Any recommendation on specific brand for ADSL Modem/wifi Router. 3Com, Dlink, etc. I have seen some posts with US Robotics and others with Dlink. Which brand do you recommend that also allows more customization

Thanks

Encapsulation mode should be VCMUX and connection type or mode should be PPPoA. I have tried all combinations just to mess around and see what gave better performance and neither LLC or PPPoE would work. Try the combination I just mentioned and come back.

Also, have you gotten yourself properly wired to the router yet?

And normally the log-in credentials for dlink's are just admin with a blank password. I've had a couple dlink's and am currently using a Di-624, and it's admin, and no password.

The username and password for your router are both: admin

Blinking Status light is good. It means normal operation.

What about your settings?

Unplug it and replug it in. It should have a wizard that runs at startup of the installation cd, no?

Guys - Thank you both very much for helping.

I can not even get to that stage as the D-Link Wireless ADSL Router is not showing a steady light under status, it just blinks!!

are you sure it's not

VPI 0

Some routers' password is password

sounds about right, e46. she still needs to setup the connection on her browser. ideally the address should be http://192.168.0.1 (user: admin, and leave the password field blank).

still working on checking with qtel, princess. but try following e46's instructions for now.

Hey mocha, hope I'm not interfering.

Under Basic Settings:

Does Your Internet Connection Require A Login? choose Yes

Encapsulation choose PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet)

Usename/Password enter your Q-Tel supplied ones

Idle Timeout 0 (zero)

Internet IP Address choose Get Dynamically From ISP

Domain Name Server (DNS) Address choose Get Dynamically From ISP

Under ADSL Settings:

Multiplexing Method Choose LLC-Based

VPI enter 8

VCI enter 35

Under Wireless Settings:

Name (SSID): choose what you want to call your network

Channel: I have channel 11

Wireless Access Point:

Tick Enable Wireless Access Point

Security Options

Secure your network. Do not choose Disable. WEP is ok, not great and can be cracked by your neighbors. Choose WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key) or WPA-802.1x

Hope this helps.

Problem is that the cable from teh ADSL modem does not fit into the router........! This is the same router that I used in Bahrain, but looks like the set up is totally different in Qatar....

By mochafrap• 11 Sep 2006 13:17

princess start by taking the cable out of the adsl modem and plugging it into your router. look for the port that says ADSl, WLAN, WAN, etc.. (it's usually seperated from the other ports).

when you have done so switch the router on and let me know so i could tell you what to do next.

it does make sense. would you mind telling me what model it is? the model is usually beneath the brand name (ie, Dlink in this case).

Please excuse me if I sound really silly... I am really not that savvy in IT... If I say Dlink does that make sense?
