Religious Discrimination?

On my way to work these morning, I have the habit of using the elevator instead of the stairs. As I was about to close the elevator door, I saw an Arab waving his hand as if he's asking me to wait for him. So, I waited for him and we were both inside the elevator --- just the two us.

I greeted him by saying 'As-Salamu Alaikum'. To my surprise, he asked me if I am a Muslim. I shook my head from left to right and politely said "no".

"Then why are you saying 'As-Salamu Alaikum' if you are not a Muslim", he asked. Before I could even utter another word, he looked at me and said "don't say the word if you're not a Muslim".

Is it prohibited to say 'As-Salamu Alaikum' if the person saying it is a non-Muslim?

Well, I am a muslim and I would say 'wa alaikum salam wa rahmathullahi wabarakathuhu' if I was greeted that way. He is mentally sick. Not all muslims think that way dude, very rare as tallg said. just take it easy.

I would have asked: How do you want to be greeted then? I am still confused. New here so I am asking for help.

I heard a little girl today who was obviously new to the Middle East, shout out, 'look mummy, look at the Shepherds'. The local men just laughed and said thank you to the Mum.

You met a bad tempered person, let it be. As we say in the US, sh#t happens. Thanks for being nice.

Out of kindness he should reply to you greetings.I never disccuss religion in the public.Whatever someone's religion is,this is their buisness not mine and would never think someone is worse because of what they believe in.

And Im muslim myself and what he told ya is utterly bullshit bcoz that thing literally means "Peace be upon you" and has nothing to do with religion. Even non-muslim Arabs say it as well.

Man,

i feel so sad to hear about that to be in Qatar, it is not islamic at all, at least he should reply " Wa Alikum". and i mean it "at least" because as per holy Quran ( Muslims' holy book) if someone (muslim or not) greets you with a greeting, then you have to reply with same greeting or better one.

moreover, not all ppl understand their religions in the way it should be understood that why there are wars based on religion because people see themslves right by power of God. which is wrong .

also as per holy quran, everyone is free to belive but he is responsible for that believing and will be asked at Qiama day about that, so, it is up to everyone to believe in what he see it right but not to blam anyone else but himslf in case that is wrong.

so forget it and take it easy.

at least my friend many people here has already replied with more than his greeting reply :D.

Kind Regards and Salam :)

You should had asked him then and there for your knowledge that why he told you not to greet him, but since for reasons you refrained to do so hence i suggest you to just forget about it, people make mistakes and after knowing from you being non muslim, he should had replied Alaikum (upon you).

Clarifications

A long hadidth which is narrated from Aishah (ra) the mothers of the believer of an incident where a group of Jews visited prophet Muhammad (SAW) and said As-Samu alaika (death be on you) and Allah's messenger (SAW)replied Alaikum (upon you), recorded in Bukhari.

The hadidth is long with a detailed message to be kind and lenient in all matter, i can provide more details if some one seriously want to read arabic/english

Mr. Blazer, with due respect to your information above i suggest to consider when one is quoting prophet Muhammad (SAW) one should be sure of the incident and try to communciate exact words of the blessed prophet (SAW) or one should chose to be silent..

Allah knows best.

Peace to All :-)

Complete utter crap. I am muslim and never heard the likes of this. I actually like it when someone greets me this way, shows they are making an effort to reach out.

I agree with Zayd, you shared an elevator with an a**hole

Our Indian Marketing Manager once said, never greet AsSalam Alaikum to a muslim if you are non-muslim, better greet them in English. so I reacted, why? can you give me a valid reason? My Pakistani Supervisor replied saying never mind... you are in Qatar. It's a free country, you can say what you want to say. Kaliwali

Obviously, he got up on the wrong side of the bed, and took it out on you.

According to the tradition of the Prophet, he once answered the greeting "As Salaamu Alaikum" from a non-muslim with the term "Wa Alaika" roughly meaning "Same to you".

So you go ahead and greet them, its upto them to reply to you correctly!!!
