TIME MAGAZINE'S QUOTE ON SACHIN TENDULKAR...

laplandsql
By laplandsql

WE HAVE BEEN CELEBRATING THIS QUOTE IN FACEBOOK..STILL, FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T SEEN....HERE IT IS. FOR ALL THE INDIANS AND SPORTS LOVERS...

"When Sachin Tendulkar travelled to Pakistan to face one of the finest bowling attacks ever assembled in cricket, Michael Schumacher was yet to race a F1 car, Lance Armstrong had never been to the Tour de France, Diego Maradona was still the captain of a world champion Argentina team, Pete Sampras had never won a Grand Slam.

When Tendulkar embarked on a glorious career taming Imran and company, Roger Federer was a name unheard of; Lionel Messi was in his nappies, Usain Bolt was an unknown kid in the Jamaican backwaters. The Berlin Wall was still intact, USSR was one big, big country, Dr Manmohan Singh was yet to "open" the Nehruvian economy.

It seems while Time was having his toll on every individual on the face of this planet, he excused one man. Time stands frozen in front of Sachin Tendulkar. We have had champions, we have had legends, but we have never had a Sachin Tendulkar and we never will."

What do all these greats have in common... They were the best at scoring points. In sports Scoring points is how you win... so these gentlemen surround Tendulkar... There is only one way to make this list .... EXCELLENCE ...PERIOD!

Having children is a religious responsibilty and is known as plating on a sticky wicket. Non child bearing women are known as raising the umpires finger and children are referred to as 'bouncers' until the males reach puberty then they become a 'good lenght'

Religious scholars who make edicts on tendulkism will be called TURs (third umpire referals)

however you can only make three challenges in your life. If you deviate from the rulings them this will be known as 'ball tampering' and you will get a 10 run penalty. (100 runs are needed to get into heaven by doing good deeds like getting married, known as bowling a maiden over...)

Why is Gyanendra Pandey not in the best team?

By Arien• 1 Aug 2010 08:26
Arien

WK well, a worlds best would be diifficult task for even the experts. and any line up can easily be argued..

I would never ever rate Marshall over Lille and Thomson. Many quick bowlers were in the game but variations and accuracy are the key.

By anonymous• 1 Aug 2010 08:19
anonymous

Abe Warne was batting at No. 8 in the great Aussie squad and Marshall was batting at 8 in the invincible Windies squad. They are more than handy batsmen. Marshall is rated as the best quick among the Windies long line of fast bowlers and he surely has to be there.

By Arien• 1 Aug 2010 08:19
Arien

Gilly was an agressive player but can never be the worlds best 6 or 7 to add in a line up. You guys are just being excited on those few explossive innings, he was not consitant enough with a test average of below 50.

Jacko Those days when sachin had the skipper Cap, we never had a balanced team we were just 11 when other teams were playing 14 and 17, we all know it, we were playing all the ODIs without the 5th bowler, a 6-1-4 was our only possible combination..reason being

1. we never had a good wicket keeper batsman

2. Hardly had good allrounders

3. India for past many decades had only one lead pacer and no supporting one to run in from the other end. when it was kapil the other end was weak with manoj prabhakar, chetan shrama..etc when srinath got in to his rythm after getting hammerd for years he had no partner to support, then comes sahir khan now he has the other end a bunch of them getting rotated.

It was not the captaincy issue alone, it was the team which failed him as capain.

By Arien• 1 Aug 2010 08:10

WK lol.. sorry he is No 7 , I agree ;) . your team's tail starts after Gilly, which is the last hope of the line up and who is a aggressive but never consistant batsman.:)

Sachin's issue as captian...

Sachin had spoken out during his brief tenure as Captian that he cannot lead a side chosen by somebody else. He had said something like let me choose my 11 then you can blame me if I loose.

He even wanted to take this up with the board. But Gavaskar & I guess his coach advised him that it might hamper his career and not to bother about such trival things...as at the end of a career people see the personal record more than the captaincy success.

Sachin tried very hard to get Munaf Patel to play for India but the board wanted somebody with 1st class experience so Sachin tried to get him play for Mumbai but had to give in to politics...finally Munaf had to play for Gujarat I guess....and later on played in Indian team.

edifis for playing across the world there can only be one spinner in the team and I rate Warne much above Murali. If a track starts turning, Sobers can change to spin. He can bowl just about any kind of spin.

By edifis• 1 Aug 2010 07:16
edifis

WK you left out Muralitharan!

By anonymous• 1 Aug 2010 06:11
anonymous

Ambrose was one I was most sceptical about but I was recently watching the highlights of his 7 for 1 spell against Australia so his name stuck out above Lillee.

