Shabby treatment at the Indian consultate
Indian Consulate lets homeless, unpaid Dubai workers sink or swim
Court awards dues, Indian consulate tells workers don’t bother
There’s no point fighting. Take your passports and go home”.
That’s what an official at the labour section of the Indian Consulate is alleged to have told 13 Indian workers, who had gone to the office to submit a written complaint.
The men have been stranded ever since the owner of the company that employed them absconded to India without paying them a salary for nine months.
“When we submitted our papers to the labour section, the official told us that it was better if we took our passports and left the country,” elaborated Anil. “He told us that there was no point in waiting here.”
The men, who have been moved out from their official accommodation in Al Quoz to a one-bed shelter in Satwa, are unsure if their persistence will work in their favour.

Life Rockz thats sad :(
its not the problem with the Indian consulate.... I dono if ur anaware but there are many companies, specially in sharjah who dont pay salaries and crook them in false cases... the court cases goes on for years and years without any solution. in some companies, there are different depts and lawyers setup only to deal with these cases. The law is not strong enough compared to dubai. I think most of the labour related cases which are unsoved are mostly in sharjah...... Dubai has a strong law and whatever the reason is, I think Indian consulate may have told them to just leave asap so that they save their lives of waiting for the case to get over which mit take years.... Certain things are definately not in the hands of the consulate..... specially if its of our country INDIA !!! :(
Well, as long as people are making excuses for this kind of behaviour, it will certainly continue. Each to their own ,I guess.
Thing is they're not letting them sink or swim. They are actually drowning them :)
In this life nothing is permanent.
He may have faced a toughest of the competition and may be other associates did not follow his plans.
This [ leaving temporarily ] may be part of his strategy to turnaround his bussiness.
MM, but he has committed a crime in Qatar. Does India not recognize that? It would surprise me, as there are so very many Indians in Qatar.
Maybe if a case was filed here in Qatar, then there would be proper follow up in India?
nm, thats wasta.
He may be well known & a respectable bussinessman in India.
He has not committed anything wrong there.
Well, if they know the guy is in India now, why don't they arrest him there? Freeze his bank accounts, get his "black" money and compensate those workers?
It's not rocket science, is it?
chutiya people chutiya friends, chutiya understanding (Eng: sometimes friends may mislead too)
lol,
guyz try to understand,
a poster from 'sweden' posts, and then ever to generous mr eternal naysayer put his concerns…..wallahi so funny :)
So basically, the official didn't want the headache, but when the paper approached "The top official" , then the picture changed.
I am sure that since the owner is in India, the Embassy can use its leverage and authorities their to resolve the issue.
mozaismyhero I guess your Indian friends got their passports made several years ago. These days 3 weeks is the processing time and if you don't get your passport during that time, you can report directly to the Ministry.
I understand from a few indian friends to get anything processed in a reasonable time from govt officals, like a passport, you need to show them the color of your money.
These poor laborers have no money so cannot afford justice.
Yep tinker, QL keeps me joyed with oversupply of such lovely posts, :)
But I guess some over-enthusiastic, highly frustrated, eternal pessimistic QLers DO need improvements :)
This is India in it's true avatar...the oficials want bribe and will act only when their purses have been filled with money...shameless characters!
Once officials at Indian embassy in Qatar worked entire day on Eid to sort out a problem for me. There is scope for improvement but they do help out when they can.
Most Indian embassies are severely under-staffed in the region, that is one of the reasons why they can't address issues of each and every Indian living here.
Yazleb..!
tinker, i'm amazed with your 9.23am post, don't be so forgiving :)
wallahi that's not the case always:), they do stand up, n take care their citizen abroad, i'd say much better then many; (there's always chance of improvement though)
…don’t follow when some India-hating idiot questions us being proud of our nation, good bad whatever…
Well at least they respond, wrote a mail to Indian Ministry of External Affairs after reading this and their spokesperson's response was to contact http://www.cgidubai.com/
that's not fair!! what will these people do now?? any advice won't help much! isn't there anyone anyone at all they can go to??
GCC-qar - 1) India doesn't have a super power status in the region.
2) Plenty of Chinese are victims of human trafficking, you can find quite a few in the gulf itself. Not exactly being taken care of!
The majority of the UAE Labor cases are in favor of the employee. So you can't blame the UAE Justice system - infact the laws are much better there.
India should learn from the Chinese who inspite of the 1billion plus people ensure that the Chinese citizen outside its borders given enough regards - since they - in ways more than one - represent China.
If the government of India tries to sell the regional super power image; then it should realize that degrading the status of its citizens degrades this super status too.
Ripe in memory is the recall of the Indonesian Ambassador to the KSA when the latter executed one its workers (a housemaid) - that's what called "ezzat"...
@Indian Official/Foreign Ministry - behold and act - better late than neva'
Ok, what advice would you guys have given these workers now that the owner has disappeared?
Definitely an Indian problem...
yes MIMH I do agree with what you have just said, but if UAE are to have Indians or ex-pats opening their own businesses they should be made to leave a substantial deposit with the government to protect from things like the above post happening.
Here in Qatar i will give u an example:
If you put in a tender to work in the new airport, u must release ALL your company financial reports before you can be selected ( they have recently done this to prevent the above happening ) If the governments of GCC countries adopt this method then it will ensure that this kind of thing cant happen.
BTW i have inboxed u something u may find interesting MIMH
I'm not sure any other embassy would offer any different advice. The owner has gone, thus I am guessing the company has gone, so what's the point in hanging around there? Or am I missing something?
but after years of the same old stories.....dont u think its about time u lot wise up!!!! or r u blinded by the glitter of gold that much??
No Yaz, it's bad enough the laws of a country in the GCC render you lower than a dog but what makes it worse is your own countrymen abusing you and ripping you off. Sadly this does not just apply to Indians but many nationalities, from the moment they apply to an agency in their home country to the fleecing they receive when they arrive at their new work place.
Indian Consulate in Qatar would have a similar story too! They r all the same!
No its a UAE problem. As u know in Arabic countries the labor laws are strict, but no1 adheres to them. Corruption is rife!
“When we submitted our papers to the labour section, the official told us that it was better if we took our passports and left the country,”
Clearly the official was working for the UAE?????
So an Indian rips off Indian laborers and goes back to India and then the Indian consulate, (presumably another Indian) tells them to forget about their lost money and just go back to India.
Doesn't seem to be the UAE problem, seems to be a problem born in India!
really after all these years of u guys working in Emirates.......did u really expect any thing different????
I mean come on u put us Brits in our places years ago, bout time u lot started to grow a back bone & scrape ur dignity up off the floor.
If all the Indians left Dubai.....It would grind to a halt, u guys REALLY DO hold the upper hand, just need to know how to use it!!!
Even those labourers are proud to be Indian, dear..It is just that they need to be heard too...
Can someone post a Proud to Be Indian thread in response, listing all the achievements. hey I'd even take one on Kerala....
