Starbucks in Qatar - using UHT milk

Milly-Milly
By Milly-Milly

All starbucks are now using UHT milk to make their coffees. It is disgusting. Everyone needs to make sure they fill out a complaint form if they go there. They charge top (dollar) riyal for their coffee and cut costs by using long life milk. Disgusting. Shame on you Starbucks. I will definitely not be going back.

Met somebody in a Starbucks today; had a Hot Chocolate and they 'appeared to use' fresh milk:-/

It could be said they have seen this post and decided to decant the UHT milk into normal looking milk cartons.

I doubt it though.

In New York (when I was there) Starbucks used UHT milk.

Perhaps they are going back to the original format :-)

Some people prefer UHT milk.

Anyway - let's all boycott Starbucks in Doha - that will stop those pesky Starbucks billionaires;-/

I agree, and that's why I object to Starbucks using a UHT milk that has powdered milk as an ingredient.

mandi - UHT has nothing to do with powdered milk. most uht brands i use have milk, and nothing more. if a particular brand advertises powdered milk as one of its constituents, don't buy it.

The answer for your UHT Milk

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultra-high-temperature_processing.

Well my friend, If UHT milk is not your prefer taste for milk.

You got other options as replacement:

1- The Doha Animal shelter has a big bull(Male cow) you could always milk him. That will be close enough for cow milk replacement.

2-Darude could always bring you some Camel milk from his farm.

3- Britexpat knows the exact location for sheep or goat milk.

4-As for me, well my friend, I could always recommend you some "Chupa Cabra milk."

I heard that Mr. Starbucks himself has read this thread, and will be flying in cows on his private jet, so that Qatar's Starbucks customers will get the freshest milk for their coffees possible.

It will be called FUTC...from udder to cup.

If you are looking for a fuller flavour Italian blend rather than the American milder blend, try Dean and Deluca, or the cafe in the fardan tower that serves Illy coffee. They are the best I have found so far :)

Starbucks (Doha) is using Nadec UHT milk which has powdered milk as one of its ingredients. It certainly is considerably cheaper than regular milk and I personally do not think Nadec skim milk tastes good at all. I can't believe the Starbuck's mothership would approve of this!

perhaps its to do with the high temperatures in the country and the possibility that fresh milk goes off too quickly..

Fresh milk, often referred to as homogenised and pasteurised milk, is sold in the chilled food section of the supermarket. It has a short shelf life and must be kept below 4°C to maintain freshness. Ultra heat treated (UHT) milk, which is sometimes called long-life milk, is slightly different. It has had extra treatment which enables it to be stored at room temperature (as long as it is unopened) for extended periods.

Both fresh milk and UHT milk have undergone pasteurisation and homogenisation before packaging and sale to consumers. Pasteurisation involves heating the milk to 72°C for 15 seconds to kill harmful bacteria that may be present. The milk is rapidly chilled, before homogenisation commences. This involves passing the milk through a fine nozzle to create a smooth, creamy taste and texture.

Fresh milk is then packaged and refrigerated, while UHT milk is exposed to a more powerful heat treatment to inactivate harmful bacteria. This allows the milk to be stored out of the fridge while it is unopened. It is important to chill UHT milk once it has been opened.
