Strange Coincidence !

Yesterday I went for a wander round one of the chief malls in Doha..

Stopped off in one shop. Likes an item priced at 70QR.. went to pay and the salesperson said 90QR.. I mentioned that the sticker said 70QR and teh salesperson apologised and took the correct money.

Being of a sweet tooth, I then stopped off at a cake shop and bought two small pastries at 7 QR each.. Got to the counter and the salesperson asked for 17QR. Again I querried the price and was told that i was right and teh salesperson apologized.

To cut a long story short.. is this just a coincidence or were they trying to pull a fast one ???

A similar thing happened with me at Morroc, when i arrived, i caught a "petit taxi" to take me to the Hotel, the cab driver asked me to pay 100 dirhams, next day i found out that should have paid a max of 30 dirhams, another day when i went with my gf to Portuguese embassy the cab driver collected too much but we only noticed it when we went from embassy to Rabat's zoo (Only place we could be alone and kiss each other.....ahhhhh.....memories ;) )

I guess paying by Card regularly is a good option, since there is a less possibility of cheating by the salesperson.

SOmetimes they reduce the items and dont change the codes on the register to reflect that.

Also maybe some dont know how to count. I dont think its deliberate but it does happen frequently and perhaps its worth checking from now on Brit.

because we should! It happens most of the times on "sale" items.

my personal opinion, if it was the other way around, i'd still call their attention,..honestly, sometimes some cashiers tend to give me more change than what i was supposed to get, i always make it a point to tell them that and return the excess change...

if they told you a price lower than what is in the tag, will you call their attention?

Bahraini, if there are only few items, you can check immediately, but if it involves, say, 20 or more items, well, just keep the receipt and check at home. If you find disparity, you can always complain (now, whether the management act on your complain or not, that's another discussion or thread you can start).

Now that has become a usual practice here.. Because people dont care about the money.. sometimes we dont even count the balance we have got from POS.

Guess those guys were trying their luck with brit, someone else would've paid the money they asked. We knw brit is smart fella. Lol :P

I found a much better option in one of te shops.. Instead of giving change (25, 50, 75 coins), they just donate the money to charity on your behalf, which shows up on the receipt.

i wuz suggesting to my dad the other day that we shud carry some candies in our pockets to offer as change in shops.well,if they can give us candies instead of change, why can't we use candies as currency too?whatsay?

I personaly think its a ploy.. Usually, i don't count the change given, but perhaps I should start doing that also now..

marketing strategy? Doha is full of surprising marketing strategies, you know... remember the 50 dirhams change? what about the minimun charge per head policy in some restos even if you just sit and didnt order anything? and this one... anything else to add?

if it was an honest mistake, fine.. but shouldn't they have learned from their mistake the first time and not do it again? oh no, if it happens more than once, they're just ripping us off!

On two or three occasions i also realised that the price on the sticker was different from that which they were charging, this happened in one of the big supermarket. They said it was entered wrongly in the computer or the tag was wrongly. Either they're taking more money or making us buy something thinking it is cheaper.

Its happening in many stores.. either they give you wrong balance or ask for more money...if you clarify them ...they will say sorry..Sometimes if we are in hurry we won’t notice it. We should be more alert and careful while paying the bill.

Paying tips is a different story..…if they are trying to fool you..its not acceptable.
