Sharjah: Sharjah police have arrested five members of a gang, for beating up school children, filming the beatings and threatening to post the videos on social networking site Facebook unless ransom money is paid.

The victims known to the police are aged 12-15, while the gang members are 20-25 year olds.

Ransom demands of Dh1,000 a week have been received.

According to Police, some parents have sent their children back to home countries, to avoid the threats. Some children were told their parents would be killed if they reported the incident to the Police.

Videos show intimidating and compromising acts, such as cigarettes being extinguished on the victims’ arms.
Sharjah Police are urging witnesses to come forward if they have been targeted by the gang.

Facebook gang victim escapes death:

Sharjah: The gripping pictures and footage of young boys being tortured on the social networking site Facebook by the 'Death Room' gang members were quite popular among school age kids, said an Indian teenager who had once come face-to-face with the gang.

What saved him was his cheap mobile phone. The gang members assumed he came from a middle class family so the gang would not gain by extorting money from them.

The 'Death Room' gang, which consisted of three people of unknown nationalities and two Pakistanis, was arrested last Thursday by Sharjah Police.

An 'electric pole' cannot flash news around in seconds nor does it incite other people to act in a violent way. Her point being the internet can be dangerous. We all know it can be.

Nicaq25: now you know how more dangerous the internet nowadays?

So? Just because they were threatening to post the videos on Facebook?

If they took pictures of abuse and threatened to tape them to an electric pole, would you be ranting about dangers of electricity?

Yeah. I wonder why they didn't report it to the police at the first instance.
