Simple solution to Qatar's driving problems..

britexpat
By britexpat

After getting a new rental car this morning, I had an epiphany and the Lord has shown me the means of solving the Driving problems...........

It's so simple.. Why hasn't anyone thought of it ??

The solution is .... Wait for it !!!!!!!

Let's all drive KIA's.

Seriously , it will work.

KIA's accelerate slower than a Mahindra going down hill - so no worries about speeding..

The steering is more wooly than santa's hat.. So, you never take the risk of overtaking anyone..

The brakes are so "infirm" that it takes longer to stop than a fully laden oil supertanker..

All in all, well worth going for!!

Okay Brit....you´re forgiven then, but make sure you keep it no more than a week, and don´t let anyone see you in it or your street cred will be trashed

You see how cunningly simple my solution is ?

with a Kia, she wouldn't be able to get too close. And if she honked her horn, the engine would probably lose power...

The queue jumpers and rude specimens I meet on the road everyday are NOT Qataris.

/I generally allow one car to cut in front of me most of the time but sometimes not at all, because I would have seen them queue jumping from my rear view mirror or wing mirrors. And they wonder why this sheila is a nasty babe in total control of herself. JITL.

//But yes, they "let" me pass because maybe chivalry isn't dead after all and/or they know the trouble they will be in when reported to the police. They were, after all, cutting into the lane of a vehicle going straight.

That's why this plan is so simple , yet fool proof..

With a KIA, the moron CAN'T overtake.. Unless he gets out and pushes to aid the engine...

Its not just Qataris, but lots of Expats too.

As you said, a little more courtesy, patence and less anger goes a long way..

Having driven here for over 3 years the problem keeps getting worse and worse. It is not just Qatari drivers it is everyone trying to keep up with them. When a young Qatari cuts someone off in traffic that person will ensure that anyone needing to get in line has to wait. I know because I do it too. I figure if I have to wait while being cut off then the next person is going to wait for me. The big trucks seem to get it worse than drivers of SUV's or Cars. It's almost as though the Qatari's know that the truck is going to stop. God forbid they hit a Qatari, that driver might as well pack their bags, for they will probably be on their way home to their own country. As for the person who got the finger, isn't that illegal in this country?

Recently, I just drive my leisurely pace and let them beep and flash their lights at me, I just turn up my music, and adjust my mirror so I don't see them. However I am courteous when I come to a road that intersects where I am. I will usually let one car through before continuing. If everyone did that traffic would be so much easier. It's when one Driver wants to cut off everyone causing a major slowdown at every intersection. That and also when police are directing traffic, it seems to me that every time there is a police officer trying to keep traffic smooth it ends up slowing the whole process down and we wait even longer.

I think at this point I have lost the will to get mad. If I were to get mad at every person that Cuts me off or flashes their lights at me, I would be one very mad individual, and I like to smile so I try not to let it get to me, although at times it’s tough to just smile through it.

I agree with you. I have been "fortunate" that I have not been involved in anything serious here. Mind you, after driving in Saudi and Kuwait, Qatar is a piece of cake and I don't really see what people complain about..

By anonymous• 17 Dec 2008 12:41

But I have to disagree, most of the problems on the roads are NOT caused by Qataris but by expats without any driving experience. They come to Qatar and for the first time in their life, they can afford a vehicle.

Withnail - we wish we could report incidences like these to the police, but as the perpetrator is a Qatari they won't do anything about it. Or i'd be surprised if they did!

brit.. you sure they know what "overtake" is? they don't think in these terms.. there is no OVERTAKE for them.. there is some obstacle in front of them, which is annoying them... this is a different way or thinking

Kia's might be "mobile speedbreakers" for Mr.Landcruiser and worse if Mr.Landcruiser does hit ya only the 'i' of the 'kia' might remain. :-)

i agree with you - qatari males, especially the younger ones (but not only) just don't have the maturity/class/education it requires to drive properly.

i don't know what it is but there is just something wrong with men in the Gulf. there was a great segment about Saudis on BBC. i don't remember the exact figures, but something like 75% of women there get a university degree (many in nothing relevant to getting a job after but that's another matter) while most men these days don't go past high school, with many not even finishing that.

maybe the law should forbid them from driving (instead of shooting them) and force them to have their mothers drive them around.

you should report that qatari to the police.

Hey guys there are lots of Kias on the roads though! Hehehehehehehe and eaglemmanuel - most reckless drivers do seem to be young Qatari men with nothing better to do with themselves, so we'll be by default shooting them all.... actually perhaps that should be my next article.....

I totally agree - but I'd like to ask you one thing. Last night I was driving and not only did this Qatari dude butt in in front of me when I was at a traffic light, but he almost caused a crash AND he gave me the finger when I beeped at him for being so stupid. Should we start shooting young Qatari male drivers for being so irresponsible? Or should we just drive Kias?! :-p
