mentioning Ql or not mentioning it i thought the main idea was to get our threads to the public eye through this newspaper. ( sharing the awarness!!)

i do admint not mentioning QL was a bit slizy but i am happy that it made the newspaper and people are reading about it and maybe benefiting from the info.

not to mention the pretty ad for my name, my age, my title, my company, and the group the hold my company i mean why are those info even relevant! i was surprised to see it. at any case i deleted all these info from my profile just for not having this mistake happening again.

on another topic i started a new thread yesterday and was kinda queen on hearing your views about it but no one participated :(

labda - you should write a book about the QL phenomenon and give an exclusive serialisation and interview to The Peninsula. That way you'd get yourself, your book and QL mentioned all in one article. The holy trinity hattrick!

By labda06• 21 Aug 2008 09:05
labda06

tallg yes I realised that :) And its certainly not restricted to Doha!

Forget the authors name, cite the book! lol Its all about publicising the book, more publicity = more books sold = more in royalties hehe. If I was an author I wouldnt care two peas if my name was cited....just mention the dam* book, so that I can retire already.

lol - yes, in Doha the English papers are generally just full of copy and pastes!!!! Haven't you realised that yet!

Using your book analogy, if you take something from a book and print it then yes, you should cite both the book and the author. But if you actually spoke to the author of the book and he told you something that you then print you'd only have to quote the author, even if what he told you was also in the book.

If the Peninsula had taken the story straight from QL, without speaking to asamarji, then they would have been obliged to cite QL.

Maybe mentioning QL would have enhanced the story, and it would certainly have been courteous. But not mentioning it definitely doesn't constitute plagiarism, just bad manners.

By labda06• 21 Aug 2008 08:34
labda06

ok so what you're saying then is newspapers are all full of $%^& just copy and paste from each other? Where did the reporter find her info? ON QL!!! If you made reference to a book, you would quote the book and its author. So, she should have quoted asarmji AND QL. Why tell half a story...

Mentioning QL would have enhanced the story. It would have made Qatar sit up and realise that QL (for the most part, haha) is a good/reliable source of info and has plenty of diverse opinions that would make for an interesting read...plus we break news here faster than news agencie (kinda) hehe.

Qatari please consider this as my application for the position of QL Public Relations Officer :)

No, the primary source is asamarji. Your logic would mean newspapers would have to credit each other all the time! A person can tell their story to as many different news agencies as they like.

I guess mentioning QL doesn't enhance the story in any way, so why bother mentioning it? Though interestingly they did think it was worth mentioning where asamarji worked.

btw, I should point out that the managing editor of The Peninsula doesn't hide the fact that she's on QL and sometimes takes stories from here.

By labda06• 21 Aug 2008 07:58
labda06

tallg for arguments sake, isn't the original source QL? Credit is due to asarmaji but by not mentioning QL the assumption is she met the guy physically in the field or in a forum that had nothing to do with QL. Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Primary source is QL. So she IS guilty of some form of plagairism. (yells) Qatari!!!

Question: Why do you think QL was not mentioned?

there...but granting I saw the name Asamarji, I was thinking "was he from QL"? Because the topic was posted here before it published in the news. But I supposed the reporter did his assignment (interviewing this QL member)? And just hope he did not write the article out of context from QL forum.

Oooh, of course, I forgot that their Managing Editor is on QL. I'm guessing it was her who contacted asamarji.

If that's the case then I'm going to watch what I say, cos last time I accused The Peninsula of amature reporting I got a stern rebuke from her!

labda - the reporter did acknowledge the source. In this case the source was asamarji. They got the story directly from a person and credited that person in the article, so there's no case a plagiarism. It doesn't matter who that person has told the story to previously.

It would have been plagiarism if they'd just lifted the story straight from QL, but they didn't.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plagarism

"Plagiarism is not copyright infringement. While both terms may apply to a particular act, they are different transgressions. Copyright infringement is a violation of the rights of a copyright holder, when material protected by copyright is used without consent. On the other hand, plagiarism is concerned with the unearned increment to the plagiarizing author's reputation that is achieved through false claims of authorship." This has nought to do with copyright.

And since Im on a roll here "Since journalism's main currency is public trust, a reporter's failure to honestly acknowledge their sources undercuts a newspaper or television news show's integrity and undermines its credibility...The ease with which electronic text can be reproduced from online sources has lured a number of reporters into acts of plagiarism: Journalists have been caught "copying-and-pasting" articles and text from a number of websites."

Hello? Intellectual property is intellectual property, doesnt matter whether its in a book or written in the sky, if there is no reference the assumption is that it is an original piece. In this case it wasnt an original piece written by the reporter so...plagairism!!!

Ah, you didn't say that they'd go the story from QL. How did they contact you?

It's odd the Peninsula come across as surprised that begging is going on in Doha, cos it's been happening for a few years from what I understand, especially around Ramadan.

Several QL stories have made it into the papers here. Sometimes they credit QL, sometimes they just blindly cut and paste it with no reference.

By asamarji• 20 Aug 2008 16:34
asamarji

the peninsula got my story from QL that means that the newspaper is taking what goes on in Ql seriously and are intrested in what we have to say.

so in discussing a good social point here in qatar we could be making it a front page story on the widely read newspaper and by doing that we will be truley addressing the issue and hopefully someone will move to solve it.

so its all in the greater good of Qatar and us as expats.

so if Ql name was not published am sorry but again i do think everyone who participated and made this happen and hope that Ql become like a real window to the social issues going on in Qatar and hopefully an aid in eventually solving them.
