Qatar Living is no fun anymore

Tigasin321
By Tigasin321

I mean QL used to be a lot of fun with a lot of humor. Sure there were the idiots with their stupid posts but there were also some really good debates, arguments and witty humor.

Recently, the quality of the posts has reached an all time low (without Britexpat and JaneyJaney there would be no humor to speak of).

But now the idiots have taken over entirely. We get adolescent morons posting about Filipinas and body hair. Some other idiot posting about Filipinas and western men. In addition we get all the religious fundamentalists and conspiracy theorists and all the other killjoys that haunt this site.

Come on guys lets have some fun or we might as well forget it.

you have a point... recently i have moved house and changed jobs and been doing a lot of organising of other events...

Why doesn't someone start a pudding club.

You go out once a week and you eat a fabby desert someone...

Wow now that would be a really good club... all the lovely yummy things on sale here!!!

I would just like to say...you can start your own groups...

I have two and both groups have done something in the last month...

For the Latinos groups you need no points and well just be Latino and not freaky.

For some groups you dont even need to post....

ideas for Groups:

Beach Trips

Cars

Desert Walks (when it gets cooler)

Family Group

This claim that the bullying is justified because of some obscure "earlier post"...

It's not true. It isn't. One person, please, refer me to any mythical "earlier post" to justify that point. Post the web page of the thread. It's not true.

People are just beating their chests to say how nasty they can be. That's the fact. Its not about a response to people being out of order, its when they challenge the bullying of older members that they get abuse.

"Sensitive"? - Im as sensitive as the next guy. But when the pack descends its horrible.

VOYAGERESS IS A GENIUS! STOP THE POINTS SYSTEM! KEEP THE QLSG "PRIVATE" GROUP PRIVATE.

Both are causing problems and divisions on the site.

that I've frequented over the years and I've seen worse language and MUCH nastier bullying, but at the moment I am referring to an occasion (when I was new to QL) which prompted me to contact admin.

I am NOT and WAS not spooked - it was an observation pertinent to being new on a forum (any forum) and not yet knowing the personalities.

The only time I've seen it put to ANY use is when used to check that a person is an active member of QL and as such used (amongst other things) to tell whether someone is eligible to apply for membership to any of the Qatar Groups.

Apart from this, I can see no reason for the points at all!

And, as you say, it encourages some to post simply for the sake of earning and gaining points. For what? duh

may well have involved someone 'known to existing members'. However that someone wasn't putting up any resistence and I had my own opinion on whether or not his words had been taken wrongly by the readers. Whatever, the thread read like a pack of wolves were after him, baying for blood.

I just remember being horrified.

Anyway, it was a long time ago and I only mentioned it as an example of how a newbie may see things differently from the old timers.

Oh and I remember, at the time, thinking that some of the people chiming in with the name-calling were simply doing it to fan the flames at his expense. That made me MORE horrified :/

The way I see it you write well and lucidly and you make valid points. But why be so sensitive? You are obviously thoughtful and intelligent and well capable of holding your own in a debate.

I think some people take things too seriously. When you have been on the site for a while and when you have met some of the people you converse with, you don't take things personally. At least I don't. I think the forums should be fun and that no one should take any of this stuff too seriously. Its not that important.

Just call me Tigasin. That's what I'm talking about

A couple of suggestions (from a relative newbie) on how I think QL could be improved:-

1. Abolish the points system! Sadly, it's an incentive for some members to post inane comments (which is particularly off-putting to newbies hoping for sensible answers to bona fide questions!). If you don't know the answer; don't respond!

2. QLSG "private" club members have a separate site to discuss their outings, etc. It is of little interest to QLers outside of the clique and often appears to be a bit of a "gloat-fest".

through that contact link because I didn't like some bullying I saw on here on a particular thread.

I had only been a member for a couple or so weeks at the time, and what I saw being said upset me enough to contact admin. I even made a comment on the thread and was told to 'hush' by some members who, actually, hadn't been on QL for much longer than myself, but were better established by posting more often.

