Verdict in illicit relations case soon

Staff Reporter

Published: Friday, 7 March, 2008, 02:02 AM Doha Time
THE verdict in the case of a Filipino man and a woman, who admitted to having illicit relation, is expected next Thursday.
Sources said they were caught on January 2 in the house of the woman’s sponsor in Mesaimer area.
The sponsor said he saw the man entering the gate of his house, which was opened by the woman, before they went to her room.
“I immediately called the police who arrested them within a short time,â€‌ he said.
The man, 24, is also facing charges of entering the house without the consent of the owner and the woman, 29, is also accused of facilitating his entry into the house, crimes for which the penalty could be up to one year imprisonment.
Sources say that the woman is pregnant. Both the accused are Muslims, which means the rules of Shariah are applicable to them.
An Ethiopian housemaid, who was present in the surroundings of the room when the two were caught, was initially charged with hiding the affair, but public prosecution dropped the charges for lack of evidence.
Abdul Hadi al-Marri, the lawyer of the two, asked to suspend the penalty in order not to harm the health of the baby and to deport them instead.
He asked to lash the man 80 times before deportation according to the Islamic rule, instead of jailing him “considering the cost of their detention.â€‌
The lawyer asked the court to consider the fact that the two belonged to the same country, which would make it more likely for them to form a family in their country.
