There is no news today

I have just gone cover to cover looking for a Qatar story to cut and paste from the Gulf Times today. But there are no stories that I believe would interest anyone, certainly nothing that qualifies as news.

So I guess no news is good news.

As GT have failed to report any news, do you have any news items instead?

Wages of unskilled workers ‘inadequate’ A study published by Qatar’s National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) on “The conditions of the unskilled labourers in the construction sector” has revealed that their wages and living conditions are far from being fair and adequate.  NHRC seeks sponsorship rule changesDOHA: Qatar’s National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) has called on the authorities to amend the sponsorship rules saying they impede the implementation of certain key provisions of the labor law. It has also cited repatriation of foreign workers by their employers without any justification and summary termination of job contracts of some as being against the spirit of the labor law.The study-cum-survey of the rights body reveals that a vast majority (48.7 percent) of those interviewed said that workers run away due to low salaries. While another 47.7 percent of the surveyed said that joblessness was the main cause of their escape from their sponsors.

Finance chiefs from major powers are to hold emergency talks by telephone to discuss ways to contain the latest turmoil on world financial markets, reports say.

Twin debt crises in the eurozone and the US have caused sharp falls.

Analysts say world leaders want to calm international markets ahead of exchanges reopening on Monday morning.

The rating agency Standard & Poor's on Friday downgraded America's top-notch AAA rating to AA+.

Markets have also been rocked by suggestions that the debt crisis in the eurozone could spread to Italy and Spain.

Sources in Rome quoted by AFP news agency said finance ministers of the G7 nations - the US, Germany, the UK, Japan, France, Canada, and Italy - would hold a telephone conference call to discuss the situation.

Japanese government officials told Reuters it would be "normal to assume" G7 finance chiefs would hold a phone conference before Asian markets open on Monday.

If you felt that the downgrading of the credit rating of US from AAA to AA+ is not an important news and has no impact to the global financial markets then you are terribly mistaken my friend. Even during the global economic crisis in 2008, they maintained their AAA rating when there was major economic downturn. Now it is more serious and all the studies converge to the possibility of another major economic downturn starting from US to the entire world. So chances are there may be increase in interest rates for existing loans, less availability of loans, more losss of jobs especially in these parts of the world, less investments etc. Even if people have money they will not invest and so this leads to lack of economic activity.
