Residents worry about rise in HIV/AIDS cases?

The Medical Commission's latest report revealing rise on HIV/AIDS cases among the newly-recruited workforce has horrified a wide section of the society as this might contribute in spreading the disease in the country.
It's in today's Peninsula newspaper....any comments

The government is actually implementing mandatory HIV/AIDs tests for citizens. If they have spent a certain amount of time out of the country and then come back to Qatar they are given an HIV/AIDs test. I know this is true for the males, but I dont think for the females.

That said, they are not dragging the guys in, so who knows how much it is enforced, but I do know that it is happening.

What angers me, is that HIV is 100% preventable. Education and awareness is the key!

There are even rapid HIV test kits you can use at home that only take 20 minutes to get the results. The problem is with these, it can take 6 weeks for the virus to show after infection and in that time, you an infect many others.

aids is punishment for the fornicators, those who practice free sex, who had elicit affair, who prefers, one night stands, who dont value marriage.

Look no further...unless and untill the above is not eradicated and cut its sources....aids continues

if you go to "red district" areas of countries with high HIV/AIDS incidents, you will see that mostly tourist frequent on tis areas are westerners (with the exception of Koreans and Japanese nowadays) and they are attracting a lot of local women on these countries.

And again the perception (or reality) that these westerners are also high volume alcohol drinkers, are also reckless in protecting themselves when using the hospiatlity girls (pros......) they take back in their roooms.

And since these tourist are frequent travelers (they can afford it of course) to different countries, thus the perception that all kinds of disease are transmitted by these tourist (mostly but not all are westerners).

Aids originating from primates is misleading...

HIV attacks Human T cells.

They were created in a laboratory.

If it indeed originated from primates why then it does not affect the primates?

Unlike bird flu the HIV does not cause the animals harm!

perception and reality are two different things, so he may well be right in what people here perceive.

it would certainly fit the pattern of blaming everyone else for everything and taking responsibility for nothing.

I agree xellos, the origin of HIV/AIDS is much too controversial, we'd argue endlessly on it.

Education is really important and it has to be sensitive to the prevailing culture. I know a lot of highly educated men who compare s*x with a condom to sucking a sweet with its wrapper still on...So they cant be bothered. Unbelievable.

actually it's a perception regarding spreading of HIV/AIDS virus. Usually, tourist visiting HIV/AIDS prone countries such as but not limited to southeast Asia are mostly westerners so the connotation of the west as source of the virus. And also, the widespread belief that west is famous for "free sex" and free sexual relationship including swift changing of partners contribute to the idea that these viruses are transfered fast by westerners

HIV, the infectious agent of AIDS, is thought to have originated in non-human primates in sub-Saharan Africa and transferred to humans during the 20th century. The epidemic officially began on 5 June 1981.

Two species of HIV infect humans: HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-2 may have originated from the Sooty Mangabey (Cercocebus atys), an Old World monkey of Guinea-Bissau, Gabon, and Cameroon.[1] HIV-1 is more virulent. It is easily transmitted and is the cause of the majority of HIV infections globally. HIV-2 is less transmittable and is largely confined to West Africa.

Let them, let's not forget AIDS originated in Africa, and it's the Qatari population that is seeing the fastest rising AIDS rates in the country, not the ex-pat. They need to learn how to use a condom when they go to Bahrain or Thailand, and the effects that bringing home an STD will have on the wives and the kids.

No Filipinos can go-out of the country if tested positive on HIV/AIDS. If anyone catches the virus while in abroad, since there is no mandatory re-medical if there is no change in sponsorship, then the person will remain positive for the virus. But once he changed sponsorship or employer or country of destination, then he needs to go for a medical examination again and HIV/AIDS test is mandatory.

How would you explain to a businessman who comes for a couple of days to have an AIDS test? But don't they sometimes require the services of some nice-looking residents? How about the tourists who stay two or three weeks? Do you want to confine them in some sterile rooms?

And even if you improve awareness? Don't they try to do the same thing with the driving habits? Does it work??

I think there should be mandatory testing for Aids once a year. And there defintely needs to be more awareness. The Qatar Red Crescent is trying but it's information is more of a religious nature then actual fact, which is dangerous. Unfortunatly things like censorship keep the real facts about AIDs from getting out there.

I wonder why this worrying is restricted to newly recruited individuals. People fly in and out of the country all the time, and you never know what, God forbid, they are bringing back with them. I always found it a bit silly that we are required to undergo medicals only when we first come here...either we shouldn't have medicals at all or have them yearly.

Another thing is there is almost no awareness of the disease. And no better breeding ground for the spread of a disease than ignorance.

It's true people get away without performing a medical test for atleast 1 month, but the medical commission is now implementing a new strategy to do medical before the third day of anyone's arrival in the country.

But i guess there should be some measures to prevent the spread from people who are already infected and living in the country am sure there must be a few as it was discovered early last year, few waitresses from a famous restaurants were found +ve ... shocking isnt it and the too was revealed after they had spend sometime in Qatar ... more then 6 months i believe...

it's scary.. i think they have to perform a medical exam on the very first day after arrival. Sometimes ppl spend in Qatar 1,2 or even 3 months before they are going to make their medical tests.. who knows how many persons he/she can infect during this period!

On the other hand, that's what I say every time: USE THE PROTECTION, damn it!

Thats not the issue, if you get infected you are finished...

Much of the early response to AIDS in the UK was driven by a fear that the epidemic would eventually spread beyond the minority groups it was originally associated with, and would have a major impact on the general population. In recent years, with HIV not spreading as widely as many had once predicted, HIV prevention efforts in the UK have been focused on the communities most affected, including gay men, people of African ethnicity and injecting drug users.

What have we got in Qatar to prevent it? How abt people who are already infected, and living in the open??
