Strategy to ease traffic in Doha

Key points of this plan are:

- extra traffic patrols at all the main intersections and roundabouts
- motorists advised to NOT block roads in case of minor road accidents
- parents should start for school as early as possible to avoid traffic
- “traffic village” and road education for school kids

What do you think about this?

-----------------------------------

The Ministry of Interior has announced a comprehensive plan to ensure smooth traffic flow when the new school year begins in Qatar next week.

“The Traffic Department has a plan to ease circulation on all roads of Doha, especially those where construction work is on, in co-ordination with the Rescue Police (Al Fazaa) and Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya),” said Capt Ali al-Baridi, head of the traffic movement at the department.

“All such areas will be covered by traffic patrols with special focus on key intersections and roundabouts,” al-Baridi said.

There would be more than 60 traffic patrols from the department along with those from Lekhwiya and Al Fazaa.

The traffic plan would cover the parking areas of schools to ensure the safe movement of students and their parents, he added.

Al-Baridi reiterated that motorists should not block roads in case of minor road accidents.

“They should move the vehicles to the side of the road and go to the nearest police station together.”

He urged all road users to co-operate with police personnel and abide by traffic regulations.

“Parents should start for school as early as possible to avoid any potential congestion, which usually causes them stress that leads to road accidents.”

Lieut Abdulwahid Gharib al-Anzi, awareness officer, said the department had adopted an intensive programme to spread traffic awareness among students with the beginning of the new school year.

The programmes target students at all school levels and encourage them to abide by rules meant for road users.

Further, the department intends to launch a “traffic village” at its headquarters in the new school year.

It will include miniature roads to instruct children on the principles of driving in a practical and safe manner.

Introduce 15,000 buses along with the Metro and stop renewing petrol/Diesel car permits and sale...

Let the expats switch to Electric cars.... that could be used as an excuse to "green-ify Qatar"... It will also save Qatar tons of Petrol to sell to other countries.

To enable the switch the Govt can easily provide 0% interest loan. Such cars will also not need yearly testing... maybe every 2 or 3 yrs.

Obeying all the rules of the road and respecting the other's right of use of the road are very essential.

- companies should encourage people to pool cars, by giving an additional day off (every month?) to all those who are using pool cars. This will certainly reduce the number of cars by more than half !

- insist on school buses for all students in all schools (at least for the time where the roads are being repaired). Any student not using a school bus should pay a premium fee! this will reduce the congestion on roads considerably.

No R/As please.

Reduce fares in buses or I think you can even make it free and increase the taxi charges.

- strict implementation of drivers adhering to lanes. There should be big sign boards at least 750 meters ahead of any junction/RA showing dedicated lanes for each direction/exit (for example, lane one to turn right, lane two to go straight, etc.). There should be a number of policemen making sure that the drivers stick to their lane (no mercy - if you are in the wrong lane, then you exit accordingly - yet no lane changes allowed until exit)

- the contractor who is improving the road/junction should be fully responsible to plan and implement uninterrupted traffic flow at all times during the construction. He should plan the methods and get it approved from authorities before starting any work on site.
