Proteas lost by 153 runs at Gwalior........

Sachin have proved to the World that Age is just a number and not a hurdle in his ways in climbing mountains......What a stylish and comfortable game he played and made all his critics quiet for another couple of years with HIS great performance.

Saeed Anwar says he has no regrets at losing his ODI record as it's broken by a great like Sachin

Whatever A victory is VICTORY! even by ONE run.....

Nodoubt it stops my heartbeats for a few moments.....with a leopard dive sachin stopped one run when they need 6 runs in 2 balls and finally we WON!

Today....it seems we will make over 320 and put real pressure on Proteas to close the series at 2-0; I may sound very optimistic but what to do, it is our most passionate game.

At 22 overs India 145/1; with Sachin standing strong!

Come on INDIA;

Also great save by Nayyar earlier on, that was a certain boundary, he saved three runs for sure...

but I am pretty certain Tendulkar's dive was a boundary...

But I think SA settled for three to keep Parnell on strike so that's a moot point...

By Arien• 21 Feb 2010 20:16
Arien

WTF ... 20th over five down...

71 runs required when just 2 wickets left..and the game reaches to a stage where 1 ball 3 to win??

we need bowlers guys ... we are zahir less, yuvraj and ghambir less.

Tendulkar .. wht a dive to save that crucial boundry which decided the match.!!!!

This is exactly the scenario I had at the back of my mind when I said that India should get SA to bat as close to the fourth day as possible... I didn't want to say it explicitly so as not to sound too optimistic but it has come to pass any way... If SA can bat out the fourth day and a good part of the fifth which they need to ensure that India does not walk away with this test, then the series win for them would be well deserved... but that's highly unlikely, India is all over them...

the conditions were not bad for bowling... Dhoni losing the toss didn't matter much, the spinners did get purchase...

But yeah the wickets falling initially was unlucky... but I didn't think any of the top order got out to fantastic deliveries... most playing away from the body...

And yeah Nehra not clicking was unlucky

But good job by Raina and the spinners to make something out of the match...

India really has to do something about its recently acquired bad habit of not being able to do well in non bi-lateral tournaments... T20, world cup, champions trophy, this tournament here...

Chapell was against calling Tendulkar the best batsman once, now its against Team India.. aussies still thinks it works lol

Chappell has a point , in stating Indian bowling need to have champs, agreed. the pacers were not consistent enough, but to our luck one of the lot always will be performing , with some economy and wickets.

Like he said to stay in the slot "long term", we do need to perform consistently, to keep up the win/loose ratio.

Otherwise , like verisi said , India have beaten aussies when all their legents were in.Chappell ddnt reaaly look in to the stati when he bluffed.

By anonymous• 12 Jan 2010 21:25

I just think they will not stay there for too long without playing. Australia can't be discounted just yet as they have shown with 5 out of 5 wins during Australian summer so far, they will catch up pretty quickly with a Non-playing India. India really need to play more.

what you talking bout man... you don't need to play games to make points... its the win lose ratio that matters... so a leading team that doesn't play teams is actually difficult to catch up with...

Ofcourse India will not be a "long term" Number 1, you have to play test matches to stay there. If BCCI had all the say, India will stop playing test matches altogether.

what he means is not that India does not deserve to be the called the 'Best Team'... for now...

So he has nothing against India being called the No.1 Team

but rather that India right now is not a 'Great Team'

Which is what he means India can't be a 'Long Term' No.1

So the operative word here in 'Long Term'

That being said... why does he say...

"but their success would have tasted much better had they beaten them while they were still a major force in international cricket."

HELLO!! What about Eden Gardens ??

He talks bout "Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne, Justin Langer and later Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist"

well... how about all of them AND the Waugh brothers getting whupped in 2001?

Australia may have dominated the world cricket scene but they NEVER dominated India...

Check out these stats of India vs. Australia in Tests since 2000...

http://stats.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=1;opposition=2;result=1;result=2;result=3;result=4;spanmin1=1+Jan+2000;spanval1=span;team=6;template=results;type=team;view=results

India and Australia have played 20 test matches

And honours are even with seven wins each and six draws...

