Trolling: Who does it and why?

An internet "troll" has been jailed for mocking dead teenagers on various websites. Public figures, including Stephen Fry and Miranda Hart, have also been victims of trolling. So what is it and why do people do it?

The word comes from a Norse monster but the troll is a very modern menace. For some it's the internet equivalent of road rage, vandalising a grave, or kicking a man when he's down.

Trolling is a phenomenon that has swept across websites in recent years. Online forums, Facebook pages and newspaper comment forms are bombarded with insults, provocations or threats. Supporters argue it's about humour, mischief and freedom of speech. But for many the ferocity and personal nature of the abuse verges on hate speak.

In its most extreme form it is a criminal offence. On Tuesday Sean Duffy was jailed for 18 weeks after posting offensive messages and videos on tribute pages about young people who had died. One of those he targeted was 15-year-old Natasha MacBryde, who had been killed by a train. "I fell asleep on the track lolz" was one of the messages he left on a Facebook page set up by her family.

Moderators of QL are a joke. They seem to be driven by ego and racist feelings

By Amedeo• 8 Oct 2011 08:04

thats why sites should have good rules and moderators. If they see abuse. Whack it. Moderation is a skill in itself. Being careful not to be too heavy handed on good natured banter and so choke a good site.

As for free speach? The purpose of free speach is to allow for the petitioning of personal rights such as liberty and happiness. These are positive aspirations. It is not for the purposes of harming others.

well, a Kid on this page was calling my QL lost name" DotCom", to tell you, i didn't hide myself, but a KIND OF WASTA type relationship works on QL, that some times vanish those who's voice differ from certain group of people.

I think the term troll is used to casually. Just because a person wakes up on the wrong side of the bed and engages in a personnel attack it doesn't make them a troll.  On the other hand, if all they do is engage in personnel attacks and have never contributed in a meaningful way to a forum, then yes, they are a troll.

expressing ideas that the majority don't like counts as "Trolling"?

or is it only when getting into personal aggression?

I believe the best option is to do away with personal details on the profile. Yes, they can be used to register and then kept on data base by admins - but should not be displayed for all to see..

By happygolucky• 14 Sep 2011 22:14
happygolucky

@gadarene..ideally yeah being truthful about oneself in our profiles as a minimum sounds right  .... but who knows better than you that the said info is used to target the individual........ for me and many others not acceptable... having said that do we really tend to interact based on what you are in real life or it is based on how basically you behave, get on with others and what you say. Whatever you write on your profile if you are good, you are good .... I hardly peep into ones profile unless otherwise called for.... and I  personally would give out about myself only to the people with whom I connect,  am comfortable with and in person, for everyone else I am a Dream Merchant...:) By doing so atleast I avoid being targetted based on my profession or the company I work with, basically forcing the person who wants to target me to work harder and in all probability he wouldnt be able to go very far as then I can be anything post after post, let him keep running behind me to get me....he wanted to get some fun out of me I get fun in making him tired to get to me....fair enough, isnt it....:) and it is not about hiding something but avoiding unncessary hassle...people who would eventually matter would know me, for others who am I doesnt matter as they dont matter to me who they are.

Yeah and certain trolls seem to get away with anything and everything without getting banned! I wonder what's their secret (or whose secrets they hold on to) ;-)

By britexpat• 14 Sep 2011 21:28
britexpat

Trolls just want attention. Its the same on QL as anywhere else :O)

By Alumnar• 14 Sep 2011 21:27
Alumnar

That's exactly why I'm a suitcasepacker from Tuvalu - because in the end it is nobodies' business and it's my decision what I disclose or not. It would help many people to keep their wide mouths shut and avoid conflicts and hassle. They should know better than to disclose their lives to others and then play holier than saints! But the best part is some trolls actually think they are 'adored' and 'respected' when in fact they are considered 'despicable' and others just 'put up with them' for the sake of peace! So those who don't have the guts to stand up and be honest - continue to be a troll. It suits you perfectly ;)

By anonymous• 14 Sep 2011 20:54

@ happygolucky, there's a difference between revealing a lot about oneself & just being truthful in one's profile which on QL is really the most basic info.,if someone can't be truthful about that, how can they be expected to be taken seriously?...& if these trolls use that minimal info. to falsely accuse & malign someone what does one do?...not be honest in one's profile?... to me that is not an option if i don't want to be considered a troll myself!...because only a troll or someone with something to hide wouldn't reveal their true nationality, age & profession right?..that's basic info. nothing indepth or revealing there...

I personally know a few trolls in QL..:)

By happygolucky• 14 Sep 2011 19:08
happygolucky

yeah, it is hard to keep quite when they are maligning someones reputation/ name, etc... you need to put forth your point...but then this is not part of the first lesson of being on an internet forum which IMO says dont reveal so much about yourself which can be used against you. However, there are times when we tend to say somethings about ourselves in good faith or rather when we get carried away emotionally for any reason or just like that which then is used against us by such trolls. But still feel that ignoring would help shut them up without doing any further damage to self as they dont matter and those that matter they wouldn't care.

By anonymous• 14 Sep 2011 18:56
anonymous

Sadists, Cowards, Vindictive, Loners etc. or people having these combined traits  may engage in such practices to gratify themselves because they know the retorts won't be that damaging to their lives..

If laws were made against such crimes and well implemented, things would improve.

By jayca• 14 Sep 2011 18:48

But is it bounded by law of Qatar? Different countries, different laws..., best way is to ignore such trolls :) i thought trolls are cute, i have such troll dolls when i was a kid, now they evolved into a diffrent way :(

By anonymous• 14 Sep 2011 18:33
anonymous

ignoring them is one thing...but what happens when they get personal?...like falsely accusing someone or maligning that person's name knowing full well that their accusations are a figment of their imaginations, then what?...ignoring something like that may be inferred by many as acceptance or acknowledgement of the accusations...it's not just black & white with this, there are grey areas depending on the situation...

By happygolucky• 14 Sep 2011 18:16
happygolucky

They are part and parcel of such online forums .... accepting their presence and be able to handle them is what is required...the best is to ignore them as they feed on responses which they instigate. Some more insight by our friend Darcula:http://www.qatarliving.com/node/338402

And I thought some of the trolls around QL were vicious!Think we can get any of em jailed too?Seriously some people can be such sadistic demons. All this for what? Do they think they have achieved some great success?Beats me really!I can't even imagine how pathetic a life they may have to drive them to do such acts for kicks!