I'm not sure if I was the only one to contact them, but I persevered and the thread was eventually locked down.

"Do not create topics or posts that criticise, bully or insult other Qatar Living members"

Quote from earlier.

Old timers on this site do this all the time, and then say that people are "whining" if they complain about it.

New people dont know who to complain to (i.e. how to get in touch with admin).

yes there have been many nonsense threads going just for the sake of getting points and more points. Ijust sit and read and look what deserves my attention ;)

people here have gotten dead bored sometimes thats why they think of nothing else but what stupid things to post. Nonetheless, QL is still a good place to go to to gather info and stuffs about qatar and to have friends in qatar. Hail QL!

it aims to show the camaraderie and unity of the group which is under the wings of Qatarliving.com which is an achievement, so to speak.

What turned out bad out of this was the influx of those who wanted to join the group for the SOLE PURPOSE of joining the trips...nothing else.

Being rejected, they (will not mention names) want to form a new group (fine, go ahead...) but the intent was not to complement the existing group but as to challenge. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I guess you have read the topic threads I am referring to.

As explained by TIG (in his post above), the SG was open to all but we have encountered some weirdoes (I am among those who have experienced it)thus the screeening of the would be members which Darude painstakingly do for everyone's welfare in mind.

This would also serve a lesson to those concerned that we might as well post similar topics inside the QLSG group forum to avoid similar outcome. (IMHO)

Its imminent that the Ql moderators reach a conclusion. There must be well agreed rules about what to post and what not to. And they must be displayed. If you argue that it is impossible then it won't do any one any good. Coz another day another newbie will start doing the same things from square one.In the Guide to Qatar I suggest we place a Guide of for Newbies' to QL. Also all the newbie post should not be allowed to be posted immediately . They must be queued and checked by a mod or some senior member before being displayed to public.

New People will continue to do the same thing again and again unless and until they are guided properly.

Mild Moral policing would help to prevent bigger catastrophes from occurring.

This thread wasn't about the QLSG, it was to do with the quality of the postings. Seems more than the usual number of 'nonsense' threads being put up, just for the sake of it.

Darude I certainly have to commend the work you do for the group you run. You should take a lot of pride in what you have successfully accomplished. But, it seems that there are an awful lot of people who still want to join or are feeling left out.

Maybe you can start a forum topic and see what all of these people want and help guide them on how to join your group. Or maybe get a co-captain to help you expand the group.

Am I speaking gibberish? probably. I don't really know the dynamics of QLSG, I have never wanted to join due to schedule constraints. But, from what I am reading..often..people all over Doha are interested in what you have put together.

So, just a suggestion to maybe start a feedback thread on QLSG.

serious debates with out any abuse swearing or insulting getting personal. even i got at verge of quitting the site so many times but couldnt so i would just stop posting for a while and then get back in to carry on with the rhythm.

many users came tried to get over smart in the beginning but when they found things arent working as they thought they left NOT THAT THEY WERE SIDELINED. its open forum there are no restriction on any one that at certain stage you leave. its upto ppl can they cope with it can they handle the heat. its not only the QL forum where you see such things happening its every where on alot of forums.

alot members came some who are interested only in ad sections only just sit back and watch the daily discussion when they find something interesting they will add their 2cents if.So its just a normal thing nothing new there were days when the traffic on main forum was low and then times that i would get lost tracing my comments coz of heavy traffic on main forum.

Actually, I really enjoy the photo shoot winners, I love art, and even if you aren't "artzy" I must say you can still appreciate what these guys do.

I enjoy reading Novita's experiences at the social outings or when she attended the Thai festival on behalf of QL. They were very well written and are a simple pleasure.

I was interested in the discussion about the bombings in Islamabad..no I am not totally into politics, but I had once visited the country and was interested in what people had to say about the current situation.

The amount of information I get off this site -- priceless! For a place like Qatar which is still developing and may not have all of the advanced tools of marketing--I get loads of information off this site..it's awesome.

