ToastMasters Club for Urdu speaking

rbakali
By rbakali

I heard last week in a social gathering that a number of higher-ranking Toastmaster of Pakistani (http://www.ptmqatar.com/ Professional Toast
Masters ) origin are in confer to launch a Toastmasters club for Pakistan’s in Urdu language. This is great news for natives Urdu speaking like me; individuals who are handicap to express themselves in English language.
Apparently that it needs 30 members to start with.
Those who would like to join please suggest their names. Once we have 30 members we would put formal request towards Professional Toast Master to announce the Urdu club.

I very much agree with Mathboy, when you join a club to learn something you learn it by sharing your experience with peoples from different countries.

People should attend upcoming PTM meeting. However, I would recommend joining more diverse and less exclusive toastmaster clubs. Largely one nationality-dominant clubs, occupation-based clubs do not well coincide with the idea of learning and practicing communication skills.

BR sis, you can certainly visit the PTM club meeting as a guest with your brother.

PTM is a different club and it has got nothing to do with Urdu Toastmasters, which is still at idea level, for which we are waiting for rbakali's update.

I would also recommend you Al-Noor Toastmasters Ladies Club, which I believe is exclusively for ladies. This club I feel will be better than PTM as it has more cultural diversity. Please see this thread for more information:

Dot.Com, Toastmaster concept is to develop public speaking, communication and leadership skills. Members are assigned projects and sometimes asked to speak on their feet as well as play different roles which complement each other for the purpose of effective communication.

This club will be unique as all the activities will be conducted in Urdu.

Interested? It will be a good experience.

Mathboy,

I liked the idea of two-fold approach by using the Toastmasters way to promote Urdu Toastmasters Club.

I would say that we can make it open for all those who wants to learn cultural aspects of URDU and ENGLISH. Once the club is formed I think that people will blend in, I assure you all, its going to be an excellent experience.

I don't know who said this but I think you all will like it.

If you want to praise your God say it in Arabic.

If you want to express your love do it in URDU.

If you want to insult some one do it in English. (short and Effective)

tooba24, I liked your comments about English as a language of communication in club as this is what we need in our professional lives. I have a common viewpoint. However, on the personal front, I view it differently; we need to promote Urdu language as well as develop our skills in Urdu. We have taken Urdu for granted. How many people we see around who can speak and express themselves well in Urdu… unfortunately, not many…

I don't comprehend why Urdu Toastmaster will not be well-suited for the development of both public speaking and leadership skills. No doubt Urdu is not a language of science and technology; it is subordinate to many richer languages when it comes to terseness and epigrammatic force. Urdu, as we see today seems less outwardly polished, but that does not mean it is crude inwardly. It has clear expressions, fineness, and if used skillfully gives speakers a unrivaled power of packing their thoughts into the smallest possible space in writing and speaking vis-à-vis English which is remarkable for its power of succinctness.

We shall take what entire toastmaster concept offers and adopt it to our own purpose. A two-fold approach, toastmasters-way and promotion of Urdu will establish Urdu Toastmaster club as a classic for Urdu-speakers. English clubs and Urdu clubs are not mutually exclusive. I encourage everyone to join English Toastmaster club but Urdu Toastmaster is certainly a special one which may not fall in everyone’s specific province.

rbakali bro, my support and help is always there for my Pakistani brothers and sisters but lets not include my name in the list of members ...the reason for that is ,I have so many commitments with PWA activities and being an officer of PTM club my hands are full...I might not be able to do justice with my role in Urdu Toastmasters so my appologies for that...but I can motivate other Urdu speaking friends of mine to approach you people who are not a part of PTM or any other Toastmasters club and join you in the Urdu Toastmaster Club

with regard to the comments given by Malang on already existing Urdu Toastmaster club....I am quite (99%) sure there is none ...but let me re-check for that (1% doubt) with few high ranking TM officers in Qatar and get back to you!!

Rightly said that it may not serve the purpose fully.... let us take it "half full" and say it will serve the purpose upto certain extent.

Once we are in; please motivate us for English club also.

By tooba24• 14 Feb 2010 11:16
tooba24

Rbakali bro,Properly chosen words, timmings, body language and expressions are all about speaking...its all about polishing ur speaking skills and as you said speaking sense has to be in the right dimension but Leadership skills are totally different ...

In the TM activity Leadership skills are developed when you are assigned certain tasks which comes in your domain... leadership track is another responsibility in Toastmaster activity and I feel Urdu Toastmaster will not serve the purpose fully to enhance both speaking & leadership qualities

By rbakali• 14 Feb 2010 11:05
rbakali

The facts tooba24 motioned are perfectly fits in our daily business routines as most of the time we have to communicate in English.

