Qatar never to host olympics?

From a Post on ILQ.

The Guardian reports that Doha accused the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Wednesday, following its decision to eliminate Doha’s bid from the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, of “closing the door on the Arab world”.

In the IOC’s overall evaluation Doha reportedly tied Chicago for third place and ranked ahead of Rio de Janeiro.

Doha 2016 head Hassan Ali Bin Ali said, “it is a great pity that they (the IOC) have closed the door on a bid from the Middle East. If the Games are only going to be held in Europe, Asia and America then I do not know why the IOC want us in the Olympic movement”.

According to the Guardian Doha outperformed Rio in the majority of the categories assessed by the IOC and when asked if he though the decision has been taken on political or technical grounds, Ali Bin Ali said, “this was not a technical decision”.

The IOC said Wednesday night that Doha’s desire to stage the Games in October rather than the traditional mid-summer time frame because of high temperatures was the reason the city was rejected. Spokeswoman Giselle Davies said, “the IOC…decided not to grant this exception as it conflicts with the international sporting calendar and would be bad for athletes and sports fans. Does this mean Doha or another country from the Middle East could never host the Games? No.”

IOC executive director Gilbert Felli told a news conference Thursday that it was Doha’s suggestion to host the Games between October 15 and 30 to reduce the problem of high temperatures in the desert state and it doomed its bid. He said, “of course Doha was advised that the date of the Games would be July 15-August 31. They asked for an exception and it was not accepted by the executive board”. As for future chances for other Middle East applicants, Felli said, “…. Middle East countries are not exactly all in the same place”.

“…. Middle East countries are not exactly all in the same place”. *sighs*

Maybe Qatar should have just let the IOC decide on the date.

@adey, I'm quoting from The Guardian.. :S

@ataha, Qatar's overall population is 1.4 million.

@eyehawk, yes, let's ask a country to give expats the money instead of trying to develop the country through bringing it in the world's spotlight. Because we all know that ALL countries in the world would do that.

@Red_pope, that is a brilliant suggestion. I'd love to see more greenery in Qatar. The only issue is with watering, we need more on the grass and less on the roads :P

@mmoon, read the article carefully then.

@treysdad, they wont allow that sadly, Aparantly according to FIFA, the Japan/Korea world cup as the most disorganized and they promised never again.

@mufy, YOU need to look at the IOC report. Qatar TIED ith Chicago, and as higher than RIO.

To be honest, I really do hope that Qatar learns from this experience, develops the country nicely anyay and succeeds nextime :)

I'm sure there was far more to Doha's bid being rejected than the fact that they wanted to hold the games in October. There will have been a load of other factors that aren't covered by the technical side of the bid and that the IOC aren't willing to divulge.

Why not the GCC submit a single bid to host the Games? That way games will be held in different venues. Much like how the World Cup was co-hosted by South Korea and Japan.

Or maybe a Doha-Dubai joint bid?

there are bids getting rejected everytime, as there would only be 1 city hosting the olympics. i don't really know why Qatar is relating the rejection w/ "olympics closing its door to the Arab world". as a yet growing city Doha is, i wasn't superised that Doha was rejected at all. there's space to improve. Doha is definetly not the best city to host olympics, at least for now.

The IOC said Wednesday night that Doha’s desire to stage the Games in October rather than the traditional mid-summer time frame because of high temperatures was the reason the city was rejected.

Here is my suggestion to the climate and extreme temperature issues:

1- Why not plant a tree for every barrel of oil that is sold daily?

At least in year 2020, you will have some kind of micro-climate in the works. :)

Everyone lets hug a tree for Qatar from know on.

Unless Qatar is underwater, due to the climate changes world wide. :(

I believe Qatar has the golden opportunity to improve the current public infrastructure. :*

Maybe Doha should focus on more important things...and maybe this is a sign for Doha to spend and share the money to those people working hard in their country than spend hundred millions in this so called Olympics.

i dont think its early.. doha can.. but i guess instead of looking at this as a failure.. they should develop as planned since they have the money.. and show the olympics that they can take the 2020...

All the cities you mentioned have a longer history as cities than Doha has , thus they have held it before.

A city is not buildings or money.

Don't be upset , Doha was never going to be chosen for a myriad of reasons. they have done the country a favour by rejecting it now before they spend millions just to be rejected later.

In many years perhaps - but Doha is just too young.

It has to do with fairness and what the games represent.

Look at London, they've hosted it THREE times now

Look at the US FOUR times already.

Tokyo hosted TWICE.

Alot of fairness and bringing the world together there.