So Chappell got it wrong when he says

"I would have thought it was a greater achievement if they had caught up with Australia while Australia was still very much a great side, rather than waiting for Australia to come back to the field," Chappell said. "That to me has been the disappointing thing. It seems to me that the other teams have almost thrown their hands and said that 'it's hard to beat them, we will just wait for them to fall back and then we will catch them'."

That's just no good... the numbers don't stand by what he has to say...

By Victory_278692• 12 Jan 2010 13:17

Australia, how to retain the top spot for long, by delivering the performance consistently in all the three departments.....

India's fielding and bowling needs major concerns. Its possible but difficult, need good coaches and proper strategy.......players in rotation in form for out form.

This is healthy competition with Aussies & South Africa.

By verisimilitude• 12 Jan 2010 12:30
verisimilitude

Has he forgotten the hiding they got in India while the 'great' Australian team was at their summit?

http://www.cricinfo.com/india/content/current/story/443658.html

"I don't rate India a long-term No.1" - Ian Chappell

Former Australian captain and leading commentator Ian Chappell has said India don't have the resources to retain their No.1 spot in the ICC Test rankings for a long enough period to emulate Australia and the great West Indies teams of the past. Chappell said that India's batting alone will not sustain them and to do so, they will have to unearth a couple of champion bowlers.

Chappell and former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar aired their views in Time Out, Cricinfo's new fortnightly audio show hosted by the leading commentator Harsha Bhogle. India bagged the top ranking from Australia after beating Sri Lanka 2-0 in the three-Test series at home last month. India jumped from No. 3 to No.1 for first time since the rankings came into place in May 2001.

Manjrekar said a big reason for India's success is the arrival of a strong opening pair in Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, and the ability to adjust to foreign conditions.

"It's a huge asset to have, a stable opening pair. I noticed a change in India's batting around the time Sourav Ganguly was leading India, John Wright was in charge, and I saw India playing on foreign pitches," Manjrekar said. "I found that the new generation of Indian batsmen could play the pull shot, the cut shot, and they were pretty good against the short deliveries."

However, Chappell felt that India have completed only half the job of being a well-rounded team.

"I don't think great teams are built on opening batting partnerships. But to me, there is a far more important thing, and this is one reason why I don't rate India as a long-term No.1, " Chappell said. "I think you have got to have two champion bowlers in your line-up to be a long-term successful cricket team. That is where India is falling down at the moment.

"When I look at the averages and the strike-rates for India in the last 12 months, I don't see two champion bowlers. In fact, I am struggling to find one champion bowler in that line-up. They've got some good bowlers. Sure, they have got a very good batting line-up, but the bowling is really not good enough to see them win consistently all around the world."

Over the last two years, India have played 20 Tests, winning nine and losing three. Three of those wins have come against Australia, including one in Perth during their last tour in 2007-08. Chappell acknowledged that India had performed above themselves in the last two tours of Australia, but their success would have tasted much better had they beaten them while they were still a major force in international cricket.

Since the collective retirement of their champion players like Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne, Justin Langer and later Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist, Australia haven't produced the same level of consistency in results.

CSA agree to 'compressed' tour of India

South Africa have agreed to a compressed schedule for the tour of India, comprising two Tests and three ODIs in February next year, if the BCCI is able to assure them that the travel and logistics between venues aren't taxing. According to the dates sent by the Indian board to Cricket South Africa (CSA), the series commences with the first Test from February 4-8 and the second Test between February 12-16; the three ODIs will be played on February 19, 22 and 25. The BCCI will need to send back the final schedule, with the venues, for CSA's ratification.

CSA has in fact, informed the South African Cricketers' Association (SACA) of the schedule sent by the BCCI as well. "We are actually compressing the tour a little bit more than we normally would," Tony Irish, SACA's chief, told Cricinfo. "There has been a process of consultation between SACA and CSA on the schedule and though it doesn't comply strictly with the guidelines, we are happy to compromise in order to ensure that Test matches and ODIs are played."

However, he said CSA was happy to go ahead with the BCCI's proposal. "At the moment there is probably a day's less break between the ODIs and we would've liked to see two more days of break between the Test matches."

The only condition CSA have set is for the minimum possible travel time between the matches for the team. "We are prepared to go ahead if the logistics are okay," Irish said. "The day of travel between the matches should not be too long as we have only two rest and practice days. But if we are travelling between one end to other then we will need an extra day of rest."

