Tragedy strikes at Bastille Military Parade in France
Tragedy struck at the France military parade day on Thursday night when a truck charged over the crowd, killing at least 80 people on the spot.
The Bastille Day fireworks were at display at the French resort in Nice, when the truck sped two kilometers into the crowd before the driver was shot dead. The attacker has been identified as a French-Tunisian citizen, with several guns and ammunitions found stashed in his truck.
The President of the French Republic, Hollande stated, "France was struck on its national day ... the symbol of freedom".
Witnesses reported "absolute chaos" and terror on the scene. The celebrations on the promenade quickly became a ghastly scene of death and terror, while people fled in all directions to save themselves and their families from the hurtling truck.
A twitter account, SOS Nice, was created in emergency to track down loved ones. Relatives and friends tweeted pictures of their loved ones who might have been present at the scene of tragedy.
Witnesses claim that the driver looked nervous as he started crushing people under his truck. He then proceeded to draw out his gun and shoot at the police, before they shot him dead.
Security measures have been stepped up and the country is on high alert after the harrowing incident.
