Any idea whether today's announcement will affect Doha College, ASD and DESS?

See this: http://f1a.me/g1b4w

Minister of Education and Higher Education and Secretary General of Supreme Education Council HE Saad bin Ibrahim al-Mahmoud has issued decision No 10 of the year 2009 on the schedule for Qatari schools, including the independent and semi-independent ones for the scholastic year 2009-2010. According to the decision, the scholastic year 2009-2010 will begin on Sunday, September 27, 2009, for independent schools, semi-independent and private schools.

I know that at the Gulf English School, (even spoke to the HR manager) that students will be starting school on the advertised dates, which is the 1st of September. No special holiday there!

I'm interested in the Gulf English & Qatar International School. I know the school have said they did not recieve official notification from the ministry which they usually do if there;s a change in dates

it is actually for all school.. but there are a few schools, such as ASD & Doha College, who have special permission from the Ministry of Education to follow their own Agenda and timetables... so u gotta check with ur school if they on the special license or not

WYSIWYG

I guess it's only for the local/independant/semi private Qatari schools as it's not mentioned about International schools.

If it helps, DES (Dukhan English School) is opening as usual on August 30. It's an international school owned by QP, and we're working reduced hours til the end of Ramadan, but definitely still opening at the end of summer!

I do think that it means just government schools, but the fact that it says 'private' schools makes me a bit worried. All the teachers i know have their flights booked 2 come back, but will be hanging around for another month if school starts on the 27th. I noticed 2 that Peninsula only mentioned government schools so am hopin they r right.

Do the schools have their own independence day celebration?

LOL,

This is about Qatari government schools :)

They call some of them "independent", and the rest were converted in bulk and can't be "independent" from day 1, so they are called "semi-independent"...

reporting this as "government and Independent schools," not the private/international ones.

My son's school announced the new term date as 27 September. I thought it was unusual because other schools will be starting on 1st week of September. But now with this announcement, then maybe they had known the news earlier.

i called the school 2day. they are unsure about the situation 2. some international schools have received heavy fines as well for opening last year when they were told not 2. i have a feeling though that the gulf times have made a mistake & that it will just be for government schools

offwego07 : I remember that, the schools sent out last minutes text message to the parents just the day before.

It may say Qatari schools, but it also says private schools. Also many of the private schools have high numbers of qatari students, like cambridge, english modern school & qis

I seem to remember. ASD was not affected then, and will not be affected this time either. Read the article again. It says "QATARI schools" meaning schools for Qatari children.

which is starting on August 23, just like the American universities over at Education City plan to do.

The American universities are tied to their home campus calendars and the need to finish terms by a certain dates to ensure relevant VIPs can attend graduations at both campuses, etc.

ASD roughly follows what a typical American school's calendar would look like. While not having to deal with A and O level exams like UK schools, they have to deal with AP exams, US college applcation deadlines, etc. And any students/staff wishing to take summer school classes back in the US need to be finished up by mid-June.

I don't know why the government feels the need to dictate private school calendars. If they want to control Qatari government schools, go right on ahead. But private schools should be free to set their own schedules (according to the relevant details that affect them), and parents can either accept it or find another school.

HOW ABOUT DMBS SCHOOL IT WILL BE ON TIME OR NOT

A lot of locals support this decision for the schools to open late beacause of Ramadan and Eid but what they don't realise is that the number of teaching days has to be made up.As a result schools will be closing late next year- a lot of parents with kids in independent schools were complaining this summer that the school year is too long when in the government system most kids were finished by the end of May.The independent schools don't usually close until the end of June: next year the academic year won't finish until mid/late July.

Last year when the govermnment issued a last minute change to dates, all schools were forced to follow them. Is this announcement different to the one last year. I know our school was going to stay open but was forced to close.

Any more info anyone?

I am in home country for summer holiday now. I can not believe the school break will be nearly 3 months. Just like Novita said it's so disorgnize... I almost forgot this is Qatar style. I try to check from DESS and ISL website they have not changed it yet. We will see...

Wow, 27th, that would be quite some time added on to the current break. I am curious too whether it will affect my school.

DESS announced in their last newsletter that school would be starting on time but this will need to be checked now that the directive has been announced.

Till DESS break up beginning of last July nothing being said or announced by the school.

The government should tell the schools in advance before the school break up, so the schools' management can then announce it to the parents.

typical Qatar ... so disorganized ...
