Qatari Traditinonal Dress

timebandit

What is the traditional dress of a Qatari male called? You know the all in one shirt/dress thing? Only I quite fancy one. I have noticed they are much more belly friendly that trousers and a shirt. They must be nice and cool. And probably come with loads of other benefits (suggestions please).

So have you ever seen a westerner wearing one of these? Did he look stupid and out of place. Did you think what an idiot? Should I forget all about this whim? Do I need a license for one?

a comment from a long established western friend here

"I much prefer a country where the womens' dresses are more see through than the mens"

Seriously though Thobes were developed to suit this climate, strangely enough old photos of Qatar don't show many people wearing the "modern" thobe

In Qatar and Bahrain it's called a Thobe.

In Kuwait it's called DishDashah.

I see a lot of western people wearing thobes, many of my friends do.

Mandilulur I will wear roller skates under my thobe, and glide so gracefully you won't believe your eyes.

Thank you, Aisha, that's very gracious of you! I do love wearing my abaya and I always appreciate the compliments I get. I've been unsure about men wearing the thobe. It's nice to know that Qataris think it's cute. I'm not sure that Western men will ever have that gliding grace that Qatari men have, though.

MODs please delete MD's first comment as it's so untrue, absurd and insulting, even if he's honest that some high-ranking Qatari told him this lie.

MagicalDragon, the thobe is Qatari and so am I..I'm telling you this is untrue..wether it’s a lie or a lame joke It doesn't matter.. It's simply untrue.. It's even stupid; I mean it's not like they're not wearing anything underneath it.. they do.. Maybe you don't know Qataris well, hygiene is in our blood.. This accusation of yours is insulting and made up. How can you advice a man who is about to purchase a thobe with something that would totally humilate him; this is rude too.. Look how clean the thobe is and how Good the people in it smell..

Unbelievable, man!

Plus, we use our right hand to eat because this is the Islamic teaching ALLL OVER THE WORLD.. Not because our left hands are dirty in QATAR! Yuck man this is disgusting..

Timebandit "I think if I saw a westerner in a thobe I would wonder what he was trying to prove" welll, locals don't think that way.. we would think "yay how cute" haha.. We don't mind and we don't get offended at all.

So how did they do it? through the pockets too?! It's ridiculous.

By anonymous• 15 Oct 2009 09:04

QatariLady, the Qatari was a high ranking man, it was not meant as a joke, it was made and tailored especially for that occassion according to the tradition. But I understand that, as usual, what you don't like, you deny.

By QatariLady• 15 Oct 2009 09:02
QatariLady

MD.. I guess the one who gave you the thobe meant it as a lame joke or he was too embarrassed to tell you that the thobe was worn out! It's sooo untrue. Both pockets are made to be used as pockets only. Both are supposed to be closed.

Men don't clean themselves through the pockets!

readymade thobe at souq, try it and if you feel comfortable, go for it then.

I have a Far Eastern colleague here in office, who wear the complete outfit on every Thursday. Look cute and the locals really like it.

Ah ha... there we have it.. _noms_ has said what I think most people will think. I think if I saw a westerner in a thobe I would wonder what he was trying to prove. Of course if it were not uncommon that would be different. But I do fancy one still. Is there a thobe hire shop anywhere around here? I think I should try one on, post the picky on here, and you guys can vote for, or against.

MD, if the Bedouins did not have toilets, how they managed to do it with hands only? With a suction sweeper OK, but how with hands?

By Pikey• 15 Oct 2009 07:28

No actually they are cool to dance in. I think the official word here is that the men in white thobe's don't drink. Also they don't want Qatari's to be seen drinking openly, in order to preserve their image as an Islamic country?

I think they should be dressed in black and white a bit like a pint of Guinness..)

Deny me entry into a club... why are they difficult to dance in?

Aisha, I am not making anything up. The thobe that I got as a present from my Qatari friends in 1991 has an open left pocket. I asked for this and the answer I wrote is the answer I got. The Bedouins did not have toilets. They had to clean themsleves somehow and they did it with the left hand through the thobe and that is why you should not use your left hand for eating! If you say that is not true then you are telling a lie. I still have the thobe and I can prove it.

By otep• 15 Oct 2009 02:59

try for yourself then if it looks good for you then it's okay and if not, don't ever wear again.

Hi timebandit welcome here.. I'm Qatari and I know all about it..it's called Thobe, and yes they are belly friendly.. But still there will be trousers and shirt only very light; beneath the thobe; get them tailored as well ( My advice to you is to go to the tailor with a Qatari man coz they have experience and will know what to get for you; you know the nice materials and all)

It would be nice not to worry all the time about what to wear you know.. You can wear it everyday and no one would mind haha

Many non Qataris, Arab and non Arab wear those.. I think it would be nice if you wear them with a cap and sun glasses :-D That would be considered a style :-)

And you do not need a license for one :-)

MagicDragon,

"and the left pocket is open"

No.That's disqusting and sooo made up!! yuckkk why would you say that it's simply not true..And who said the left hand is considered unclean!! I've never heard of that before!! Maybe you confuse Qatar with some other parts of the world.. You know if you were joking; the guy was looking for serious answers he's new and he doesn't even know the name "thobe" let alone knowing that you meant it as a joke! Qlers!! aaah

I hope I didn't read your comments/information wrong, MD. It seems difficult to do heavy or dirty work on a thobe. Maybe it was made for a 'high class' of people to keep it from stains.

It's a dish dash or a thobe, and the left pocket is open, so that you can clean your a** with the left hand. And that's why the left hand is considered unclean".
