Doha, 6th July 2009

Qatar has created a history of sorts in the recently concluded GCC Open Badminton Tournament at Bahrain by becoming Champion of the Tournament for the year 2009. Players from Qatar has finally been able to leap forward Qatar into the top position in the GCC open badminton tournament amongst the top players from KSA, Kuwait, Bahrain, Dubai & Abu Dhabi. Mr. Arun Vijaykumar from Qatar became champion of the tournament by winning the Men's Single title.

The Qatar success story continued with team of Mr. Pavan Kumar and Mr. K.O. George becoming champion in the above 40 Category doubles event. Apart from winning two events, Manoj Sahibjan from Qatar reached the Semi Final in Men's singles, Pavan Kumar and Arun Vijaykumar in the Men's Doubles, Sairah Jain Roberts in the Ladies Singles, Sarah Jain Roberts and Shehna Girish in the Ladies Doubles and Manoj Sahibjan and Sairah Jian Roberts in the Mixed Doubles events. This is a commendable achievement despite having very limited and scarce Badminton facilities for players in Qatar. It is imperative to make available of international standard facilities for the badminton in Qatar, which could bring in more success stories.

Qatar Badminton Academy, the body which is keen to develop badminton in Qatar, has conducted various trainings to the young talents in the Country (of different nationalities including Qatar nationals), is planning to conduct a Qatar Grand Prix GCC Badminton tournament during Nov. 2009. This tournament includes Qatar open Junior and sub junior championship, Qatar Open championship (seniors) and GCC Open Badminton tournament.

I know a few of them... were national level (or state level.... not a 100% sure) players in India... but its not a mean task... beating the UAE, Saudi etc... and Bahrain had fieldedmtheir national team... great show!

I hope the sports authorities take note...

drsam I disagree with you. I'm sure more than being found they were good thats y they were included in the team. FYI badminton in south India is real big and most of the nationals players are from South India and if this team were to play against an indian team they'd so lose miserably. LMAO at what you just said. Training my foot!

I just hope, this turn of events, will start to create more badminton courts here in Qatar... We can never tell, this might only be the tip of the iceberg. There might be a lot of talented badminton players and rising badminton stars out there, but the prob... playing courts...

they might not be of qatari lineage (in fact who is?), but still, they were "found", trained and raised in qatar. same thing happens for many nations. However, i hope that they don't strip them of their qatari passeport at the airport. they are qatari representing qatar outside qatar, but inside qatar, they're non-qatari.