The standard ICC guidelines for the break days between the Tests and ODIs are not clear and a glance at the prominent series played in 2009 confirms that fact. The Ashes had breaks ranging from three days to 10 days, the recently concluded three-Test series between India and Sri Lanka had a three-day gap between the first two matches and an extra day before the final Test, while in the ongoing Basil D'Oliveira Trophy between South Africa and England, the minimum break is of five days.

However, South Africa's tour of India is an extraordinary case because India want two Tests and three ODIs instead of the originally listed five-match ODI series under the ICC's Future Tours Programme (FTP).

With India becoming the No.1 Test team after their series victory against Sri Lanka, pressure was mounting on the BCCI administrators who had blindly scheduled a multitude of ODIs but only seven Test matches in 2010 which included the yet-to-be finalised two Test series in Zimbabwe.

Second-placed South Africa though, agreed to co-operate because they were eager to play more Tests, having played only six Tests this year, including the ongoing Boxing Day Test against England in Durban.

at the end of the day are honest enuff to speak out against their own. There is one cross section who if they don't like what they see are not afraid to point their fingers on one of their own. Its all a part of the spirit of cricket and sportsmanship...

Indians though tend to be slightly partial. Although I've felt that we've been victimized on several occassions... mostly the default response is for everyone to defend our players when something goes wrong. Except maybe the extreme Bhajji episode where he crossed reasonable limits...

Mark Taylor: "As a captain, you have to make an honest appraisal of whether your players are close to crossing the line" © Getty Images

Mark Taylor believes Ricky Ponting has to do more to stop Australia's on-field exchanges escalating into significant incidents and has called for all players to follow the spirit of cricket. In the final two Tests against West Indies the hosts had four players reported, with Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson and Shane Watson fined for their indiscretions.

The spate of incidents has led to the "ugly Aussies" tag being dusted off and Taylor, a former Test leader, said it was important for a captain to know when the players were close to crossing the line. "I just think the Australians could be a bit more pro-active in trying to nip these things in the bud, rather than letting things escalate," Taylor said in the Sunday Herald Sun. "To be fair to Ricky, it's not always easy.

"It can be hard to control a situation if you're not out in the middle and two of your batsmen are in the heat of battle. But as a captain, you have to make an honest appraisal of whether your players are close to crossing the line."

Taylor, a Cricket Australia director, said as captain it was important to "think a bit from the opposition's point of view - not just your own". "We saw a couple of incidents in Perth and they weren't great," Taylor said. "The Watson appeal I just thought was a bad look for the game. It was embarrassing for all concerned.

"Sometimes there can be a decision where someone feels robbed and it can escalate pretty quickly, but that's where, as a cricketer, you need to keep your head and accept there are ways in which you can't react. It's incumbent upon all sides to play within the spirit of cricket."

Watson was fined for his excessive celebration after dismissing Chris Gayle in Perth while Haddin and Johnson also received small penalties for their involvement in a lengthy exchange with Sulieman Benn, who was suspended for two ODIs. Doug Bollinger escaped with a reprimand in the second Test in Adelaide.

India's captain MS Dhoni is confident that his side can hold on to the No. 1 spot in Tests for a long time, even though they are scheduled to play only two Tests - against Bangladesh in January - in the next 11 months.

A proposal to include two Tests during South Africa's visit in February is under consideration by the two boards, and India are also slated to host New Zealand in October next year for a three-Test series according to the Future Tours Programme (FTP), which has been widely criticised by some teams for the disparity in series distribution.

Dhoni though, was confident that they will play more than four Test matches next year. "Quite a few Test matches are proposed and I don't think that we will play only four Tests next year. We will play more than that."

India beat Sri Lanka by an innings and 24 runs in the third Test in Mumbai earlier this month, thereby winning the three-Test series 2-0 and jumping from No. 3 to No.1 on the Test ladder for first time since the rankings came into place in May 2001.

On receiving the Test Championship mace from ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat in Delhi, Dhoni said, "It is a special feeling to receive this mace. I am taking this on behalf of the team and the BCCI. Being an Indian, it is a proud moment. We have really worked hard as a team in the last 14 months to get to this position. We want to remain here longer and everything depends on our performance."

