Pregnant OFW gang raped in Saudi

MANILA, Philippines – A pregnant 34-year-old overseas Filipino worker (OFW) in Dammam, Saudi Arabia was allegedly raped by 3 Arab men inside the service bus of the university where she worked.

Salley (not her real name) who works as a school cleaner, was 9 months pregnant when she was raped.

Salley said that on the day she was raped, she had just come from a maternity clinic for a check-up.

While walking on the way back to her office, a service bus stopped and offered her a ride.

Because the service bus was from the university where she worked, Salley decided to take the driver up on his offer.

But it turned out that the driver and his companion were planning to rape her.

“Hindi ko na alam kung ano ang gagawin ko kasi akala ko isa lang siya,” Salley said. “Sa likod ang isa pala nagtatago.” (I don't know what to do because I thought he is alone but too late for me to realized that one of them is hiding in the rear end of the bus)

“Habang umaandar yung bus, dinala ako nung mas bata doon sa likod tapos hanggang sa ginalaw na nga ako nung bata na iyon,” Salley adds. (While the bus was running, I was brought by the younger one at the back of the bus and there they raped me and did the worst to me).

According to Salley, the men picked up another Arab on the way. She added that the Arabs were around 19 to 22 years old.

Salley said that the bus was taking a long route until it stopped in a vacant lot. Because the bus’ windows were tinted, no one could see what was happening inside the vehicle.

“Doon mas grabe ang ginawa sa akin,” Salley said. “Nagmamakaawa na ako. Akala ko papatayin na ako.” (They did nasty things to me. I even asked for kindness and compassion. I thought they will kill me.)

After she was raped, Salley was dropped behind a mall and robbed of her money and cell phone.

Aiza Monares was among the first to come to Salley's rescue. Monares immediately brought Salley to the police station in Dammam.

“Hindi siya nakapagsalita ng maayos. Parang wala siyang lakas. Ang mukha niya, makikita mong takot na takot siya,” Monares said. (She can't speak well. She looks very weak. You can see the fear in her face.)

Salley has only been working in Dammam for 1 year. Her husband, who works as a waiter in Ha-il, was furious when informed of his wife’s plight.

“Hindi ako makatulog... kasi naalala ko po ang mga nangyari sa akin,” Salley said. (I can't sleep everytime I remember what happened to me)

“Gusto ko sana bigyan sila ng leksiyon para hindi na tularan. Alam ko naman ang patakaran sa Saudi, basta ni-rape, gusto nila pugutan ng ulo,” she added. (I want to teach them a lesson. But I know the rules in Saudi that once you were raped, they will cut your head)

The Philippine Embassy has already taken steps to ensure that Salley is given justice. With a report from Dinan Arana, ABS-CBN News Middle East

The first people to make this into a bashing thread/East-West issues were you and your various other usernames and your pals, Sillyguy.Only people THAT stupid could take the rape of some poor girl and pretend that anyone condemning it is attacking Islam.  Are you seriously wanting to lay claim to such vile men as your brethren?  Wouldn't disowning them and pointing own how they have violated the laws of Islam and how Islam is a great religion because it condemns such actions be wiser approach? In fact, the most insensitive attack on religion came via sikandar and his remark about the Pope molesting little boys at 2:44pm.  Am I to take it that you support such statements?

If the rape has happened its very sad and victim should get justice. The rapist should be subjected to strict sharia-law that is unlimited lashing in public and if possible chopping off their $%#^$. There are 80 comments before me. In the comments hyper-active-western-brigade have said that they are living in the region so they are concerned. I just wonder.....is the hate and dislike for arabs and muslims that attracts more western-brigade comments on any negative news related to muslims and islam or is it a care for muslims and islam? In another thread she had said that they comment because they care for muslims and islam. If they comment due to hate and dislike then I have no problem but if their comments are due to care for muslims and islam. Then I wonder why there is not a single comments from hyper-active-western-brigade on this thread http://www.qatarliving.com/node/1952232 .

