Qatar truly become a “magnet for moaners"?

Has Qatar truly become a “magnet for moaners,” Velvet Garvey, blogger puts it? And if so, why?

People really hate it here.

- They hate the weather.
- They hate the driving.
- They hate the rules.
- They hate the lack of rules.
- They hate the locals.
- They hate their jobs.
- They hate the people they meet.

And they’re not afraid to tell you about it.When did it become ok to tell a complete stranger your opinion on every taboo topic under the desert sun? When did it become ok to reveal the worst parts of yourself within the first half hour of meeting someone?

I think Qatar has become a magnet for spoilt children who have grown into adults and believe falsely that their nannies and parents constantly telling them that they are specially really meant something.

I think your command of english language also suffers a great deal. The message is simply not getting through to you. I am not judging you based on your passport, I am pointing to the factor which is "relative" to your previous situation. Coming from India, probability is that your situation got BETTER by being in DOHA so it is GOOD for you........

Others may have a different experience than yourself, because they came from a different previous situation THAN YOURSELF.

GET IT? Probably not........

lol...I havent seen anyone on QL who contradicts himself, draws conclusion, post after post, in every post:

"Coming for (from) India, you haven't experienced and or lived in a community situation, where people ........ are judged based on their character and merit, not based on what their passport is".... you just judged me based on my passport without knowing me...:) But I am loving it and I am not telling anything about me...:)

*sigh*....

I said probably... See its really simple.

If you come to Qatar and your lifestyle improves, even if at the expense of professionalism, common courtesy and politeness in your day to day dealing with people, then you are feeling lucky - good for you.

Alternatively, if your lifestyle remains the same, but other stuff goes sour, then even with extra money over a short period of time you start to feel not so lucky.

You sit in the first camp. Coming for India, you haven't experienced and or lived in a community situation, where people wave thanks at you for giving way on the road, where professional standards are maintained and people are judged based on their character and merit, not based on what their passport is. Plus, your lifestyle also changed perhaps, so you should rightly feel lucky. Therefore try not to judge the ones who are not in the lucky camp.

2) Prim: You fall into the category of those who should feel lucky to be here.

and then "Lol - that must be your expertise, jumping to conclusion" & "However stop judging others as to why they are not happy (not always about money), because you will NEVER understand". Hmmmmm, need I state the obvious...:)

Well, going back to the original post.

I think Qatar is quite a unique place. A lot of different people in one , rather small space. Of course there will be complaints if people of vastly different origin, mentality and culture/habit are crammed together.

Then you have occurrences that are difficult to accept, from a humanitarian point of view, by some . And there are some etc's which I won't go into.

I'd say unless you decide for yourself to completely disregard that which you can't agree with, only then you can be happy here.

Which is the same in almost every place, a bit more so in Qatar maybe.

Lol - that must be your expertise, jumping to conclusion. You just searched on my previous posts and came to conclusion that those are the only factors I considered?

Also, the money situation changed dramatically after negotiations. Plus I never moaned about money on this post either. There are other things at play.

But as I said, you sit in the camp of feeling lucky, depending on where you come from and where you are, so good for you. However stop judging others as to why they are not happy (not always about money), because you will NEVER understand.

Someone who boasts to have studied at Ivy league schools and was working in an elite investment bank at senior management position makes the move for a small difference of something like QAR 50000 pa overlooking that that small extra amount would not bring him happiness and satisfaction says that I must feel lucky to be here ...lol. Don't know who, at the end of the day, must be thanking local godfathers (whatever that means)? Anyways, since I don't criticize myself for my (informed) decisions and dont unnecessarily moan about anything and everything but would rather engage in constructive criticism, I am out of here. Have a fruitful and happy stay here as long as you want...:)

I have spoken already about the topic so I am not going to repeat myself. But suffice it to say not everyone is unhappy in Qatar. There are many people, including myself, who thank God for being in such a thriving place. Complaining is human nature and, believe me, people complain far more in other countries.

Prim: I bet you feel very smart now. Don't you?

Feel good and enjoy your time in Qatar (as long as it lasts, and don't forget to say many thanks to your local godfathers)

londonlad...obviously you didn't do your homework properly before making the move (just like you missed an 's' in my virtual name) and so why you feel unhappy is quite understandable. Look up for 'informed decision making', it will help you not to regret later.

In the summer, it is a challenge because it is so hot, one can not enjoy the outdoors. So hang in there; because by late sept/early October it is beautiful here. But certainly in the summer, a lot of people get the "Doha Blues" You just have to accept it and lay low. Don't feel guilty for staying in and reading, watching movies and general flopping.

We become stronger in ourselves going through a summer in Doha, and how we appreciate the little things! Doha is a quirky, exciting place to be, you just have to get through these summer months!

By Prism• 2 Sep 2012 09:11

Some came for money and some came for challenge/ adventure/change of place/more money/etc...then why this place is to be criticised for being backward or whatever by the later. Or did they come for 'change of place' to see a place which is exactly the same as the place they came from...lol.

However, others who have had it pretty good back home and came here for a challenge/adventure/change of place/more money/etc, have to see how backwards this place is in all respects.

Hey palms. Yes, we know what we are told and are influenced by those around us. I don't normally subscribe to things I see floating around the internet. However, I noticed this in one of 500 e-mails one day and I think that it is probably worth sharing on QL.

There is a picture of a little baby/toddler, and as if this toddler was speaking to its parents or caregivers, the written text states:

"I know nothing of hatred, intolerance, racism, sexism, bigotry, indoctrination, homophobia or prejudice.

I don't yet understand things like love, compassion, integrity, tolerance, human decency and truth.

For the first, most important formative years of my life, all I will know is what you teach me. Choose well."

I think that's worth sharing.

I have some personal advice for who ever reads this comment. This is to warn everybody who wants to rent a car from them, and this is only advice and for the best of sake. Jumbo is unreliable and do no deliver what they agree upon. They are misleading and you will not be satisfied with the service, if there is any at all. My only advice is to NEVER rent from them!!!

Moaning, ranting, complaining, whining...It's just freedom of expression. Just an outlet to release frustrations coz that's all some of us can do. Whether you are here, in your own country or any part of the world, there will always people who will complain about something...unless you live in a perfect world:)

People in general can be real whiners every now and then, for some though the act of doing so is just chronic!

That said many times we tend to moan with the hope of getting some kinda solace, justice, attention, sympathy etc. And should we complain to the right crowd we may actually get what we need. Again it's the random ranting that does more harm than good and makes you seem a real cry baby!

"When did it become ok to reveal the worst parts of yourself within the first half hour of meeting someone"...cannot agree with the statement...looks like more of to create sensationalism. First half hour generally goes in working on topics to know each other and also it is not about the worst part of oneself, literally. On the same note, the last three hate categories don't seem to be otherwise right...atleast I never heard anyone saying they hate locals (neither do I) and jobs (dont know if discomfort related to exit permit system is what is meant) and hating people whom they meet is not possible if the blog is about talking to a person whom I met cos if I hate the person whom am I talking to. Raising concern for betterment cannot be considered hate otherwise.
