Tianhe-1 outperforms the Jaguar
No, not cars, but Super Computers :O)
The Chinese computer Tianhe-1 took 200 engineers two years to build, and needs to be housed in 103 refridgerated cabinets.
It has a speed of 2.507 petaflops – 1.4 times as powerful as the current supercomputer, the Cray XT5 Jaguar at the U.S. Department of Energy, which has held the crown for the past year.
Professor Jack Dongarra, who compiles the rankings of the world’s fastest 500 supercomputers, said the Chinese computer ‘blows away the existing No 1 machine’.
So, do we need these types of machines ?
Well , Supercomputers allow research that could not otherwise be carried out because it involves such complex calculations.
Since we can't still understand the weather, is the investment worth it ??
Rofl ... Keep sunglasses with you always :O)
Cool... the next HALO should be awesome ;)
whats the use, its just gnna break down in a week or so..
Supercomputers are used by defence departments also to work out strategies and possibilities.
Amazing technology ....
Any invention are supposed to be praised and given applause.
Computers were initially developed to try and understand the weather.. Though the initial aim hasn't been fulfilled, the investment has been worth it. Same goes for this new line of supercomputers, their capability is mind boggling
I quote.... "They walk among us"

If it is somehow usefull to the critical calculations in medical science or agriculture it can be welcomed..
:o)
Supercomputers are for labs, not for the public domain ... yet !