You are but extremely mistaken. What I meant was the fact that, since this act of brutality had taken place in a country which is not only Muslim but also symbolically more important than other muslim countries. Of course, rape is not allowed by any religion or culture.

But I should respect their Law(rolling eyeballs). One thing that can be thrown against the victim is the "Segregation Law" - forbids unrelated men & women associating with each other. The judicial body can throw the question why she accepted the offer for a ride(the school bus indeed from the school but it is not her official service bus)...Execution by beheading may seem not be the  punishment for the victim. Imprisonment & lashes is possible.  Those fcukin' abusers and fcukin' imbeciles,illiterate,stupid-morons may be in a serious situation if proven guilty. This is so unfare to the victims, it happens to all nationalites under this Medieval type of Law. One victim would say, " I was raped but I can't seek justice because justice will also rape me" ...tsk ..tsk .. fcuk!

I think this should not be taken as an east west bashing exchange session. The OP is concerned about her fellow citizen and has posted it here since this happened in this very region. She, along with many finds this region as being the safest in the world however such sporadic incidents do happen here as well and when it happens it makes headlines and makes people sit up and take notice the world over. That is simply because such occurrences are not a norm but exception. My sympathies goes with the victim however I have really started to wonder why whenever such incidents make news it involves a certain nationality only.

(:"You mean like the women and children who are smuggled into the Middle East?  Remember Doha Ghetto, the Gulf countries are Tier 3 human trafficking countries, which mean they are some of the WORST in the world for sex slavery, far far worse than Tier 1 European countries.  If 200,000 kids are being trafficked in Europe, the other 1 million are being trafficked here.

Doha-Getto

nothing to do with my maid.

The crucial difference is that yes, tragically these things do go on in Europe but we know that it is legally and morally wrong and those caught will almost certainly be prosecuted. The difference here is there is no fear of prosecution, therefore fuelling a despicable situation and the victim is more likely to suffer adverse consquences if she decides to report it.

SHOCKING new statistics reveal nearly half of young men still think sex with women too drunk to know what is going on is not rape, Sky News reports.

And 46 percent of men aged 18 to 25 also do not consider it rape if the woman changes her mind during sex.

The survey comes as a new video to raise awareness about rape was posted on YouTube by a group of specialist support centers called The Havens.

"It's not consensual sex unless both parties agree," explained former Miss Great Britain finalist and rape victim Victoria Buglioni.

In May last year, Ms Buglioni's life changed suddenly after she was followed into the restrooms at a London nightclub.

"The man grabbed me by the hair and smashed my head against the toilet cubical wall," said the 25-year-old.

"I fought back as best as I could but I was knocked out for 27 minutes during which he continued to rape me and get what he wanted from me."

the problem in KSA comes about because:

Societies view of women and women's place in society

Lack of reporting of these types of cases - everything is behind closed doors.

According to one wesbite I found, it's the United States. The United States has the world's highest rape rate of the countries that publish such statistics. It's 4 times higher than Germany, 13 times higher than England, and 20 times higher than Japan. 1 in 7 women will be raped by her husband. And according to Wikipedia Rape Statistics ,Sweden has the highest incidence of reported rapes in Europe and   in Great Britian According to a news report on BBC One presented in 12 November 2007, there were 85,000 women raped in the UK in the previous year, equating to about 230 cases every day. According to that report one of every 200 women in the UK was raped in 2006. The report also showed that only 800 persons were convicted in rape crimes that same year. I agree with AD--this can happen anywhere.  But that does not mean we should ignore it when it is happening so close to our current home, which shares an common system of domestic work employment. My concern is that the current sponsorship laws in KSA enable it to such a great degree, because it places a great many women in a very vulnerable position.  And because the legal system in KSA is so lenient on citizens and so harsh on foreign workers.  Sponsor kills maid--must be a suicide.  Maid kills sponsor--off with her head (quite literally). All such stories underline my believe that the sponsorship system is more bad than good.  I am glad that Indonesia had stood up to KSA and wish other countries would do likewise until it changes its laws.
