Sugar

What are the disadvantages of high sugar in pregnancy. One of the nurses told me that it will increase the size of the baby which would create problem during delivery. Is there any other lady who is following any diet chart in this situation. I checked with the doctor but the only things she says is cut sugar.

hi!u cud start ur diet regimen by cutting down ur carbohydrate rich foods, bec d end product of carbohydrate digestion is sugar.too much sugar in d bloodstream will result to diabetes bec ur pregnant it is so called gestational diabetes.wat u nid 2 eat more are protein rich foods bec it has many amino acids which are very essential for life esp 4 d growing baby.add to ur diet vitamins & minerals rich foods.do not rely too much on supplements,go with d natural ones!gud luck to you & to your baby!take care!

Taliesin, they do that btw every three weeks, appt in Health center.

Azilana, I was thinking of going to private but then heard so many stupid cases which ended up in emergency in HMC, so thought of sticking to Muntaza Health Centre + HMC only.

for giiving birth to a healthy baby boy last Saturday (DID ANYONE READ HER POST???)

2nd...I'm sorry to know all this happened to you consciouseffort. At your stage, you shouldn't be stressed at all. Maybe there was a LANGUAGE BARRIER or something between you and the hospital staff (laboratory, reception and the assistant) coz that is usually what happens.

If your attending physicians are giving you a hard time now that you're still pregnant, I don't know what would be your dilemna when you're already in the delivery room (Heaven forbids it).

Maybe you should try a different doctor from another hospital. Might as well, talk to the (new)doctor and tell him what happened to you and what are your concerns.

My opinion...

Just a side note - if you do have sudden weight gain or any sudden swelling, make sure they check your blood pressure and urine more frequently as well.

I have what they call pregnancy sugar and they made me follow a diet and follow up with a dietitian.

I wounder why they've didn't do it for you.

because it isn't only having big over sized baby.

diabetes may stick with you even after pregnancy and/or have it every time you are pregnant.

it is not only cutting sugar, but not much of carbs such as bread, pasta, rice.

minimal usage of oil and if use Olive oil, no more than 3 tsp

only grilled or steamed food (meat, chicken, fish) in small quantities. 5-6 meals a day. 3 of them major (breakfast, lunch & dinner) and 2-3 snacks.

try to eat every 2-3 hours. have a lot of veges, saute or salad.

I had to use insulin shots, because my blood sugar was on border & won't decrease. specially that it runs in my family and I am overweight.

even i had gestational diabetes in my last trimester confirmed after doing Glucose tolerance test. i was advised to take low sugar diet whereas my cousin was injected insulin daily. well it depends upon the value .. if you have high blood sugar u need to b on insulin otherwise a strict sugar free diet would help ... i was asked to use whole wheat bread, green apple etc .. cut down bananas, pastries, chocolates etc. avoid starchy foods.

Wow I feel for you, they've really not been very kind or informative to you, I would look for another doctor.

I don't know much about being pregnant or having babies, but your 4kg increase in 4 days will most likely not be due to putting on fat, or excess sugar. It will be a combination of fluid retention, and the fact that your baby is growing and getting heavier. Fluid retention is when your body starts holding onto water. It happens to a lot of women during pregnancy, so looks like they have gained a lot of weight, when really they are just storing water.