Gavaskar for his performances against West Indies though he didn't take LBW decisions too well :P

Richards, that swagger alone is something. Such arrogance when facing bowlers bowling at 90 MPH without a helmet. The guy was special.

I was lucky enough to watch lara live in action twice, once in a test match in '94 against India when he hit 90 odd in the second innings and again in World cup semis in '96. The guy is special though they lost the '96 semis :(

By anonymous• 1 Aug 2010 06:02

WK it was a hard choice leaving out Richards for me but I'm glad to see you included him. Ambrose I think is another that was close to my team.

I thought we were having a discussion about cricket. Although sachin is a great player I wouldn't have him in my all time test side but I would have him in the one day one.

I have nothing against Indians and I remember the days when people used to say I was a Pakistani hater......

I used the example of the Olympic rower as part of this article was about how long sachin had played the game. This guy competed over 25 years and unlike sachin won the major honours each time.

@ exiled,i don't think you're racist mate,i just think you don't like Indians!...& therefore by extension,Tendulkar because he's an Indian...

As for that reply to your post about India lacking in sporting greats, your not knowing any of them is the same as me(& i'm willing to bet a s*&^load of others) never having heard of your 5-time olympic rowing champion...seriously,are you implying then that olympic rowing is more popular around the planet than chess or badminton???...i ask because Vishwanath Anand was(not sure if he still is) world no: 1 in the chess rankings for a significant period of time & Saina Nehwal who's world ranked no:2 in badminton...

It's fine not to like(or have a deep set hatred toward)a particular race or nationality mate, well actually it's not fine truth be told but at least have the b*&%s to be honest about it eh?...

(because I didn't know them either, except for Mirza, and I hardly think she is a "great" yet) and they are clearly outstanding in their fields. It's just that chess, badminton and a wrestling coach are not the kind of sports that the media jumps on and promotes. Maybe this is why they are not so well known outside of India or Asia. A lot has to do with the kind of media promotion they get and how widely watched their sport is.

By anonymous• 30 Jul 2010 03:11
anonymous

@ sag,Murali CHOSE to retire mate,he wasn't FORCED to,Tendulkar is still playing & wants to play...this isn't school or gully cricket we're talking about where "everyone gets a turn"!!! so that we can be "play fair"...the "fair" thing for ANY national team is that a consistently performing player gets to keep his place, simple, doesn't matter if he's been in the team for a year or a decade...he plays he stays...we can debate & speculate forever on if Virat or Raina would or would not have scored centuries but you or me or anyone else except God cannot guarantee it...so it would be taking a chance, when you have a player in form & scoring runs like Tendulkar is,it DOES NOT matter, how long he's been playing...

And on the contrary,it would be a REAL shame if Tendulkar quit now, while he's playing the way he is,your logic of "give others a chance" reminds me of school games back home!!! "be fair" "everyone should get a chance" "not only you just because you bat better than us."!!! this stuff doesn't apply out there on the world stage my dear friend,it's survival of the fittest, you want a place on the squad, you keep fighting, maintain your performance consistently & keep hoping that one of the big boys gets out of form or retires & you patiently wait your turn, that's how it is for ANY sport @ the NATIONAL level where one is representing the nation...& cricket is no different...

By laplandsql• 29 Jul 2010 22:26
laplandsql

how can you tell him to retire when he keep scoring 100s at the age of 37??? tendulkar should continue to play as long as he get runs..the age really doesn't matter...and his style of play is still the best in the world...

By sag• 29 Jul 2010 19:58
sag

gadarene, going by the same logic would you believe if murali played this game he would have claimed more wickets than randiv? if yes, then the same applies to tendulker. Yes, he has had it enough. it's others turn now. Suppose that virat kohli is denied place in team for tendulker for another 2 or 3 yrs, will he have the same platform to build his career as tendulker had? I am of the opinion that even virat could have scored a century on this flat track as did raina. Shame on tendulker for not thinking of retirement. As simple as that...

By anonymous• 29 Jul 2010 14:45

@ sag, please do not make the mistake of painting Tendulkar with the same brush as other senior members of the Indian team because the BIGGEST difference between them is that Tendulkar still delivers the goods like he did all those years ago when he started as a 16 year old...asking for limits to be put irrespective of perfomance makes no sense whatsoever, thank God you aren't an Indian selector else all Indians & the world @ large would be deprived of watching the skills of this little master thanks to your completely senseless logic...