I have to say I have like 70 points, generally the only content I post is trying to sell a diamond ring (which is a good deal btw ;) but I enjoy reading a lot of what's on here.

So all that junk you listed...no, never even looked at those threads, but whoever is interested in those topics will read/contribute to them. As for everyone else move on and write about something that interests you.

I agree with everyone who says this is an open forum and if people post then they should be prepared for the response. My comment was in answer to Tigs original post. It was an attempt to explain why there are sometimes lulls in decent posts - because new people aren't being allowed to come through.

And fatcat, there are always going to be exceptions to the rule. Well done you.

I agree with Tallg. Those who have something substantial to say keep away from the serious discussions. No intelligent/respected person in his/her right frame of mind would prefer to invite insulting remarks from a 'few' frustated people.

Wolfie, I only made those friends AFTER joining QL ;)

I never got any favors from anyone... True, my first QL trip was through an invite. But I didn't join QLSG right after that. I only joined AFTER I started posting. In fact, I think I got an invite almost exactly after 200 points. Just like the rules state :)

The QL social gatherings usually work very well and everyone has a good time. Anyone who has been to one, knows that there is a huge mix of nationalities and backgrounds and that it doesn't matter at all.

There have been occasions when people have been excluded but even then after being given several chances ( I am thinking of Mir83 for one) but this is rare and only happens when they act in anti social or obnoxious way.

The only reason people have to serve a little time and accumulate some points before being allowed into the social groups is for safety reasons.

The social element of QL works real well and provides many people with a great social life as a result.

Just call me Tigasin. That's what I'm talking about

I've been saying this for months - one word of the "clique" though and it's all denied - whatever, I have bigger issues to be concerned with like helping the victims stuck in detention centers so i don't know why I even bothered.

One thing I never got - they discuss how wonderful and great "their" gatherings were on QL, after an exciting evening or day out together and they wonder why so many lonesome soles in Qatar (no matter their intentions) want to get in involved.

Heres a tip on how to make lonely people feel even worse - discuss social events on a forum and then "deny" them entry - rules and regulations - sadly thats what this world is all about!!

There is Pm after all so all these "wannabes" don't have to hear!!

By anonymous• 21 Sep 2008 19:25

A site like QL is bound to have people coming and going all the time, especially as it mainly caters for the expat community. When regulars leave they're missed initially, but sooner or later new regulars are created and life goes on.

But one of the big problems is it's very hard to become accepted on QL. The "we're better than everyone else" attitude of existing regulars makes it hard for a newbie to get settled and make a name for themselves. One little mistake and you're pounced upon and derided and often outright insulted. For some reason the regulars seem to be able to get away with this sort of behaviour, while newbies don't.

I guess I'm trying to say that QL is not always the most welcoming of places, and because of this a lot of potentially intelligent, funny posters are put off at the start and don't come back to the site.

What do you expect when you have the “watch dogs” on patrol dictating what is and isn’t appropriated to post. (Oh and I don’t mean the moderators)

We have the extremists who “threaten” people that they will be deported if they even question Islam (before you extremists even suggest I’m Islamophobic I probably have more muslim friends than you)

Oh lets not forget shutting down the forum!!!

Me loves how threatening individuals is accepted but “cursing” is not allowed as “threatening” is so much more acceptable on any forum!!!

We than have the “watch dogs” who attack people - anyone that dares says a nasty comment about Qatar….and you wonder why so many people have left QL? Seriously, there have been dozens of people who have left as any time they post anything negative they get this “I will deport you”, “you hate Qataris so leave” blah blah…it gets to the point where people don’t bother anymore.

The "WEST SUXS" and "QATAR is the best country in the world" happy extremists?? – maybe if we all chant this then some of these “watch dogs” will disappear and let people discuss their concerns in peace…

Before you “watch dogs” attack ME, I seriously don’t care - I don’t live in the country so am no risk of being deported.....happy chatting :):)