Hmmn ... I have asked them to give me some kind of diet chart but they do not have any which is funny in general & unfortunate in my incident. Sunday I went for another blood sugar test in which I was asked to consume 100ml of glucose after 8 hours fast & they took blood test four times after each 1 hour (4 times in total), later on I went back to my office & received a call from the hospital to see the doctor again in the evening as I have even higher blood sugar than previous test. Funny thing was when I went there I requested reception to put my glucose test report in my file as I have been called to see regarding that (you always have to remind them as a patient otherwise your papers would be messed up) after 1 hour my turn came, & the doctor said no report in ur file, go & check with Head Nurse. It looks bad that an Assistant is sitting with you & instead of asking the assistant, doctor asks the patient to go & find the reports yourself. I felt bad but I went because I wanted to know the results, Head nurse was another joker instead of finding my report she started giving me out the procedures, when I told her I have gone thru all the procedures now the dr is waiting for my report to refer me to HMC then she was very rude & said we dont have any you can go & check the reception or lab. I went to Lab they said they give out all reports to the reception immediately after making reports. I was very patient till then, tried to control my anger & when I went to reception, the lady told me to check again with Nurse & Lab WITHOUT CHECKING HER PAPERS! I lost my temper by then & told her to check her file first & told her that I am already coming from all these departments & I am very sick plus pregnant so pls dont try to play with me. When I gave her a hard time, she started looking for papers over there & then later on spoke to the doctor who refered me to find out my reports myself. Reception told me to go back to the doctor she wants to speak to you. I went again, she started getting rude to me that I already told you on Thursday that you have high sugar so what you want to know, I felt crazy by then & said my dear my bad luck that I saw u on Thursday & you were the one who refered me to do another 4 hours glucose test today. I did that & until now my both the arms are paining & now instead of getting my reports you cant be rude with me, all this time there was a nurse standing by, doctor asked her to find my GTT reports so that she can see me & we both went out by then. The nurse was busy first with some patient & later on when I reminded her that you need to check out my reports she went to lab & found it out there. And guess what, she asked did really someone called you to see the doctor I said yes, then she replied you have four reports out of which 1,3 & 4 are normal & 2 is high so for this generally they dont call patients. I was really pissed off, & said my dear I finished my job at 5, came directly to this place & now its 7 when you find out my reports & say to me that I dont have sugar, do you think this is a picnic spot where I like to visit day & night in this pregnancy state or is there any one so beautiful whose one sight I have come to see. She understood where I was getting, took me back to the doctor with her & the doctor's face was :( like this because now she had no right to be rude with me & when I asked her finally you got my reports? Now what, you ppl are wasting my time in this state, so what is the solution for this now then she explained to me that 1 of your report shows high blood sugar other 3 are normal, which shows you would be prone to sugar so do not get your weight increase & try to cut carbohydrates & sugar from your diet, I asked her for any specific chart but she was unable to give anything in writing which is very sick.

Monday I had another lab plus allergy test in HMC & there i found out that withing 4 days I got my weight increased 1kg every day & from 69 it is 72 now. This is really crazy. I dont understand why the doctors are not giving me proper treatment, why they cannot give me in writing what do I have to do to decrease this weight, I try to do a lot of walking but that is not helping at all & I do not consume sugar directly. I just feel sick with all this incompetent behaviour & negligence. My next appt in HMC would be on 3rd May where I hope she tells me about a proper treatment to fix this problem.

Speaking of fruits, keep in mind the sugar content of juices that you drink. There are natural and artificial sugars in many juice drinks. ;)

Take care.

I had gestational diabetes in late pregnancy too, I was advised to watch sugar intake and although I wasn't eating cakes etc, I was eating a lot of fruit and was advised to cut down, so remember certain fruits are full of sugar so check out the nutritional content of any fruit you are eating on a daily basis.

CAN be controlled by diet. Follow your doctors suggestions and cut all sugar from your diet. I had this condition with my first child. Never had it again with my subsequent pregnancies. 20 years later and now my father has been diagnosed with diabetes. So I did not have any idea it was in my family back then, but obviously it was.

Oh this is another serious thing now. What I dont understand is that I dont have any family history of sugar from my side but from my husband side its very strong. Second thing is I am a salt taker & I was afraid I might get blood pressure but instead this sugar? THis is what I am not getting that from where did I get this.

I'm surprised that the doctor didn't put you on insulin injections. Having high blood sugar during pregnancy is a serious thing. If it is not controlled by insulin injections your baby could have birth defects. Better read more about it and ask your doctor again.