The emphasis should be on performance,if a player is performing,he keeps his place on the team,IRRESPECTIVE of his age...i agree with you in that senior members of the squad shouldn't be selected IF THEY DON'T PERFORM & that has happened & continues to happen,non-performing,out of form seniors being selected over younger players who should be selected BUT that is NOT TRUE for Tendulkar, are you guaranteeing that some junior player selected instead of Tendulkar would have scored the century he did & would still be @ the crease @ this crucial stage for India???...if yes, then your logic makes sense if not, then what you're saying is that some junior player be selected instead of Tendulkar despite the very high chance that his wicket will be taken by this highly skilled Sri Lankan attack???...there is no substitute for experience my friend,Tendulkar has faced this bowling attack on numerous occassion & he knows what to expect from most of these bowlers plus he's performing with the bat,can you say the same for some junior who has limited international exposure?...yup i thought not...

10dulkar the gr8 is the greatest batsman & todays double century is yet another proof. Ponting will have tough time to reach close to his achievements.

Tendulker deserves the admiration for his achievements. Can India being a country of billion people and a million cricketers afford to prolong his career just for his personal achievements. I think it's depriving other genuine youth of a deserving place in Indian team. Not only tendulker other seniors too are treated this way by indians without realising the unjustice done to other youth. I think there should be a limit an indian cricketer can serve in team irrespective of his performance. I think Pakistan is on right track now.

Exiledsaint, seems to me(& i think a lot of others will agree) that this is a case of sour grapes...your issue isn't actually with Tendulkar's batting or his records but the fact that he's an Indian & that seems to be something you can't digest...

You said & i quote,"in a country with no sporting greats..."...pray tell, how many world class sporting greats has your country produced???...i would say Zimbabwe but i'm 100% sure you're not a 60 year old Zimbabwean!!! well the little fella's gone & scored another one,he might even make this a double if he remains @ the crease, that would really ruin your weekend now wouldn't it?...*wink*!!! take it easy mate, there is only one SACHIN TENDULKAR acknowledged by ALL the greats of world cricket including the great Sir Don Bradman himself...i suggest you accept & deal with that fact...

He is great but there were better.

Bradman can't be compared to Sachin because Bradman was playing in the era of uncovered pitches.

Even in similar era Lara was better in test matches, Sachin can be called the greatest in One day history though he never won the One day world cup but you can't fault him for not stepping up. He was on fire in '96 and 2003 but was let down by that shocker of a pitch and other batsmen in '96 semis and the bowlers in 2003 finals.

In test matches Lara was a class apart, pity he never had support.

No one is as blind as those who do not want to see.....

If you read my posts I have said he is an exceptional batsman but you have to put his achievements into context. He is in the top 5 batsman of all time but playing a lot of tests doesn't really mean that much. Allan border was until recently the highest test run scorer not because he was the best just because he had been around a long time....

@Arien,don't bother mate,it's the green monster rearing it's ugly head is all *wink*!!!

After reading the comments above,I think we can safely say that exiledsaint's view would have been the complete opposite if Tendulkar was of some other nationality,i don't want to speculate on which specific nationality because that would be an assumption,so i'll leave it @ that, but you get my point i'm sure *wink*!...

The dead giveaway for me was the Steve Redgrave(who???) comment...???...olympic rowing???...yeah right...

No one can argued with bradman's record in any era. An average of 99 will never be beaten.

Maradona may be many things but a winner he certainly is. Singlehandedly won a world cup and two titles with Napoli.

I rate lara as better as he still performed in a poor west Indian side. Ponting as better as he played match winning or match saving innings against top quality opposition when it matter.

I see tendulka as an exceptional batsman but the true test for any sportsman is in the things he wins. Alas in his glorious career that is one major ommission.

I understand why the Indians are proud of him. It's a country with very few sporting greats

By Lafanga• 25 Jul 2010 12:20

There is no fighting laplandsql, you can always discuss who is the best batsman as per you. Among those I have seen playing live, it has to be Brian Lara and among the ones I saw on TV, Viv Richards.

please dont fight..i threw this topic to appreciate the great man.he is indeed someone who grew above the game. maradona isn't a legend, he is someone who didnt do justice to his talents..a bloody actor,in handling the ball, diving off a silly challenge, doping,or even as a coach...a big loser. in football if there is anyone to match tendulkar's acheivements,it wud be pele, zinade or thiery henry....but still tendulkar stands out..he have been playing for 20+ years and till date he was not involved in any controversy..each century he score, each run he score, each game he play ..is a new world record..and those records will never be broken..

By anonymous• 25 Jul 2010 08:41

@ exiledsaint,it's down to personal perception & choice @ the end of the day,but one thing is for sure, international media, like Time magazine, which is US based, where a significant % of the population have no idea what cricket is,speak so highly of him, don't hear the same tone for Bradman,Lara or Ponting & if we are going to get into specifics, bradman's was a completely different era, where they played like one test match every few months or something like that,FAR from the competitive, round the clock schedule that defines international cricket today so can't compare apples & oranges now can we?

