Sold twice by parents, minor girl goes to NCW

Pajju
By Pajju

CHANDIGARH: She was just 13 when she was sold off to a 30-year-old man for Rs 50,000 after a small bidding. Two years later she escaped her captor,
but was sold off again, this time for Rs 100,000.

Now 15-year-old Netra (name changed), who managed to give her second “husband” the slip on Aug 5, Rakhi day, has decided her parents cannot get away with it and that “victimized minors like me” need to send a strong message to society against sexual exploitation of helpless young girls. “The excuse was that my father was poor, so even those who knew about it kept quiet,” said Netra, tears welling up in her swollen eyes. “But I have now decided to take up my case with the NHRC and the National Commission for Women. Maybe there will be some justice for me.”

Narrating her horrifying story on Tuesday, she said, “I was sold by my father for Rs 50,000 to a man in Pinjor first. The other one in Kurukshetra, a mill owner, bought me for Rs one lakh. My family was in dire need of money and my father’s vegetables shop wasn’t doing well. And I ended up getting sold.”

The girl from Rajpura added she was “physically, mentally and sexually” abused by both men for two years. “I still remember the date when I was put up for sale. January 17, 2007. I was just 13. My family had then asked me to accompany them to Pinjore. But when we reached there, I was informed about my marriage. Later, he told me that he had purchased me for Rs 50,000 and that I should do as he wished.

This is just one case in one country. How about what is happening in Yemen, Chiang Mai and other countries?

I just came back from my trip in Chaing Mai and I saw what they called "Long Neck". It brought tears to my eyes seeing such beautiful girls and women in those 4 - 8 klos of brass around their necks. And what for? --- its a real shame.

Sad ..

Initial help will come from the media and secondary help like rehabilitation from the human rights and women rights groups in India. And believe me, we have plenty of these mushrooms each veying for maximum publicy to get a piece of the dol outs...

She doesnt get except by her family who sold her . Dammmm that is so harsh on the girl she gets sold to the man and cant come back . Shame to the family , how can it be shame and they are the ones who sold her . Its a mysterious world . So the only way for her to live a normal life is to get sold to someone else isnt it ?just like the story above

Unfortunately some will hate their family, but others will just take it as "fate"....

By anonymous• 12 Aug 2009 11:45

as we know it. Some of them go on a spend a life with the same man ( till he survives his old age etc.) and as brit said, sometimes it's too late for anything but to accept it as fate. I think it becomes more of issue about the 'family's honour' later on. For ex. if the girl someohow escapes from the clutches of the 'buyer' and escapes, there are chances that she might not be accepted into her family and even the society and be looked upon as responsible for bringing 'shame' to the family. Hence a social pariah. I think the kid in the OP is going to face that.

In your opinon do these marriages last for long or does she get forced to treat that man like a king or something . How would she feel towards her family when she gets married by force and by this way .

As what I say, letting the people to go astrayed and inventing laws of their own dosen't help. Help must comes from somewhere. In this case.

No,the girl doesn't have a say in this. Most often than not,the uncles and aunts , whom the girl might look for protection, are involved in the convincing act.I have seen samll family functions underway for such so called 'marriages'

Yes. Some accept the idea that they would have a better life, others feel that it is their "duty" to be obedient and carry out their parents' wishes. whilst some, don't know till its too late..

Doesnt the girl have a saying in this or just gets forced to get married that way . I guess some accept the idea that she would have a better life

By anonymous• 12 Aug 2009 11:27

...maybe find it pretty acceptable. I know this selling doesn't happen in good cultured families and it kind of gets the social sanction of the near and dear ones behind

lies like 'she will have a better life'. In poor societies, the prospect of a daughter living in Saudi is huge due to the financial and cultural sensitivities.

Exactly brit - I agree,In India..It is as big as a continent, and they are trying everything possible. Things gets difficult and takes ages because of its Huge size and population. Lets give her time..

You stated a very valid point. The supportive attitude from the subjects, reporting the authorities..etc will make the implimentation of systems and laws much more easier. Education plays a big role there.

Let me corrct you there. Parents sell not for the child's better future but for their own. Hyderabadis marrying their kids off to ME citizens is quite a GK in India too...but the transactions don't happen legally and the money changes hands behind the proverbial "wall". Unless the parents understand the hell they are condemning their daughters into - I doubt anyone can do much...

My grandmother was forced to get married at the age of 14 or 13 at that time and it wasnt about money coz they had money , and everygirl in those days were married at that age . Thank god it has changed now , but it still exist in other countries .

When in Saudi, I met about a dozen locals who had married young Indian brides mainly from Hyderabad.

In the majority of cases, the girl was betrothed / sold to the man because the parents "believed" - perhaps naively - that she was going to get a better life..

My point is that the majority has to change the mindset of this minority. If we see it happening in our community then the authities should be informed.

i cant believe the mother would do that, going throught pregnancy 9 MONTHS is so hard even when the baby is born and taking care of them . She took care of her baby for 13 years daaaaaaaam how can she have a heart to do that . i would rather kill my self and do that . Looking for a better life , they dont reliase money is not everythings , health and living in a happy family close together is everthing . What is money going to get them , a bigger house like what we have , where everyone is living in a world of their own , we dont have a target to seek for , just living a boring life everyday that goes by is the same routine , poor people live a better life in my opinion than rich people do . they live in one room or two rooms sleeping eating together sharing day to day stories , working hard to achieve just little money to get them through the day . look at our lives we have money we have houses but what are we looking for the happieness that they have . Sometimes when i see labours working in the street i get shocked how they are working so hard to get food for their family , it just makes me happy knowing that their are people who would go through hard work for their family and children .i hope people would reliaze money isnt everything its nothing , health is more important than anything in this world and living close to your family .

Brit.. I would say that they are mere greedy...

otherwise they can find her some job for her..some daily wages job or as a domestic helper...

Selling them at very early age is even understandable as they cannot feed them or give education to them...but at 13?..they want quick money ..stupid selfish people they are..

The problem is the physical and mental torture will stay with this girl forever . These pearnts shouldnt have kids in the first place , why do they bring an innocent human being and torture them . Where is her mother in all of this and her father is just a selfish person who only thinks about him self . Sadly, this happens all too often. In many cases, abject poverty drives parents to sell their daughters. in other cases , it is just greed.

The worrying thing is that the "victim' is basically a comodity. As she said " Later, he told me that he had purchased me for Rs 50,000 and that I should do as he wished.’’
