Prisoner must be adressed as 'Mr'

Everyone deserves respect, but isn't this taking things a bit far ???

A notorious gangster has won the right to force prison officers to call him ‘Mr’.

Colin Gunn, who is serving a 35-year sentence for ordering the killing of two grandparents, made an official complaint that he was not being treated with sufficient respect.

The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman upheld his claim and officers have now been told to address him as he wishes, it was revealed last night.

It is understood that Gunn, who remains the leader of one of the country’s most feared and violent gangs behind bars, felt that ‘Mr Gunn’ was more in keeping with his status.

From his cell, he issued a statement saying the decision was a victory over ‘rude, ignorant prison staff’.

The decision was condemned by prison staff. Colin Moses, national chairman of the POA, the union for prison officers, said: ‘It is political correctness gone mad. You have to earn respect, not demand it.

‘The inmates certainly don’t treat the prison officers with respect. Everything is geared to the prisoner.

‘We agree that people have to be treated with decency, but what is decency? Where is the decency to the staff? We have the highest rates of assaults on staff ever, yet we spend time, energy and money on cases such as Gunn’s.’

oh dear, a criminal asking for "sufficient" respect and the court granted him. whatever is happening to this world? if you kill someone, you are a criminal. if you are disrespected by being called names (or the lack of it),live with it. you deserve it. a person who kills helpless grannies don't deserve anyone's sympathy in my book.

can never be levelled at some low life who has comitted a hideous crime. Once you rape, murder or do intentional harm you cannot claim Human Rights at all. You did not act as a Human so therefore you do not have their rights.

at Belmarsh, where he is currently being held. They won't take to kindly to be ordered to call him mister.

But they will do it such a way as to piss him off.

For example:

"Well Mr Gunn, I'm off home to see the Mrs and the kids.....yourself?"

Brit....I was a prison nurse for 4.5 years in one of the highest security prisons in UK, and we had to refer to the inmates as 'Mr'. However, they could call us whatever they wanted to,because they had 'human rights'.you would not believe some of the things I have been called in the course of my duty.

Just when one thinks the Brits couldn't possibly outdo themselves in their silly quest for political correctness, they outdo themselves yet again!...one can only laugh @ this,no other reaction is worth it! :)...

@ rishimba, the Indian scenario is a completely different issue mate, the courts do not order the jailors & prison guards to address their prisoners "mr" or "mrs",whatever respect they show is out of fear or because they are on that prisoner's payroll or both...

brit, if this verdict is the first of its kind, many other inmates would like to be addressed themselves as mr., mrs., dr. or even sir in case they have received knighthood..

Well, and why not? A bit of decorum and manners has not yet hurt anybody. Plus, you do not have to sink to the same level as others, non?

although, I have to admit, being a prison guard can't be fun....

in india, the local goons or corrupt politicians serving jail sentences stay like kings there..

they are addressed as 'sir' by the staff and also get secret unofficial paroles whenever they want. the jail staff dread these inmates because of their clout in the locality..
