Sectarianism in the workplace !!

Knight Returns
By Knight Returns

I could never have imagined sectarianism was so strong in Abu Dhabi. One of my friends and a colleague was interviewed for a good position in a government Oil and Gas Company in Abu Dhabi. He was good in the interview so the employer offered his expected salary and perks.

Finally, when he was asked to fill up his personal details, they apologized to him for rejecting his candidature. Why? Because he was a 'Shia' Muslim and as per their policy they didn't hire Shia Muslims in government companies!

I guessed they might not say it openly to anyone else...in this case they had to admit it as they came to know he was a shia after having settled his salary. They had no solid reason to disqualify him after that.

Anyway, you can find out at your level if you don't believe this.

Isn't the candidate being interviewed also an outsider?

I believe the colleague I am talking about will not lie to me on such a pretext as I know him well for the last 2 years.

Its possible due to the sectarian unrest and uprisings in the recent past in countries like Bahrain and Kuwait, they might have made this an unwritten policy.

Any one is free to clarify this matter with the HR of Takreer ADNOC on a personal level so that the real picture is revealed. It's possible they won't admit it to an outsider.

I've never understood this fascination with the old American singing duo. What Sunny and Cher have to do with infighting is quite strange.

Regarding the Sunni/Shia matter, these are problems back in my country also, Shia will always favor shia, even when i come to admission/exams in university! and vice verca

Agree with Mike, There is no religion when it comes to the business, job, Work...

recently happened to one of my colleague, He went in harsh arguments with a Muslim arab consultant, and in the end Consultant was shouting like Kaafir.. blah blah blah.... and I was like WTF where religion came, and after an hour, when they wanted to sort out the matter, my only question was, What is the religion of Construction? How can you drag religion in work, But that arrogant a**hole couldn't understand this thing!

The mere fact of asking people's religion, gives me enough room to think that there might be some level of discrimination.

People should be qualified based on their education, knowledge, skills, experience and professional suitability. Keep your religion and politics for yourself.

Agreed. Religion is the worst criteria to judge someone on as it does not affect how you do your job, well unless you are a priest or an iman.

How I wish in this region people were qualified based on their education, knowledge, skills, experience and professional suitability without any bias towards where they come from which IMO is another point of discrimination.

MIMH, Sajmarwab is wrong, this post is not baseless, he should check in Bahrain, Iran also!

Knight Returns: I’m sorry but your friend’s story sounds too fake to be true. I don’t think such multi-billion organizations like that would openly admit to such practices.

Please qualify bashing Sajmarwab, is it against Sunnis, Shias or anyone else from the Muslamic dispora?

Where is bashing btw? I can't see! :(

"bashing against Muslims, this thread is baseless..."

Sajmarwab, go back to bed.

MIMO, It's just hatred between Shia and Sunni... and there are many cases happen every day on both sides, but not every one of them are making it to news on any medium.

By anonymous• 2 Jul 2012 07:44

It does seem strange. Even if you are going to discriminate you don't tell the candidate, you just tell them sorry you have not made it.

I have a very good Shiite fiend working at ADNOC.. As I said earlier, I doubt whether ANY organization would admit to sucg practices, even if they occurred.

I dont believe this. May be this link be forwarded to Takreer and let someone from their HR confirm else it is just some story created by a candidate who did not make it.

Why do they have to write if they are Shia or Sunni? Why not just Muslim?

By FathimaH• 2 Jul 2012 06:54

All Muslims are certainly not the same. You have good and bad Muslims, pious and evil Muslims, noble and ignoble Muslims, knowledgeable and ignorant Muslims etc.

And our Prophet said that Muslims will divide into more sects than even the Christians and Jews, and the only ones upon the truth will be they who follow the Quran and the way of the Prophet with knowledge and understanding.

This has happened in Takreer ADNOC Group! Does it mean they will not hire anyone other than a Sunni Muslim? What about qualified and experienced Oil and Gas professionals from the west? Or is their discrimination only against Shias?

I find it totally baseless to have this kind of discrimination if they aren't getting along well with Iran. My friend who lost this job because of his sect is originally from Pakistan.

I really do. Sadly though when it comes to the whole Sunni- Shia conflicts both sides have their share of misdeeds and discrimination, and give as good as they get. So whilst in some countries and/or areas, where Shias dominate, you may see oppression and ill treatment of Sunnis the same will be the reverse as well. And due to the wrong doings of some many have had to bare the brunt.

The dividing of Muslims into sects are by far one of the greatest trials upon us(Muslims). And these trials then extend from religious disputes into our everyday lives and have ended up deadly too. Our Prophet did warn us of this in his lifetime, and exactly what he prophesied happened. Today many lives have been lost and ruined due to this reason.

with the problems with Iran, you dont expect shias to get favorable treatment...
