Rights group blasts Saudi Arabia and Oman

New York-based Human Rights Watch has slammed the governments of Saudi Arabia and Oman for putting the lives of their construction workers at “stake,” and refusing to introduce a ban on midday construction work during the summer months.

Currently, out of the six GCC states, only Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE have introduced the midday work ban for outdoor workers across all sectors, the majority of whom come from the construction industry.

“It is shocking that Saudi Arabia and Oman continue to refuse to institute a ban on midday construction work during the summer months,” HRW Middle East deputy director Joe Stork told Construction Week.

“The extreme temperatures in the region at this time of year make this an absolute imperative. Lives as well as livelihoods are at stake.”

With temperatures rising year on year, the majority of GCC states have realised the need for a ban on work during the summer afternoons, in order to control heat-related illnesses and deaths on construction sites.

In June, the National Centre for Meteorology and Seismology reported that the UAE experienced temperatures past the 50 degree Celsius mark. Saudi Arabia and Oman have similar climates and have yet to introduce a mid day break.

Some reports have suggested that the Riyadh-based National Society for Human Rights (NSHR) is urging companies to instill their own summer mid day break between the hours of 11am to 2pm in order to increase productivity on site.

open your eyes and you will see it happening right here in Doha...some of the contractors ignore the heat ban...I know that for a fact because I've seen it right next door at a villa construction site daily.

Shanawazt, Human Rights Watch is an international organization with its headquarters in New York. It is not an American "commission." And there have not been "millions" of Palestinians killed in Gaza. Please report facts correctly - if you do not, the Israelis use your ignorance to make their own points which is a tragedy. The only millions of people involved have been the number of Palestinians who have been forced into exile either by war, occupation or economic hardship. There have been war crimes, there have been massive involuntary relocation, there continues to be illegal occupation but there has not been "genocide."

shanawazt - I totally AGREE with you the US response to Gaza was pathetic and it's current tone to Israel is not strong enough. But frankly was the Arab response - broadly meaning Syria, Egypt, the GCC... any better? Lot of frustration in the Arab press at the time over the lack of unity in Arab response.

I'm not looking to start an argument with you have freely recognised the many problems the US has either caused or made worse by remarkably stupid and short-sighted actions in the region. However I do not think anyone can blame the US, or indeed the West, entirely for everything that has happened here... and when I hear rants like yours it drives me crazy, just as I expect you would be upset if I pointed that many fingers so generally at you.

I have not read the HRW report but HRW is an international organisation with an HQ that happens to be in the US. It is also calling for investigation of Bush's human rights abuses, as well as levelling charges against Nigeria, Russia, Chechnya, China, the Congo...

Let us hope together for improvements, including that a Palestinian state will be restored.

Salaam

UN Human Rights Council Approves Gaza Inquiry

(Geneva, January 13, 2009) – The United Nations Human Rights Council’s vote to investigate violations in the Gaza crisis by Israel alone instead of by both sides weakens the credibility of the investigation, Human Rights Watch said today.

The council voted on January 12, 2009, to dispatch an urgent international fact-finding mission to investigate violations of international human rights and humanitarian law by Israel against the Palestinian people. The resolution was approved 33 to 1, with 13 abstentions.

du u know who makes the HRW report?

the common thing about the labours and the gazans are denial of rights

the only diffrence is the plastinian ppl were killed in their own country(which was brutal exploitation of their rights)

where as these labours are getting killed in other country(considering ur so called HRW report if they work in the same manner without rest obviously the will die)

i didnt compare. my point was y did america reacted so slowly on this big serious issue of gaza were ppl rights were brutally exploited.....by killing them in their own country

and y it is stooding up first when it comes to exploitatioon of labour which is a small issue comparing the gaza exploitatioin(are they trying to show that they r active)

My boss told me " you are fired"

Had these americans not interfered or entered the land of hijaz or the arab...

al this issue would'nt have arrived

Arabs were strick follower of shariyah no one treated human beings so humbly like they did...things were smooth for the arabs until these white morons came in

human rights, united comission ,,status of women, treating women with justice.......all this qualities were copied from the arabs, they practised it. an american saw it an wrote a book on human rights, treating women equally....and etc...and took the credit....

Besides the innerformation is all their action r influedced and controled by americans....

u cannot teach a teacher the same thing what u learned from ur teacher.

do not bring the plight of Gazans to the laborers of Saudi & Oman, the issue is about their (laborers) rights to rest during certain periods on working day, this being deprived & not implemented by Oman & Saudi as per HRW report.

HRW needs to be neutral but this is Sad, Saudi needs to implement the BAN asp.