Lara, hmmm, anyone have any idea where he is these days? sunning himself on a beach in Trinidad i presume...part of the little maestro's greatness,as it should be with all great sportsmen is their consistency & i think we can both agree,Lara's glory days are long behind him while Tendulkar is still very much at the top of his game,as for Ponting,he's a very good cricketer without a doubt, but Sachin Tendulkar he is not & he has admitted so himself,i believe his words were,"I have seen God,he bats at no: 4 for India.",equals don't speak of their colleagues with that kind of reverence,so i think it'd be fair to say he doesn't see himself at the same level as Tendulkar...

The OP is about Sachin Tendulkar the cricketer, doesn't say anywhere that he's better than Maradona or Tiger Woods or Zatopek, all of whom are greats in their respective sports so are you implying that Tendulkar is not a "true winner"?...or does he need to prove himself in football as well as golf to be termed a true winner???...well then,Maradona & Tiger should prove themselves with the cricket bat by that logic!!!

Funny how,it's always India's sub-continental neighbours who find it EXTREMELY difficult to admit to the genius of the little maestro & tend to bring up names of other good cricketers(including bowlers??? the guy is a batsman, apples & oranges again?)

ALL of whom i might add, have at some point/s in their careers admitted openly that Tendulkar was something else,i mean there are good cricketers & then there's Tendulkar...but of course,non-Indians ESPECIALLY our neighbours find that a VERY BITTER pill to swallow eh?...doesn't matter what you or me think @ the end of the day mate, the world's media, sport or otherwise, the world's top cricketers including Messrs. Ponting,Warne,Gilchrist,Murali etc all openly acknowledge this man's greatness...just so happens that he's Indian *wink*!!!

By anonymous• 25 Jul 2010 02:12

If we are talking legendary sportsman I would have maradonna, emil zatopek and tiger woods above him as well....... True winners

I'm a big fan of cricket and tendulka will go down as one of the greats in batting but as far as batting is concerned he is behind bradman, ponting and lara. As far as cricketers he is behind gilchrist, warne, murali, mcgrath and a couple of others.

I do understand he is indias greatest sportsman and that's why the Indians want to keep going on about him....er I mean celebrating

@ dot.com,because cricket, like football is a TEAM game,no one player can win a world cup,ANY world cup...because as a fellow QL'er said a couple of weeks back, there is no I in TEAM...get it?...nothing makes you anything if you question anyone's ability, that was just my assumption, which i've now corrected...

@ exiledsaint, you're not really a 66-yr. old Zimbabwean senior citizen are you mate?! *wink*!!!...you must be a HUGE Olympics rowing fan, because Steve Redgrave isn't exactly a household name now is he?...

Just so we're clear mate, football is my game, not a cricket fan but my 2 cents...

Sachin Tendulkar was never meant to captain India,he was only meant to do one thing, connect that cricket bat in his hands to that oncoming ball like arguably no other cricketer on the planet can,simple...having to focus on both batting & captaincy meant being unable to do full justice to either & the resultant dip in his form was obvious to everyone but how long did he captain the team for???...what about his achievements with the bat before & after that period?...c'mon mate, give credit where it's due, that's all i'm saying... be it Time magazine or the world's leading cricketers, all acknowledge this little fella's genius with the bat, surely they ALL can't be wrong?...

By Lafanga• 25 Jul 2010 00:40

well said gadarene about Sachin's captaincy, now will you please enlighten why India didn't win a single world cup during his long longer almost longest cricket career???

PS: Does it make me a Pakistani, if i questioned Sachin's ability ;)

He has been around a long time and is a great batsman. However he was a terrible captain and never really delivered the big innings against the strong nations. How many times did India win the works cup with him in the side?

As for being around a long time, you can look at others that achieved more success. Steve Redgrave won 5 consecutive gold medelas at the olympics in rowing. That is 5 winners medlas over 25 years in a power event. Now that is amazing

By anonymous• 24 Jul 2010 14:20

I guess this article brings into perspective....Sachin's achievement....barring injury he has never been out of form....when one compares this fact with the time period he has been playing....it is completely awe inspiring.

His performance had dipped here and there but he was never out of form ....while people like Gavaskar, Ganguly and Dravid have been woefully out of form at times....Sachin keeps the runs coming.

baldrick...the Opus is awesome!

Then there was a guy in my School who had more talent than Sachin....who answers to the name of Vinod Kambli....the difference between Sachin the achiever and Kambli the looser is nothing but - Discipline.

"The news that a book on Sachin Tendulkar will have his blood mixed in the signature page surprised many - not least the legend himself. Busy with the Test against Sri Lanka at Galle, Tendulkar was unaware of the furore created by the claims of the publisher of the Sachin Tendulkar Opus. But on Friday, he clarified - exclusively to TOI - that he was not involved in any such bizarre plan."
