theft by maids
ASAK and Hello!
Is it common for maids to steal from their employers? I have a maid through a cleaning service company and yesterday I believe she stole my jewelery. She denies stealing the jewelery, but no one else has been in our bedroom for the last 2 weeks. We live in a highly secure compound. She left in a rush yesterday, and I am 90% confident she took it. We went to the police and filed a report. I am naturally upset. Has this happened to other people? What can I do next? Any words of advice is appreciated. Thanks.
Can happen anywhere. Even in the most luxurious hotels of the world you can’t just leave your expensive possessions like that.
Zakmama you’re so good! You’re shocked you got stolen by a total stranger who entered your bedroom for the one and only time in his\her life? You’re just sweet.
:-D
When i picked my son up from school, i saw lots of car with car key in, handbag and engine on while the mum disappear to collect the child.
Never do that though ... been brought up in INdonesian no way i will leave my front door open or leave my car key inside while i am out to the shop.
You can't never be too careful.
sorry makes me giggle! Doha isnt virtually crime free its just not reported! we got broken into in our second week living out here, they stole just cash thankfully! And we have huge security walls around our villa with a locked garage and gate! Shocking really!!! We dont have a maid personally i have heard too many horror stories about things being stolen! But on the other side i see dudes leave there brand new porsches running with the keys in the ignition while they run in the shop! you certainly wouldnt do that back home it would get nicked!
I'm glad to hear you'll be more careful next time by taking preventative measures. Qatar IS virtually crime free but it's NOT perfect!! besides, you don't have to wait for something to happen for you to take action, regardless of where you live...its called being a sensible, responsible adult really.
I would suggest you also put a complaint to the cleaning company, maybe this way she can be prevented from stealing from someone else.
Sorry to hear about your experience, BUT always keep an eye out on the maids. Qatar is safe, but when it cames to this type of thing it is very common.
I know now it was a foolish thing to do. Living in the U.S all my life, I never had a theft issue ever! And I have had many different maids of all nationalities. I have only lived in Doha for 5 months and this villa for just 2. I felt at peace and safe here to raise my kids in a muslim country. Now I realize that I cannot trust anyone here and I need to teach myself to now see every worker who enters my home as a person who can steal from me. I do not like to be this pessimistic, but I am feeling I have no choice. It is a lesson learned that is for sure, but it is unfortunate that people make the victim of crimes feel worse. Everyone has told me Doha is virtually crime free, so I had no reason to believe otherwise.
You've done the only thing you could do for now by filing a report. If you fail retrieving the stolen jewelery then consider this a lesson learned because I have to say leaving your bedroom so easily accessible was a very foolish thing to do.
well, I think i have heard several reports from people that their maids have stolen some expensive items from them. I guess in your situation you are better off calling the police, if you are lucky the police might be able to get a search warrant for her place incase she still have them. But keep in mind that you really have no physical evidence that supports your claims.
I also think that it is very uncommon for some random people to go in people's houses and steal their stuff.
