Egyptian police say at least 19 people have died after a hot-air balloon crashed near Luxor in the country's south.

The balloon was carrying several foreign nationals when it went down near the tourist town on Tuesday, state-run Nile TV said.

Ezzat Saad, the governor of Luxor, told Nile News that there were three people in hospital, including the Egyptian pilot of the balloon who suffered from 70 percent burns.

He did not specify the nationalities of the two other injured foreigners in hospital, but said one of them was undergoing surgery.

Saad listed the nationalities of the people on board as nine from Hong Kong; four Japanese; two Belgians; two British; two French; one Egyptian, in addition to the Egyptian pilot.

Ahmed Aboud, a spokesman for companies that operate balloon flights in the area, told Reuters news agency that the crash happened after a gas explosion when the balloon was 300 metres above the ground.

RIP... :(

Agree with Brit, Incidents do happen, but does that mean Company that Operates Hot Air Balloon Flights out of Luxor would stop their Operations, Pending Conclusive Investigation by Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority..?

Well they should have known that Egypt was not a safe place. The country itself seems to be in chaos. Perhaps they wanted to show that they were brave and this is what unfortunately happened

Even this balloon suspended in Egypt is evidence of the chaos and organized in Egypt on the grounds that the chaos in Egypt Organization and other countries no organization to chaos but you mess death now would be to terrorism in Egypt or that chaos will challenge terrorism, this equation is fair in Egypt on the grounds that the revolution happened twice the second time either do not know where the trend will go to the country to self-determination or to Revolution

"Could be a terrorist sabotage."

If the terrorists (from your point of view)are already ruling; what would be the point?

A very tragic accident no doubt. The reason for the explosion will certainly have to be investigated. As of now, naturally, many questions and speculations are arising as to how such a crash was possible.

maikamar: fact of the matter is ppl died in a hot air balloon, n yes it happened in Egypt so deal with it.

In my opinion anyone who goes to Egypt now ruled by radical brothel-hood is setting themselves up for problems.

I dont like the title of this piece of news. It says people die... while it should say people died .... Tourists dont die every time they are in Egypt on a hot air balloon? You are giving bad publicity to a great country that has been receiving tourists for hundreds of years now! Please consider your words before just spilling the news.. you are messing with reputation here

Sad. May they rest in peace. Accidents do happen, but perhaps safety standards need to be looked at.
