For Texans and those wannabe Texans

Scarlett
By Scarlett

This came in my email...Hope you enjoy this as much as I do with the memories I have of home...To those that think Texans are arrogant...we aren't, we are just very proud of our birthplace and heritage.

TEXAS

Have you ever looked at a map of the world? Look at Texas with me just for a second. That picture, with the Panhandle and the Gulf Coast , and the Red River and the Rio Grande is as much a part of you as anything
ever will be. As soon as anyone anywhere in the world looks at it they know what it is. It's Texas . Pick any kid off the street in Japan and draw him a picture of Texas in the dirt and he'll know what it is. What happens if I show you a picture of any other state? You might get it maybe after a second or two, but who else would? And even if you do, does it ever stir any feelings in you?

In almost every man, woman and child, there is a person who wishes just once he could be a real live Texan and get up on a horse or ride off in a pickup. There is a little bit of Texas in everyone.

Texas is the Alamo. Texas is 183 men standing in a church, facing thousands of Mexican nationals, fighting for freedom, who had the chance to walk out and save themselves, but stayed instead to fight and die for the cause of freedom.

We send our kids to schools named William B. Travis and James Bowie and Davy Crockett, and do you know why? Because those men saw a line in the sand and they decided to cross it and be heroes.

John Wayne paid to do the movie(The Alamo) himself. That is the Spirit of Texas.

Texas is Sam Houston capturing Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana at San Jacinto .

Texas is huge forests of Piney Woods like the Davy Crockett and Sam Houston National Forests .

Texas is breathtaking mountains in the Big Bend.

Texas is the unparalleled beauty of bluebonnet fields in the Texas Hill Country.

Texas is floating(tubing) the rivers of the Hill Country on a hot summer day.

Texas is the beautiful, warm beaches of the Gulf Coast of South Texas.

Texas is beaches you can drive on and have many memorable bon-fires with close friends.

Texas is that warm feeling you get when someone asks where you're from. (ok...we are basically the only Americans that will answer the question "where are you from?", with Texas, instead of the US. We also give you distance in hours, not miles!!)

Texas is the shiny skyscrapers in Houston and Dallas.

Texas is world record bass from places like Lake Fork.

Texas is Mexican foods like nowhere else, not even Mexico .

Texas is chicken fried steak and world famous Bar-B-Q.

Texas is the Fort Worth Stockyards, Bass Hall, the Ballpark in Arlington and the Astrodome/Reliant Stadium.

Texas is larger-than-life legends like Michael DeBakey, Ann Richards, Denton Cooley, Willie Nelson, Buddy Holly, Gene Autry, Audie Murphy, Tommy Lee Jones, Waylon Jennings, Farrah Fawcet, Janis Joplin, Sandra
Bullock, Kris Kristofferson, Tom Landry, Eva Longoria, Darrell Royal, ZZ Top, Eric Dickerson, Earl Campbell, Nolan Ryan, Sam Rayburn, Howard Hughes, George H. W. Bush, Lyndon B. Johnson, and let's not forget
GEORGE STRAIT- PANTERA, the Big Bopper, Tex Ritter, George Jones, Clay Walker, Mark Chestnut, to name ONLY a few.

Texas is great companies like Dell Computer, Texas Instruments, EDS and Compaq, Whataburger, Southwest Airlines, Bell Helicopter and LOCKHEED MARTIN AEROSPACE, Home of the F-16 Jet Fighter and the JSF Fighter, Valero.

Texas is NASA.

Texas is huge herds of cattle, beautiful horses and miles of crops.

Texas is home to the world famous King Ranch.

Texas is home to the most amazing sunsets of gold over an empty field..

Texas is hundreds of deer running around neighborhoods and fields.

Texas is skies blackened with doves and fields full of deer.

Texas is a place where towns and cities shut down to watch the local high school football game on Friday nights and for the Cowboys on Monday Night Football, and for the night In Old San Antonio River Parade in San
Antonio.

To drive across Texas is to drive 1/3 the way across the United States .

Texas is ocean beaches, deserts, lakes and rivers, mountains and prairies, and modern cities.

Texas is the only state that was a Republic before it became a state.

Our capitol is the only one in the country that is taller than the capitol building in Washington , D.C. And we can divide our state into five states at any time if we wanted to! We can become a republic again at any time the voters of Texas choose, and we included these things as part of the deal when we came on as part of the US.

God Bless Texas!!!

For starters, you could re-read the original post by Scarlett. And that is just, the greatness of one state, Texas. Truly you jest about not knowing about the positives that come with being an American!

We, Americans, are the people that people love to hate. We are used to the criticism and nasty remarks by others from all over the world. Some are bothered by these comments. I, on the other hand, find them ignorant, but amusing.

That "plastic front"---hmmm

We, Americans,(over or under the Dixie line?) like to dwell on the positives, not the negatives. Those positives and all that that encompasses is what we embrace and hoop and holler about.

