Thought i'd got a winner!...Alas No!
I'd just like to thank the people that emailed me with regards to helping me find a Villa for my family and I. After 12 months searching we received a call yesterday, went to meet a helpful lady and thought we had one nailed. To be honest for the price (12,500) it was a bargain. We were sold as we entered the front door. We baulked a little at the 12500 deposit and 3 months in advance ( 50,000 riyals total) but the Villa was still worth it and i was making arrangments to transfer money ect ect.)
Today i recieved a call stating that the Landlord now wanted 14,000 riyals, because it was a new contract, (even though the previous contract only started in Feb). So weve had to let it go and to be fair i think were just going to head back home to England. I could pay the extra, but my companies Housing allowance would leave me paying nearly 4000 riyals from my own pocket, which is unacceptable seeing as they are supposed to provide my housing. I came here by choice, i dont have to stay.
Some people will probably say that 14000, is about the right price for a good Villa and it probably is in Qatar, but I refuse to add to an already over-inflated rental market, purely because of the greed of some Landlords and agents.
One day the bubble will burst, it always does and they'll be alot of empty properties around here.
So once again thanks for to all those that tried to help. It truely was appreciated.
Your prose was so admired (I think it was copied almost without edit!) that perhaps you missed your true vocation and should have been a globe trotting journalist. Could have earned a fortune in Qatar and stayed here lol

The bubble will have to burst because rental price inflation has grown tenfold in comparision to salaries ect . Some people are too stupid to see it. Id like to be around to see it, but i wont. Still you live and learn dont ya. ![img_assist|nid=17864|title=Chicks dig Guys with skills|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=440|height=440]
I know how ya feel. When I have to start dipping int my housing allowance, I'll be leaving too. A lot of people I know have this rule of thumb and a few have left in the past year.
To have to dip 4000 though is ridiculous. Then 10% on 14,000 is another 1,400 next year. And so on, and so on...
The landlords are getting clever. If it hadn't been for the deposit I would have taken the house and smashed and ripped every inch of it. This would have defintely taught the landlord a lesson and a lot of money.
Guys my advice if you are not planning to stay in Qatar because of the increased rents make sure you smash everything intact in the house and leave the country immediately after doing that.
Good Luck and happy smashing
I believe you did the right thing by not letting in to the demands of the greedy landlord. My brother had a problem with his landlord who increased his house's rent by 60% and of the other tenants as. So what happened was that God Almighty saved them. The landlord's wife got seriosuly ill and he took it as a warning by the Supreme Power. So he backed off his plan to increase the rent. And now he has no intentions of increasing the rent fow two more years as per the new contract.
The situation in Qatar is becoming like HongKong the land there is extremely expensive. Hongkong doesn't had empty land Whereas Qatar has so much barren and unused land. Why doesn;t the Government lease the land to the expatriates. It claims that it has no options to curb the rising inflation. This suggestion has been posted many times recently in the Gulf-Times. Hope someone from the Royal Family reads the Gulf-Times
I hear ya!
Does this mean you're quitting your job or sending family back home??
Even our company is complaining about the same issue of you, when we got a good villa they suddenly increased the price when they have seen that we are interested. See how they greed they are... making money just by our gesture.., nonsense to increase but they tend to increase and increase because they know that some may afford to get it..
I hope that Qatari people and those are making money in real estate business come to their senses that.. xxxxx I mean the true happines in life is not making money!!! (huh! sigh... we all knows that they are already insensitive for such feelings for others)