However leadership is another skill which need to be polished. Leadership is not only speaking but speaking sense in right way with properly chosen words, timings, body language, expressions etc.

By having Urdu will certainly enhance the circle then someone may motivate us to go for English also.

Its a good idea to form Urdu Toastmaster club...you may contact the Toastmaster International directly or you can do it through one of our local Toastmasters club such as Professional Toastmasters,Pakshama TMs & Pakistani Toastmaster clubs....I my self is a club officer in PTM and I can help you to find out the same....I think there are chances to begin an Urdu Toastmasters club as there is one TM club here called (Qtel Arabic Toastmasters) and all the proceedings are done in Arabic there so I believe similarly you can do it in Urdu...

Toastmaster activity is all about polishing your speaking skills and to communicate well in public. Now dont take me wrong but to be very honest most of us need a lot more practice to communicate in English rather than in Urdu. This doesn't make Urdu any less significant and I feel proud to communicate with my people in my language but when we are living in Bilingual society then whether we like it or not English becomes our basic requirement.

Being Pakistani and some Indians we speak Urdu fluently and to speak publicaly in Urdu language doesn't seems like a chalange to me?? whereas in English it is and when it comes to intereact with other people and all other activities such as competitions/workshops etc everything is conducted in English ...so I feel we need to practice our speaking skills in English more than in Urdu.

Btw wish u all the best & regards to all.

By mathboy• 14 Feb 2010 09:44

rbakali, I agree with hrkureshi. We need to contact Toastmaster International directly to find out whether they will allow the Urdu Toastmaster club. We don't need any other club in Qatar to facilitate this. Please ask them this specific question and let us know what they have said. In case of no from them, we may still go ahead and form an Urdu Club under a different banner.

Thanks for the detailed information, which may set proper guidelines for this proposed club.

We do understand that 'Toastmasters' gathering follow the rules and regulations so do this club would follow... and so on.

I had some discussion with senior toastmasters and they suggested to gather 30 members and we started to gather members here.

a member "mathboy" asked two question one related to approval from Toastmasters international and other about no. of initial members. If you kindly answer these queries.

At end of the day objective remains same Leadership and communication.

Hello everyone. I'm quite amazed by the enthusiasm all of you have for public speaking. But as far as Toastmasters business is concerned, there are certain things that you ought to know.

If you want to inaugurate a 'Toastmasters' club, firstly you need to register yourself with the Toastmasters International. Everything that is carried out in the meetings is done according to the guidelines and rules provided to the registered clubs by the TMI. That includes just about everything from the sitting arrangement to every word spoken by individuals present in the gathering. We can't not deviate from the rules. Now here is the glitch, as per the rules and my knowledge, so far urdu language is not registered with TMI And that includes Arabic language as well, which is a movement still in the pipeline. No club, including PTM, has the authority to take such an initiative. Therefore, legally you can not inaugurate an Urdu Toastmasters club without the approval of the headquarters. If you must, you can begin an urdu public speaking forum with any name but you can not use the platform of Toastmasters for this purpose.

On the 100th meeting, three new clubs were announced, i.e, Pak Shama TMs, PTM Advanced, Pakistani TMs Club and a separate one for the children of TMs from the age 12-18 called Pak Gavel Club. But they were, and shall be carried out in English.

Having said that, I'm in no way trying to discourage you. All of you are welcome to visit TMs meetings any time you want. I assure you that it is a great learning opportunity for everyone.

rbakali, I have two things in mind about the club:

1. We need to have a confirmation from Toastmaster International (US) that we can from a group where the communication will be in Urdu.

2. I am not quite sure that 30 members is an absolute requirement. We may need to recheck this. I am a former toastmaster and have been to many toastmaster clubs in Qatar and other countries where number of members for most of the clubs were between 15-25.

To being with it is "Toastmaster". Before you all commit to join, you should realize that all clubs meet twice a month. So you will need to ensure that you are free in the evenings of the toastmasters meetings.

I shall check with Senior ToastMasters about it.... What I understood it was 30 to start with.

rbakali, Is it possible to form the club with members less than 30?

Yousri, There is no condition whatsoever. Toastmaster clubs generally conduct two meetings (2 hours) a month. If you are leaving for long interval, then obviously it won't be beneficial for you as the essence of the club is to attend the meetings and participate.

Mathboy, is it compulsory that those who join this new Urdu Club should be available here at doha all the time? Because i will be leaving next month, inshAllah.
