Rate the WORST roundabouts in Doha

Although the hard working expats in this city are considered as mere disposables or worms in actual by the locals, I think I can still vent out with my expat fraternity on this forum.

Sorry for the out burst, I am actually driving a small car these days and am being treated as an ant between running elephants and trust me its just not me; its with every small car driver these locals behave with, the other day on the road from E-Ring to the Mall, this Red Sierra Truck local revved his engine and honked and flashed so much to the poor lancer guy that he actually got confused. On top of it this guy just sped up on lancers back to actually RAM in it, had not this poor lancer moved his car on right in a semi second, this Red Sierra truck would be inside the back of the lancer and ultimately the cops would have accused the lancer guy, why was he stopped in the middle of the road although he was not;.... so sing along.

OK! coming back to the subject, how would the people like to rate the worst round about in Doha. I rate the Sports Roundabout the 1st Worst.

It took me 18 minutes to cross the mere 500 meters from the half of road from Al-Sadd to Sports Round about, with every big local SUV going from extreme left to right without signal and all the cheap guys coming from the side roads from right on you.

2nd Worst on Muntaza on D-Ring Road, atleast 15 minutes anytime after 10 am .

3rd Worst Decoration on Salwa. Rate yours, may be some educated local reading this would communicate it to the authorities.

Talking about traffic lights at the R/As - actually, this was a a good move - cos having to rely on the goodwill of other drivers to give way to let anyone pass is almost non-existent.

And so, it's like, if they can't treat other drivers with common courtesy, then we'll just have to put up traffic signals. Even these are not abided by many a time but better than before and in time, maybe the drivers will learn how to drive and let drive. :P

Another thing is that Decoration R/A (and other similar ones) with the slip road on the right for the right turnoffs, helped to ease the traffic congestion quite a bit. That was good planning.

All the Roundabouts are fine in Doha. But they become bad due to some crazy drivers.

By Xena• 18 Apr 2011 21:20

are a death trap.... I hate them... I will rather go out of my way to go to a traffic signal that follow a roundabout...

1) Jaidah

2) Race Course R/A

3) Al Rayyan Petrol Station R/A

4) Market/Industrial/Ain Khalid

5) Air Force R/A

These are just some of the ones I avoid daily, by finding alternate (albeit longer) routes.

Oh and Hasan1024, I agree... who the hell came up with signals on R/As.. about the dumbest idea out... one or the other people....one or the other....

Jaidah flyover roundabout is a death trap. people seem to become temporary insane when they get to that roundabout.

its so satisfying that there are more people on my side than against me! really! for those who think expats are treated well - well good luck, I dont have an ill will to wish you a bad experience. Secondly the people who are asking me to pack and go, trust me, I never came here, people literally pleaded me to come here, so I also dont wish you an ill will - also you should not get a similar treatment like the one I wrote in my subject post - treatment of the small lancer by the Red Sierra Truck - driven by a LOCAL - like I saw it the hate on the face of that LOCAL who was continuosly honking reviving flashing just to make the other guy move away from his way - since he owns the way - since he is a local!!

You know the one reason that comes to my mind is that since they drink gallons of coffee, they drive fast to get to the rest room in urgency, so why not get a small potty in the car if you can have fridge in there?? any inputs??

R/A is not the problem. Major problem is the way roads are constructed over here. Try Al Waab street which has so many Signal Junction.

Muaither roundabout! Or any with traffic police hovering causing traffic. I also agree with the three lanes coming to two lane roundabout, they're just a pain in the rear!!!

By Minoush• 18 Apr 2011 11:10

How about the locals who run the red lights at R/A's because there are no cameras? God forbid you stop at a red light in a R/A, the land cruiser rams his SUV so close, honks, and flashes to get you to run the red, so he can go.

I think The Equstrian R/A on forusia Rd is the worst - Or any of the "Under construction" R/A's on Salwa.

first: expats are not treated the way u described!! i have a lot of friends coming from different parts of the world and they all are happy here

second: if u r so upset with "locals", do u really have to tolerate them?? pack and go back to where u r local!!!

Jaidah - Have to navigate it everyday...always note accidents waiting to happen. Near miss or near hits everyday - sometimes resulting in small accidents. Yesterday a huge trailor navigated the roundabout at high speed!!!!! It would have been a catastrophe had one car come in his way – besides all roundabouts with signals are accident danger zones.

In Bahrain/Dubai, they demolished all roundabouts and made way for signal lights. Here they have put signal lights in the roundabouts!!!!! Seen some major accidents where flashing yellow lights on the roundabouts have confused the driver.

Off late, containers have been falling off trailors regularly – again this is on account of the speed these trailors navigate these roundabouts.

Ashghal are carrying out some traffic density studies (two rubber strips on the road is a traffic count instrument) – hopefully the conclusion would be that roundabouts are bottlenecks and roundabouts are useful when the traffic density is low.

Any roundabout after 8pm is a death trap with the way people drive at night here. I keep telling people that driving here is an arms race in which weight and power are everything. If other drivers are in small SUVs, get a big one; if they up to a Land Cruiser, get a Suburban; if they up to a Suburban, get a cement truck.

Sure it is environmentally unfriendly and totally unnecessary, but there is no way I am putting my kids in anything that weights less than an elephant in a country whose leading cause of death is auto accidents (19% of all death last year and a dozen or more times that of the US or UK).

I used to careen around the Jaidah R/A in a jiffy without mishap, maybe my motor skills were good. :0)

Sana R/A - yeah...horrible! I always used the middle lane though, like a law abiding alien ... but didn't go by that R/A very often, so I guess that's why I nearly got squished every time.

That is the problem at many Roundabouts. I don't know who planned it but he needs his head examined.

The odd shape underneath Jaidah flyover is a nightmare too, its not exactly a R/a

Those above are a piece of cake.

Try Sana Roundabout: 3 lanes from B Ring and Ras Abu Abood go to two lanes around the roundabout. I NEVER go in the middle lane for fear of being squished!

"Educated locals"... laugh my A off!!! They may have the letters after their name but they are not educated - educated people do not behave like imbred mutants with no discernable respect for life or property (the property and lives of others that is) - the sooner locals are banned from the roads of Qatar the better things will become for the rest of us.

Rant over - the r/a (oddly shaped actually) underneath the flyover on the Cornishe side of "The Centre" is a nightmare.
