Qatar's Al Khaliji Commercial Bank on Wednesday said it is in talks to merge with International Bank of Qatar, but that the discussions were still at an early stage.

Al Khaliji, Qatar's sixth-largest bank by market value, is "in discussions with another financial institution regarding the evaluation of the possibility of a combination of the businesses of both parties, and revealed that this financial institution is International Bank of Qatar," according to a statement posted on the bourse website.

The bank said the "the discussions are very preliminary and exploratory, and that no decisions have been made," but didn't disclose any further details.

I thought they were part owned and managed by National Bank of Kuwait for sometime now? I remember asking about whether they had any international branches when I first opened an account there and this was clearly explained....I just checked their website too and it says the same thing www.ibq.com.qa/About/Default_en_gb.aspx

Just FYI....

Earlier IBQ was 'Grindlays Qatar Bank" till 2000, merged with Standard Chartered Bank and then Qatar Govt bought all shares from SCB and then became a 100% local entity named IBQ :)

I know with IBQ they have an Islamic branch called Al Yusr. Barwa is only Islamic. I don't know much about them.

Barwa is Islamic Bank. No Khaliji, may be they have license but right now their primary is not Islamic

IBQ has an Islamic license not sure about Al Khaliji.... I agree with FU - IBQ is the better bank. I have my accounts with them and they have been super - none of the problems you hear about with the others. Very professional - I was surprised.

Anyways both banks are Govt owned.....synergies and redundancies do work positively in long run...good luck to all :)

of the employees though. The management and operations of the new entity will go to IBQ in all probability given their experience and expertise in the region. Al Khaliji is in operations for just couple of years. I see a threat to the jobs at midmanagement and operations level at Al Khaliji.

IBQ is a decent bank... me thinks... or maybe bcos I have friends there who make it easier... but they've really stepped up a few notches with their 5% cash back on credit cards and their online banking... hope they maintain their standard