"I'm proud to be leading a team that has displayed a penchant for translating potential into performance. Our ascent to No. 1 commenced several years ago. The efforts put in by our seniors in making the Indian cricket team a force to be reckoned with, will never be forgotten. They inspired us to follow in their footsteps.

"Our priority in the months to follow will be to prove that we are as capable of staying at the top as we are at reaching it."

Lorgat said he would be happy if the South African and Indian Cricket Boards can work out on having the two Tests in February. "Under the FTP, two countries will have to work out their bilateral series in four or six years time," he said. "It is up to them when to visit each other considering their interest. I would be happy if the proposal for inclusion of the two Tests in February is through. India deserved to be a Test No. 1 side."

For me the 'turning point' of the series was the match at Cuttack... when Sri Lanka was off to a flyer and then Jadeja dismissed a settled Tharanga with an incredible delivery in his very first over...

It was funny watching Tharanga looking so confused... he couldn't believe he was bowled... can't blame him

Even the umpires couldn't believe he was bowled!! they had to refer to the third umpire to make sure :-)

Sri Lanka who looked on course for another 300+ score capitulated rapidly and Tendulkar nailed the coffin with a finely composed innings... beautiful...

the duel he had with Ponting was really something...

but I think the present crop of Indian pacers have chinks in their armour when it comes to one days or T20s

cos they don't vary their lengths and pace too well...

you don't see too many toe crushing yorkers, rib crunching bouncers or deceiving slower balls...

I think that's what Dhoni meant when he kept saying we have to work on our death bowling... and that seems to be happening now... I think Zaheer was bowling yorkers pretty consistently in the past ODI series in the final overs...

what the Indian team is missing is a genuine all rounder and a pace bowler who can strike fear in the hearts of batsmen... at one time Irfan was shaping up to be the all rounder and he kinda got lost... lots of batsmen who can bowl so we are able to brush the lack of the all rounder under the carpet... But Ravindra Jadeja looks promising...

As for the fast bowler who strikes fear... we can wait until India and Pakistan unite for that to happen...

By Arien• 26 Dec 2009 08:22

Ya you have a point there. The ODI scoring is skyrocketing.. 300 plus is becoming common, which kills the bowlers.

But wht I still dont understand is,the talents we had like , Irfan , Ishant..etc who came in to the seen storming is seen dieing later. They are failing to maintain their performance levels. Are they getting carried away with money n fame!!

that is shocking...

but I have a theory...

the average score of matches played in the subcontinent is probably higher than of those matches played outside... mostly batting pitches and scores often go 300+

Considering that Indian players play half their matches on these pitches which favour higher scores, it is only natural that Indian batsmen would tend to have higher averages and Indian bowlers would have low averages...

And it is true... most Indian batsmen have pretty good batting averages compared to other team... as well, the batsmen tend to have higher averages at home than they do abroad except for Yuvraj I think probably cos of his problem with spin... and like you illustrated, the bowling figures are embarassing...

But thats just one factor, the main reason why Indian pace bowler averages are poor is cos they are pretty ordinary...

Its a tall theory... baked in an idle mind during test match lunch breaks :-D

Yes,The issue was lack of bowlers , no keeper who can bat, no allrounders.. which use to be a pain n the AA.

6batsmen 1keeper 4bowlwer .. and oponents were waiting for the 5th parttime bowler to come to bowl to capitalise. lol

Dhoni's entry.. improved pacers..thaks to MRF foundation and Sir.D.Lilly... We are there now. :)

And remember earlier (late 90s, early 2000s) when we had to chase and hunt down targets even in the 250s, the batsmen used to play it safe till the last 10 overs from where they would need to score at 10 an over types if they wanted to win!

Every match they won those days were matches that went down to the wire

Now the team and the way they play looks so different... they can seal it as early as in the 40th over in the match even while chasing 300+

Its not just the team, the game itself has changed, but the transformation of the Indian team is still unbelievable...

Verisi.. nice inputs man. Team looks solid, like you said even without dhoni and Yuvi, sehwag and Sachin gettin out in the opening spell itself.. still we cud chase 315 with just another wicket,,wow un believable.

