Would like to thank everyone for their views & tips on stopping bottle feeding...as many of them said I think i will start gradually with sippy cups to glass.

I second you Wild Child!!! And it's true Swissgirl, from the age of as young as an year a child should eat a normal food that everybody else is eating at home. Also bottle feeding is such a headache. A lot of hygene should be maintained. Cleaning the bottles, boiling the bottles is especially becomes unmanageable when you are travelling.

(Qatari, please add that spell-check at once ......lol)

any solution that involves a baby crying for several weeks to adapt is wrong IMHO, and to simply dismiss this as a parent being "afraid of upsetting the baby" is pretty naive.

i agree with distracting them, trying this and that, trying to make him full on something aside from the bottle, etc.  but it needs to be gradual.

we seem to partly agree at least (or maybe even mostly agree).  i'm just not a fan of the "cry it out" approach.  you can impose discipline without having your baby cry it out.

have a good day.

theres no"snatching away"done,is there./ anyone knows tht wht taking the bottle away means is tht u will be substituting another food for the bottle, and we do tht b4 the baby gets really hungry and wants the bottle...then once the babys tum is full, all thts left to do is play and talk the baby into sleep ..geez, its not as tough and mean as it sounds...wht ive found over the years is tht moms and dads are mostly just afraid of upsetting the baby..an we all know tht it doesnt take tht much to distract kids, does it?In all this, i hope almaz.. has got the info she wanted.

Alma, u could try to feed ur baby with a spoon sometimes. But don't try to stop the bottle at once though...

the way it worked for me: try to make it fun. there r so many colourful things available for kids (spoons, plates, etc.)

leave ur baby sometimes with something sweet on the plate and give him/her the spoon. just for fun (they have special curved spoons for kids-try those).

try to show ur baby that other kids eat in this way, too.

and...don't stress urself with this too much. ur baby is still young

Good luck!

(doctors say to start introducing food at 6 months) but that doesn't mean you snatch the bottle away and go for the weeks of crying as you suggest above.

finally, someone who thinks tht 20 months...is enuf time to have gotten used to the big bad world....a toddler shd be eating tons of stuff by the time he/she is a year and a half..wake up, swissgirl!!Breast-feeding till 3 is fine, but all nutrition is over i the breat-milk by arnd nine months..after tht, its just comfort..for mom and baby..

it's gotta be gradual.

pwb's plan sounds like it's worth a shot.  my little girl is 3 weeks old, so let me know how it goes so i can know what worked.

could be worse though - my nephew is almost 12 months and he hates the bottle.  it's the breast of sippy cup for him, which means my sister has to be with him all the time when he feeds since he still drops things non stop.

If a 20 month old is still only getting milk for nutrition, something is wrong. A bottle as a supplement or as a drink is one thing, but a toddler should be eating pretty much everything within reason.

not scary, just stating it like it is...the gentle part comes in when u deal with the baby -- playing with him till he is exhausted and happy and just drops off, forgetting the bottle...after all, its just a habit, not a life-source..forgive me if i am coming off as mean,i hvnt had my fix ---of cofee--- as yet.

I would start with substituting sippy cups during the day and make the before-bed-bottle the last thing you try getting rid of. A little apple juice -water mix during the day might make him more interested in the cup. Even milk with a splash of chocolate milk can help.  At bedtime, start reading a short book to him with the bottle and you can hopefully phase the bottle out and keep going with the book. When you are ready to drop the night time bottle, you just have to do it and don't look back. Good luck!

kids r really resilient and adapt so well to changes, they can go straight to glasses, with help..it cancels out the worry (something i cd. never shake off)of contamination of all the rubber lids and all...nah, 20 months...is just for the convinience of the parents,to stick with it for so long

You sound like one scary mama!

Surely gradually weening the baby off is more gentle than a sudden change to his universe that he has no clue about it.

THROW OUT THT BOTTLE!thts the only way..the baby will cry for a couple of weeks, may not eat,but DONT get another bottle..stay strong.,and let him reconcile to the idea..give him stuff other than milk from cups, play him into sleepiness,he will whimper for a nightly bottle, but dont give him one..its just a matter of time and of not letting him wear u out.

i dont think that its a good idea to stop bottle feeding all at once ,,, you should shift to cups with rubber lids then to cups with plastice lids after that you can shift to cups with strow
