Shakshouka: Eggy goodness at its best
Amongst the various Qatari traditional foods, my personal favorite is the Shakshouka. If Shakshouka is on the menu, that's what I want. A rich combination of eggs, tomatoes and bell peppers with a dash of spiciness, Shakshouka has become a staple of many breakfast tables at home and in restaurants all over Qatar.
It's versatile and can be eaten at breakfast lunch or dinner. It's simple and yet has many a people hooked. It's healthy, full of proteins and vitamins A and C, almost free of carbs and packed with natural goodness. And, it's my favorite comfort food!
But did you know that Shakshouka's roots lie in North Africa? It's probably from Algeria, Morocco or Tunisia and means 'mixture' in Arabic. It's a household name in these countries and somewhere along the way this creamy, dreamy 'mixture' became part of the Arabian peninsula and entrenched within Qatari cuisine.
Although, basic Shakshouka is made from eggs, tomatoes and bell peppers, it can be adapted to suit your taste buds. You can add parsley, green chilies, paprika, cumin and even meat. It’s usually served with bread to mop up the protein-filled saucy goodness and maybe even a simple salad.
However, you have it, Shakshouka is a healthy, delicious meal that can be eaten alone or with company. If you haven’t tried it yet? Go for it!
What do you think? Is Shakshouka on your menu today?