Gambhir becoming consistent and promising.. proud of you dude!!

check out this predictor tool

http://icc-cricket.yahoo.net/match_zone/test_predictor.php

I predicted India would win all both its matches against Bangladesh (fair assumption) and that South Africa and Australia would win all the forthcoming matches

According to this predictor, India would zoom ahead 7 points while SA and Aus are just going to make a measly 2 points at max... don't ask me how it works

But I do know that the way the Test ranking works, teams don't accumulate points by just winning matches... its more dependent on your win ratio and who you win against rather than the number of matches you win...

So if India zooms to the 131 points, they are almost unassailable from a points perspective for a good time to come, that can't be bad...

However, not playing tests in general when you are atop the ranking and the team is playing so well is criminal

We are being denied the final stages of illustrious players such as Dravid, Tendulkar and Laxman... 11 months considering the stage of the careers they are in is gold dust...

And the younger players are also losing the chance to gain the experience to step in to those shoes

But still... it is not for certain that India WILL only play two matches... these are very dynamic things and BCCI have shown the right intent by trying to sign up SA for the Test series so there is hope...

Kohli looking good... Sehwag and Tendulkar out early and team playing without Dhoni and Yuvraj...

But Sangakkara handed the match to India even before the game started by deciding to bat first...

Lion - Its not just the consistency. the schedule is the issue. BCCI makes much more on ODIs and T20s and those idiots always schedules according to that

2010 Calendar just has 2 tests scheduled as of now, now they realised and trying to get SA play couple of tests. Lets see

India is No2 in ODI ranking too. :)

BAD... and that stumping off Sangakkara was not too convincing either

and running in to Tendulkar... what was he trying to do? What if someone got injured? What if Sachin got injured!

If he did that to Bhajji, he would have needed the helmet to save his teeth...

Just makes you appreciate Dhoni that much more...

Karthik did a blunder missing that runout..Oops bloody hell, they were going at a rate more than 10 an over that time!!!

BTW... Jadeja's ball that dismissed Tharanga... BEAUUUUUUTTTTTY!!!

Bhajji's spell was unsung, he was the first to stem the tide and brought down the run rate before Jadeja was brought on and that built the pressure

Ishant Sharma's comeback was nice... lot to like in that game...

IMHO,rankings should be based on just the total games played....and not differentiated on the basis of grounds or against which teams and things like that.those will just be stats.but only one ranking!

(wonder why everybody is having a problem in seeing India at the top for once....sheesh!talk of insecurity, man!this is unbelievable!) Jai Hind! :-) )

Exile - The pitches in the subcontinent have changed from dust to bouncy ones since long. The pace bowlers will have an edge on those green picthes, which benefits both the teams. India have won test series abroad consistantly offlate.

India in Zimbabwe 2006 won 2-0

Indian in Australia Won 2-1

India in Pak 2006 won 1-0

India in windies 2006 won 1-0

India in Bangladesh 2007 won 1-0

svelte the make up of the pitches varies, for instance a rain soaked green pitch in England is very different to a dust bowl in India!!! This then effects how the ball reacts and the type of bowlers used. England traditionally produces a lot more seam bowlers and India spinners due to this fact.

Its a shame that India doesn't play test cricket and the ranking system really needs to be looked at. When was the last time India played a series against New Zealand for instance? I think more points should be awarded for test wins away from home than at home grounds. For all test nations being at home is a huge advantage and probably even more so for the Indian Subcontinent teams.

Also the Indian cricket board is doing its best to kill test cricket as it makes more money from other forms of the game and that is a real shame....

I hope England beat South Africa in the test series so India can remain at the top for longer... actually, England just has to win one of the three matches and that would be enuff to keep India on top... I think...

It would be an added bonus if the Kiwis torture the Kangaroos...

NEW DELHI: President Pratibha Patil, on Sunday, congratulated the Indian team for becoming the world's number one Test side after beating Sri Lanka

by an innings and 24 runs in the third and final Test in Mumbai.

"It is well deserved and reflects the depth of talent of our cricketers," Patil said in her compliments to the team members.

India clinched the three-match series by a 2-0 margin. The triumph took Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men to the top of the International Cricket Council's world rankings.
