Strict shisha rules in Souq Waqif

Strict shisha rules in Souq Waqif

whykaykay
By whykaykay

Shisha smoking is no longer allowed inside restaurants ad cafes at Souq Waqif and 50% of the seats outdoors should be reserved for non smokers, and the remaining 50% will be for smokers.

These new regulations were issued in a letter sent from the souq's management within the last 2 weeks. A penalty of losing their license for a period of 3 months will be implemented on those who do not follow the rules.

Smoking indoors in Qatar is already illegal, with fines ranging from QR 200-QR 500.

Went to collect my Medicine from the Pharmacy yesterday, The Lady at the counter gave me a leaflet about the dangers of Shisha, which stated that a session of shisha was like smoking 100 cigerettes. Well if it is that bad why dont they just ban the damn hubbly bubbly!

Translator, why only shisha? then why not smoking in general? what's the difference? I am for restricting smoking under the roof (like in my country). However, smoking on the open air is still legal in the world.. speaking of healthy lifestyle, why not to ban chickens full of antibiotics, fish full of toxins, vegetables full of pesticides?? Cars with their exhaust gases? Any type of production and manufacturing in the world, as all this is polluting the atmosphere? Yallah, let us go back to mother-nature...

A very small step in the right direction. Shisha banned completely in public places would be correct, yet overdue, decision.

Here's a scenario - a restaurant has 20 tables. There are 10 for sheesha, and 10 where sheesha isn't allowed.

All 10 sheesha tables are busy, and let's say 5 of the non-sheesha tables are free. A regular sheesha smoker marches in and demands to sit at the empty non-sheesha table and smoke his favorite grape sheesha.

Do you really think that the wait staff will say to him that he can't sit at that table and smoke sheesha?

This is just as ridiculous as the "laws" which are supposed to stop people from smoking cigarettes inside malls. Works well in theory but will fail miserably in practice.

Then you might wanna check why you of all people get rejected...to see why ur rubbin off on ppl the wrong way...I work in a field FULLLLLLL of single Asian expats...every single person I work with has been known to go to the malls on family days with no issues and they r all quite fond of the national day parade in particular!!! As a matter of fact I have run into quite a number of them AT the national day parade and AT shisha places in Souq Waqif....but maybe...JUST MAYBE...they look like presentable and professional enough for those venues...I've heard of the motto "no shirt no shoes no service" and I think many ppl who get rejected, full into some similar screening, but rather than telling ppl bluntly, some places choose to mask it under "family day"

sorry for the harsh words amigo, but I can't take anyone's words over my own observation.

yagnamecarg: With you on this. I never go to Souq Waqif for this reason can't stand tobacco. Also, other restaurants or cafe's which allows smoking inside with laughable splitters. This is the God damn 21st century and still ppl are talking about smoking inside.

For us normal human beings we have a right to live without being intoxicated by smokers. If you like that I'd trade you Egypt.

HGL: I suggest that both you and Supercool go together to Souq Waqif and share a Shisha.

@SC...neither based on scientific facts nor on statistics but yes based on my own experience. Almost 5 years in Qatar, yet to be able to witness National Day Parade/ events being an aisan single while a white/ non asian single guy can. Same goes for Friday Family Day at the malls. And I would never attempt to bash Qatar for anything and if I am seen coming close to that it must ALWAYS be taken as airing my discomfort while accepting the fact "your country, your rules" with which I am fine with. Hope you see the difference in implementation of rules based on where one comes from.

Thanks for the scientific facts that u have enlightened us with....it is quite amazing how u have proven ur point both statistically and with first hard testimony of eye witnesses.

and they ask why we think some expats just like to bash Qatar!!!! GROW UP WILL YA!!!!

HGL,, I like your "Mystery" way analyzing the things

But I don't thing that was the case

Maybe they are just going more healthy !

I am not feeling bad or sad, because I am not into shisha, so Ban it ban it yes yes yes :O)

Looks like some Asians were seen smoking or were also enjoying a smoke alongside the preferential non asian customers and some non asian customers found it uncomfortable them being around. In all probability this is meant for asians and would be applicable for them only in the sense if they want to smoke they would not be allowed inside while others can.

I think I must clarify something

- Smoking inside restaurants was already banned, but since a few places started violating that rule, this is to re-enforce a rule that is already in place.

- Excluded from that rule are all terraces and areas that do not have a hard top...i.e. most second floors as well.

The part with the 50-50, I guess fair is fair altho I really don't see the point like Brit said.

the problem with all these rules? strict implementation!

The segregation makes no difference because there is the danger of secondary smoking. Either ban it all together or leave it as is.

Why should the government interfere in whether the cafes allow indoor shisha or not? if the customer does not like the smoke from the Shisha, he should not come in the first place! there are plenty of places where he can go. Really does not make any sense...

Why are they only strict in Souq Waqif? There are so many smokers inside the mall specially in cafe's. Even though there are big stickers of No Smoking logo, they are just ignoring it and they are just keep on smoking. I don't want to be specific on who they are but I know most of us knows who they are.