You just gotta be from the US to get it! It is a spirit of hope, dreams and pride. It is a great thing to be a part of....so sad you're not one of the lucky ones.

I am sorry, but I did not see anything wrong..

We are called Brits.. No problem.

Mr Paul just called Americans Yanks.. I recall , you were not happy when this term was used once before, yet now you let it go.

Double standards methinks..

But, we are all expatriates here, so why not get on.

I've been there way back '97. Attended training at Union Carbide in Victoria. Luckily my Aunt lives there so I have the opportunity of seeing a lot of places. I've been to Corpus Christi, Goliad, Fort Lavaca, San Antonio (love the Alamo, riverwalk, Hooters, Sea World), Houston, NASA, Astrodome, 6 Flags and bargains at San Marcos. I love the foods. They told me that everything is BIG in Texas and definitely they are. How I miss Texas!!! Oh Princess Diana and Mother Teresa died during those times ... Hope that I'll be back again there someday. There's still a lot of places to go ....

Lucky we have you and Alexa to watch out for people's sensitivities. I remember Abu American once saying that QL was a clique. Sadly, your abuse of Brit highlights that.

He was having a joke on the subject (something you and Alexa often do). yet you chose to take offense and have a go at him.

The significance of the name Karankawa is not certain, but it is generally held to mean "dog-lovers" or "dog-raisers." That rendering seems creditable, since the Karankawas had dogs that were a fox or coyote-like species.

As Abu said...the entire US was stolen..which you chose to differentiate as being the country not individual states..however...each state was at one time part of the American Indian nation..so therefore stolen as a whole. Some states, and yes, Texas was one of them, actually stole it from another country such as France, Britain, Mexico, Spain...nothing new unless you've never read your American history book.

Also...those Texans in the Alamo might have been put to death for what they believed in but quite a few of them were NOT from Texas but chose to come fight for it. Crockett was from Tennessee and specifically came to fight for Texas freedom from Mexico. If you care to get a full history lesson on Texas...honey, I am more than ready...

If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you; that is the main difference between a dog and man.

While enjoying an early morning breakfast in a Ft. Worth cafe, four elderly Texas ranchers were discussing everything from cattle, horses, and weather, to how things used to be in the "good old days."

Eventually the conversation moved on to their spouses. One gentleman turned to the fellow on his right and asked, "Roy, aren't you and your bride celebrating your 50th wedding anniversary soon?"

"Yup, we sure are," Roy replied. "Well, are you gonna do anything special to celebrate?" another man asked.

The old gentleman pondered this for a moment, then replied, "For our 25th anniversary, I took the misses to San Antonio. For our 50th, I'm thinking 'bout going down there again to pick her up."

and wear those chaps and snakeskin boots, you will definitely NOT enjoy your visit as the cowboys will think you are gay and run you out of town faster than you can whistle Dixie...

As far as Abu is concerned..he got there as fast as he could...We have a bumper sticker in Texas I've seen a LOT...its by people who are originally from elsewhere..it reads...

Not Native Texan, but got here as fast as I could!!

You've picked up the Texan Lingo already..

I suppose if Abu American can be an honorary Texan, then I can be an onnery one also.

honey, if you would use your brain, research things and not go by what you'd heard..you'd realize George W is NOT FROM Texas but from Connecticut...sheesh,...and you call yourself a JOURNALIST....Georgie just came to Texas as fast as he could because we have more electoral votes...and an awesome state. You know..from your comments I would venture a guess that you might have LIVED or live in the UK but are originally from another country...

besides which...lifeisbeautiful wasn't trying to shut you up..he was giving HIS opinion...you would do well to learn the difference..

You're correct about having the right to express your opinion. No reason to shut up now...please keep going.

Well, GW Bush may be from Texas, but that doesn't mean that we like him or approve of what he has done. I'm sure every country has a GW Bush that they would like to keep in the closet. But then again, the post wasn't about politics, it was about the great state of Texas.

Good for u scarlett that u're proud - I however would definitely not be proud to come from a country let alone a state that produces a war criminal for a head of state who feels he can get away with murder and who's also a completely backward country yokel (i am of course referring to none other than our dear friend George W. Bush). This is my opinion and I'm sure u'll disagree....

Everyone who joins QL has a choice/or not of putting whatever sign, symbol,or picture for their personal avatar.

Of course, I chose to announce to everyone looking from any place of the planet logging on to QL that I am from Texas. It is just that Lone Star pride.

I've been to every place mentioned in that email. I have even climbed the Guadalupe Mountain, the highest peak in Texas, where the view is glorious.

I miss the bluebonnets growing this time of year there. I miss home. God bless Texas.

On the cage, a Yankee Zoo will have the name of the animal and then the scientific name in Latin.

Whereas, a Texas Zoo will have the name of the animal and the recipe.....!

I have already bought my leather chaps and snakeskin boots..
