know what are the exact timings...

Rule of the land....if they say no firecrackers, so be it. Festivals can be celebrated without fire crackers. No need to buy crackers illegally.
